  1. Bears are definately around Youngs Point. I've seen one at the locks at Burleigh. I live east of Lakefield for 5 years and saw bears every summer. Some with cubs. One ate a bar of English Lether soap we had outside. So it is entirely possible they are in your area. That said, I'm sure I've seen spring deer scat like that. They are on grass right now and don't form the pellets well. Kinda mushy. Cut it open. If you find hair it is likely a bear.
  2. Good beginner setup. You might consider a 6wt if fishing SMB. Go for a nine footer too. Four sections is best. 5 year warranty on that rod. If you can afford more get a better rod with the Superstar Service (Imperial or Avid) do so. Check it out on their webs site. Like their Trade-up program.
  3. Anybody. What kind of reel is the silver thing? The dude with the blue hoody. Nice looking machine.
  4. If $ wasn't an issue and polictics aside I'd park myself in BC. BUT - I'd vacation in Alberta, Yukon, Alaska, Northern Ontario, and Quebec with occassional trips into the tropics, arctic and north western US. I'd like to visit Mongolia before I hit the dirt too. Dream on.
  5. Graham – Thanks for the tip. I’ll look into that soon. MJL – No doubt the Meiser’s are top shelf but maybe in a few years. As for line systems: there is a St.Croix rep currently working on that. Being a switch rod I plan to use it for all sorts of situations, spey (Skagit), nymph and dryfly fishing. I’ve been fly fishing for 20 years but never spey. I’ve been patiently intrigued ever since I witnessed a buddy of mine hook-up on a steelhead in one of our great northern rivers. A classic moment. Looking forward to the pull. Also, I’m older now and flogging a 9wt for a couple of days does me in. Fshrgy – Sorry about your luck. I’ve been pretty satisfied with their service (3 rods broke). They seem to be on par with most. I like their upgrade policy too. Maybe I'll upgrade when they bring out a Legend Ultra switch. Do you tape your ferrules? This seems to be common practice among spey fisherman. Thanks for all your replies. I get the feeling that switch rods are going to become popular.
  6. Hi all, I'm looking for an inexpensive switch rod with a good warranty. St.Croix has always been good to me. I was thinking of taking a Imperial 7 or 8wt for a spin, but where can I find one? Any help would be great. Thanks
  7. The ling are likely grouped together because they are winter spawners. This might explain the high numbers. In Alberta the water can turn white this time of year in some locations from all the ... you know.
  8. That is a nice story Billy Bob. Unfortunately I live 3-4 hrs from any border. Here's a link to help determine costs http://www.thefinalcost.com. UPS is a nono. USPS ok. Having a friend in the states you see regularly - priceless. Went to another store today and they quoted me a much better price. I think Maui Jims are in my future. This company seems to have a good relationship with Canada which means fast service and selection, but we do pay $$ Cheers
  9. Quick search on the net http://notjustfishing.com/Lowrance/lowrancex67.shtml $280 CAN I have one paid more than this!
  10. Here is a rant. So I went shopping for sunglass today. I need prescription and would like polarization. I have fitovers, they’re ok for driving. One store quoted me $780 for MJims! These must be the porche of glasses but I drive a Ford. I can go online to Smiths and order a prescription polarized, glass no less, for $279. I’ve had non prescription Smiths before and like them a lot. I called Smith costumer service to ask where I could try on a few models on for size and she informed me that prescription glasses are not available to Canadians! I think part of the problem is that many people get glasses covered through work thus companies can ask for high prices. With such extravagant benefit packages is it any wonder companies go under in NA. Thanks for the search function on the site b/c I reviewed a bunch of older posts on sun glasses. Over the last few years I’ve noticed what little selection we have available in Canada compared to the states. If items are available to us they seem much more expensive. I was once quoted $325 CAN for Fischer backcountry ski boots which I found at Sierratradingpost for $109US. At that savings I shipped them to a friend in NY. I once tried to buy a nice pair of snow boots for my wife but the selection was little in Canada. Look online in the states and there’s 4-5 webpages of boots at great prices. This type of thing happens all the time. Really ticks me off – particularly do the fact we live right next door to the US. Were not Cuba! I recently got dinged for a jacket from Patagonia coming from the states. Once I bought a depth reader for a friend as a thank you gift. I liked it so much I bought one the next week for myself. I was dinged $80 more on the second order. How inconsistent is that! Shipping charges is the new tax. Items costing 4 bucks in the states and the company wants $20 in shipping and ... handling. Well, I’m still not sure what to do about the glasses. $780 isn’t happening even if I had the money, it’s the principle of it. Contacts bother my eyes after a few hours and they never seem to sit right. Btw do you think paying high place for glasses is worth it? I mean, my vision isn’t the best. I’m really the limiting factor no matter how good the glasses are. My windshield is pitted, scratched, and rarely clean – glasses aren’t helping me there either. Same goes for expensive stereo gear. If my hearing is poor or my living room is not that great for sound then what does an expensive stereo mean. Whooo ... ventin' done. Go Canada
  11. I've been to Jacko. Do you need a licence? Best of luck.
  12. Wilco, M Ward, Monsters of Folk, Jayhawks, Sadies, Neko Case, Cash, E Brood, Heavy Trash, White Stripes you get the idea. Bruce Springfield's Nerbraska for driving at night. Throw in a lot of podcasts from CBC Radio 3.
  13. Check out http://www.flyanglers.org/features/doc/46-...73-kitchen.html for tips and laughs. The economics of the kitchen pass.
  14. I emailed the fella in Guelph - no reply yet and like you mentioned I'm not sure if it's thermal. The Redrock Store is a definate maybe. Check out http://www.thefinalcost.com/ is you need to know about shipping to Canada. The guy at Redrock mentioned that website. Also comparing the Base Camp to the Summit model. Tight lines and thanks for the leads.
  15. Good Day All! Anyone know where I can find a Clam Base Camp Thermal? Cabelas wants to charge me a crazy $180 in shipping etc. (before the exchange) - the items is only $280. Yikes! I've check everywhere via the net (Cabelas Canada, Bass Pro, etc). I'm in the Kawarthas so driving across the border is not going to happen. Any advice would be great. Thanks http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/template...&hasJS=true
  16. Went fishing Fathers Day off Port Hope 6-11 am dipsys and wire 30-50 down over 60-175 fow water. Wind northeast at 10k. Saw some schools of bait fish and a few other boats wandering around. Anyone getting fish at this end of the lake? Advice? I will try again in a week or two. Cheers, SB
  17. Don't know if there is any truth in this, but I have heard that we humans have facilitated the return of cormorants. One theory is that we have fished-out many of the large predators in lakes across NA. Numbers aren't what they once were. Predators eat the smaller bait fish so in their absence the baitfish numbers went up. Cormorants will eat small game fish (e.g., 30 cm pike) but rely more on smaller prey. Oddly enough, I have notice a lot more perch in Nip over the last 5-6 years. It's all we catch ice fishing! I real pain. Does anyone have an idea when cormorants became numerous? What other factors could explain low numbers of walleye. I didn't read the EC report. Perhaps I will. I love Nipissing and don't care for the bird. Pelicans are next. Cheers.
  18. Went fishing yesterday with a friend 7-1pm. Great weather. Fished 2 dipsys and 2 steel line setups 10-50 over 10-100 fow without a sniff. Flatlined the shallows. Water 45-47 degrees F. Still too early? I plan on fishing Lake O frequently this summer. Any advice on timing and approach would be great. Hopefully my reports will become more entertaining in the future.
  19. Thanks guys. I've posted this on the spoonpuller site. Slowpoke, I'll try sending a PM.
  20. Anyone know where I can find S-17 Salty rod holders and a 12-17” mounting plate? Prefer a Canadian location. For those that troll Lake Ontario, have you ever tried single strand steel wire? I use it for inland lakers and Gbay salmon, like the sensitivity and have not needed a twill. Have you ever tried putting a Dipsy off single strand steel wire? I’m having decision issues around fleas and choosing the right line (e.g., flea flicker, braid, wire (single and multi-strand). I was thinking of riggers but will see how this year goes on the lake. Is there a spiny flea season? Maybe I can just avoid them. Thanks for any help. LK ON newbee
  21. Hello, I thought I would finally chime in here for this is an important subject. There seems to be some misconceptions and there is new science shedding light on this matter. Big fish tend to have better egg quality than small fish. Better meaning better chances of contributing to the population. Population growth of crashed populations is different than that of healthy populations and the thinking now is that the large females are not present in the crashed populations. This might mean resilient populations have big fish. Not only do they have more eggs but higher quality eggs too. As said earlier fish are not mammals. Many have shown how harvest restrictions can inadvertently cause fish to become smaller and mature earlier. This is happening in some large game pops too. Non-natural selection. Fisheries-induced evolution. This is a really hot area or fisheries research right now. Much is yet to be learned. Check out or google fish maternal effects egg. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/...81130210013.htm Kind of makes you think that all the big fish should go back and keep the smaller ones. Great community here! Ciao
