You are the Mike of Mike and Doreen aren't you? Today started off cold but by 10:30 or so the winds were light, the sun was bright, and so were our spirits. What a beautiful day to be out on the ice! We had lots of company stop by to visit with us, a couple out on their ATVs, Mike and Doreen, new to the area, (told them about OFC, hope to see them on here soon) Others walking, one fellow drove out in his car and set up shop not too far from us (there is plenty of ice, at least 16"). Sue and Mandy walked out for a visit and Mandy had a ball just running all over the place and following every track and trail she could find.

I'll be there, don't know if I'll do any fishing but I wouldn't miss it!

LOL I had forgotten about the snow squal Saturday morning. I had headed off across the lake with the ATV and sled loaded with gear and the guys were driving around the lake to meet me. It was snowing so hard you couldn't see more than about 100' and I got turned around and ended up back at my shore line. Second attempt went better and I at least managed to end up where I wanted but it just shows you how quickly a person could get into trouble. Even though I would have bet money that I was going in a straight line I actually made a full circle. If I hadn't recognized where I was when I came back to shore I could have easily ended up in an area compleatly different than I wanted to be!

Wonderful report, excellent pictures and congratulations all in one post! It doesn't get much better than that!

Well, it all started with Pikeslayer coming up last Wed.. We always enjoy his company but he really came to visit his son Sean who is staying here while he attends school. Steve (Troy's dad) and his son Troy (pikeslayer's son-in-law) came up Friday evening and thus the weekend started. Saturday morning, we had a nice breakfast then headed out fishing for the day. It took us a little while to dial in the perch but the weather was good the company was fantastic, and in the end we managed to bring home a very respectible feed of Sturgeon Lake perch. I couldn't believe how well the young fellows treated me, they took care of everything, set up the hut, drilled holes, I almost had to fight with them to let me drill a few and we has Simon's gas auger LOL. I fixed them though, I ended up winning the pot for the most fish caught, (I also won the pot for the smallest LOL). Then home for a wonderful dinner prepaired by Steve (man can he ever cook). Sunday was much the same, a wonderful breakfast to get us all fired up and ready for the day. We decided to try a different location because we were hoping to find some crappie action, unfortunatly that didn't happen. The wind was a lot colder on Sunday but the boys had the hut all set up in a few minutes and started drilling holes. The fishing wasn't as productive, I kind of think the cold front coming in might have had something to do with it but the company was every bit as good. Once you got out of the wind it was fine. We ended the day with sun and wind burns, tired, but smiles from ear to ear. Alas all good things must come to an end and Simon had to head back to the big smoke LOL. Anyway, a wonderful weekend, plenty of good food, company, and some fish to boot. It doesn't get much better than that!

I think you are on the right track with two smaller machines to start with. How many hours are too much? That really depends on how the machine was used and maintained. I have seen a lot of machines that had the daylights beat out of them at 2000 hours but I have also seen machines that had a lot more hours on them that were in mint condition. The one thing I will suggest is that you get machines that have 4 wheel drive and a winch is always a handy thing. Your best bet is if you are at all uncertin is to take a machine to a dealer and have it checked over. They can tell pretty quick if there is any serious issues likely to pop up. Might cost you a hundred bucks to find out a machine is toast but it's better than spending a few thousand and finding out it is toast. True you will have two machines to insure, store, and maintain but you'll have a LOT more fun and so will your wife. The Kawartha ATV club has lots of lady riders so your wife will fit right in if she decides to join and I haven't met one member in that club that wouldn't take the time to help out a new member. They will even help you learn how to service and repair your machine. Have you called them yet? They might even be able to help you in finding a couple of machines. Let me know if you need any help or if you would like me to introduce you.

I am also with State Farm. 2006 Polaris 450, $182.00 a year full coverage. If I were you, I would go with the two smaller machines, It will give you a lot more freedom and a lot more fun. As far as power goes, I had a Polaris 300 before this and it had plenty of power for pulling logs and stuff out of the bush and the smaller size made it easier to handle in the bush.

My HDS 5 will give me about 24 hours on a fully charged battery

One of the nicest things about this board is that we all do the best we can. Money is tight for many right now and for many putting food on the table or paying the mortgage is the necissity. I know we've had to cut back a little this year. There are several things up for auction that I would love to bid on but just can't afford to this year and I am sure that many others are in the same boat. Don't panic guys, there is still time and whatever we manage to raise will be appreciated as the best we could do!

Heck, there goes the diet for this month! Boy that looks good! -
No, I'm glad you did correct me and you did it very professionally! I'd hate to give anyone bad information too, in the future I'll read what I've typed before I hit that send button LOL. Hope to meet up with you one day and buy you a cold one (or hot one as the case may be).

What a wonderful tribute to such a wonderful man! Just remember his legacy will live on forever in you and all the wonderful qualities he instilled in you through the things he taught you by example. His spirit will live on forever in your heart and in the hearts of so many. Just remember he will always be with you!

Thanks for the replies, most appreciated! I think that I am going to have to sit down with her and spend some time trying to evaluate exactly what she does have and then see where we can get the best value for her. She is a little too much like me and tends to trust everyone to be honest and fair. She is a nice lady and I'd hate to see her get ripped off.

It is that doccumentation that is the big issue, the difference between VF and G is hard to prove unless it is rated by someone that is a recognized appraiser and the difference in value can be huge.
-
LOL, join the club! I think her biggest concern is that some of these stamps are potentially worth over $1000.00 each and she is conserned that if they were to "go missing" during an apprasil she would have little or no way to prove the actual condition or even existance of them. I took a coin collection in to a place to see what it was worth, the guy offered me just about face value for it, told me there was nothing in it that was really worth anything. I ended up talking to someone else about it and found out that several of the pieces in the collection were each actually worth a lot more money than the total face value of the collection. The first guy had tried to rip me off big time. Same thing happened to me selling some old gold jewlery. Guy checked it all out doing an "acid test" kept telling me pieces were 10 or 12 k when they were stamped 18 or 24k then offered me about $750.00 for the lot. I ended up going to a couple of other places and got nearly three times the original offer. Man you have to be so careful these days!

Thanks Dann but what he was refering to was the lubrication process of a two stroke and he is totally right! I was talking with a friend on the phone when I typed my response and should have read what I had typed before I hit the submit button LOL.

Sorry total brain fart on my part, of course you are right! Don't know what I was thinking when I made that comment!

I have a friend who has a stamp collection with stamp books daiting back to 1898 (no idea how old the oldest stamp is) This has been handed down through her family and she would like to get it apraised and might consider selling it. She was asking me how or where she should go to get it done fairly and not have to worry about a few stamps not being returned or her being taken advantage of. I have never had to deal with something like this so I figured I would see if anyone on here could offer any advice.

Well, you are in a good area for ATVing then. Here is a link to the Kawartha ATV club KATV They have a good trail system and from their trails you can hook up with Haliburtons's trail system and way beyond. I am actually thinking of trying to do a trip from Bobcayegon to North Bay this summer by ATV. Get involved with the club, they are good people and love to help new members.

Where is your cottage? Contact a local ATV club, (if you need help finding one, let me know) go to a couple of their meetings, talk to some of the members, they will be able to help you a lot in deciding which machine to get. They can fill you in on trail conditions, what is or isn't allowed, and the clubs often have organized rides which are a super way to get introduced to area trails and ATVing. I think Kawartha ATV charges $15.00 a day if you aren't a member which includes your trail pass for the day, and a guided, organized trail ride. The other big advantage is no one gets left behind. If you are planning on going off exploring trails on your own, there is a lot more involved than just jumping on an ATV and heading off into the bush. Tire repair kits, safety gear, trail maps, there is a lot to learn if you want to do it safely.

No, the carb won't gum up but the diaphram can dry out and it will shorten the life of it. Old school was run em dry. Now it is recommended to use a good quality stabilizer and store them with the tank full.

Very sad, condolances to the family!

Could be a lot more wrong with it then.
