  1. That is why if I am giving someone information I will either PM or email them. I don't post anything specific on the open form anymore. You want to know what is really going on in my neck of the woods. You PM or email me. If you are a contributor I'll reply, if not, forget it!
  2. As a purchasing agent for a Canadian Corp. I do try to buy Canadian or at least North American products whenever I can. I have to tell you though when I can buy components made in China for less than 25% of what I can buy the similar product made in North America it sure makes it tough to convince the board of directors that we should buy locally made products. I have to be honest, often the off shore products are better quality than the NA made ones. I resent every dollar that goes off shore but if I did pay the higher price we couldn't be competitive and you could say good by to another Canadian employer.
  3. I totally agree! If you aren't willing to contribute then you are not a true OFC member in the spirit of OFC.
  4. Lew, when I lived in French River we often saw them around our house during the day. As soon as they saw us they would move away into the bush. My daughter has often had them in her back yard and never had a problem with them bothering her livestock, dogs, or them. The bears were just looking for an easy meal, bird seed, dog food, that sort of thing. Many times I encountered them while fishing, do not run, do not charge them, stand your ground and allow them to leave. I would say I have had in excess of 50 bear encounters, been between a mother and her cubs a couple of times, and never had a problem. I'm not suggesting you push it but that is my experience.
  5. I did and thank you very much, they will be putting fish in the boat! It's early yet and the fish were all holding close to bottom, very shallow and weedy. Those will have their place shortly though as soon as the fish move out and really start to feed. I'll be sending you pictures!
  6. When Sue and I decided to look for a place to retire we looked at everything from The French River to East of Peterborough. After 4 1/2 years of looking, we decided on the Lindsay area for many reasons. Excellent medical facilities, if and when we do need them, that was a big thing for us because of Sue's heart problems. We wanted a place that felt like country but was close enough to big city stuff if we wanted it. There are still some reasonable priced waterfront properties if you know where and what to look for. There is a great variety of fishing and hunting available within an hour of our place and if you do decide that retirement doesn't mean not ever working, there are plenty of jobs available for those that do want to work. Winters tend to be less severe than up North or even down South and gas is always about $0.06 a liter less than anywhere else around. Lastly, I can fish right here winter or summer, even right off my dock if I choose to and catch a wide variety of fish.
  7. My first question would be "if it blew a fuse as soon as you turned it on, what is wrong?" Never mind why are there 2 fuses in the circuit. A blown fuse means that the circuit is over loaded.
  8. We got one of those calls today, Sue told him there was nothing wrong with our computer, he called her a liar! That isn't a smart thing to call my wife, anyone that knows Sue knows she wouldn't lie to save her life. Sue was a lady and just handed me the phone, told me what he'd said and smiled. I wasn't nearly as polite as you were and told him point blank where I thought I'd like to put my computer, he still tried to convince me that he was from Microsoft and my computer had a virus but he could help me fix it. Lets just say I bet he learned a few Engilsh words he'd never heard before. I'd have kept going but he got the idea and hung up. This is about the 4th call we've had in the last two months like this, I wonder how many it will take before they get the idea?
  9. It's been an interesting weekend so far. Beagle Dad and I got out Saturday morning for a few hours, I really enjoy fishing with him, very knowledgable and an excellent fisherman. 4 walleye, a huge SM, a jumbo perch (biggest I've seen on Sturgeon Lake) a large crappie (still full of eggs) and a small but fiesty muskie. Not bad for a morning fishing. Carp are in full spawning mode, they are rolling all over the place in the shallows. Bly and I got out on Sunday morning for a few hours, two more walleye, another decent muskie cut my line right beside the boat, and another large crappie, again full of eggs, makes me think they haven't spawned yet, seems a little late though. Almost all fish were on bucktails, even the perch. Saw a guy bow fishing for carp, watched him for a few minutes, saw him shoot at a few but couldn't tell if he was making contact. Watched him retrieve his arrow a few times but didn't see him land any. My only concern is that if he did hit any, they are dead and will be left to float. I'm not a fan of killing anything for the fun of it but each to their own I guess. Water temperatures were in the 62 - 68° range. None of my deper holes produced anything but a few hits. I did talk to Shawn and he had picked up a few walleye in deep water trolling. I was out again this morning, wasn't nearly so lucky. Three hours and I didn't land a single fish. Tried everything I could think of, plastics, bucktails, spinners, every colour combination I had. Even a few never fail crank baits. had a few hits but couldn't set a hook. Never mind, it was still a perfect day, came back in, took wife and dog for a nice boat ride, got some more stuff done on the Honey Do list. Got Beagle Dad and his lovely bride coming over for a BBQ this PM, Life is good!
  10. I've tried all sorts of mouse traps and the old style cheep wooden work the best. Make sure you get the peanut butter inside the little loop on the trigger so it has to work to get it all out, place them along a wall as suggested. You will get them (yes, there is likely more than one). Once you are sure there are no more mice in there, spray the whole area with a mixture of bleach and water (10:1 ratio seems to work well) to disinfect it. Give everything a really good cleaning and disinfect again. Then always leave a trap set for the future just in case they ever find their way back again. Mice leave a scent trail that others can follow.
  11. When looking at the mower from the TOP down, the blade will be spinning clockwise, you always want the cutting edge to be the leading edge.
  12. No, it was obvious that it had been that way for a long time LOL. It's all fixed now though. Starts first pull and runs like a dream, if you think it cut grass before wait until you try it now!
  13. Well, couple of things. Don't toss the old motor until I have had a chance to look at it. Second I have a lawn mower here that I fixed for a guy last year then he decided he was going to buy a nice self propelled one and left his old one here. If you want it just give me the $52.00 I have in it for parts. I works like a charm.
  14. Well, I was right about what was wrong with Lew's mower but when I went to get the new diaphram that I thought I had in stock, it wasn't there. Must have used it to fix someone elses and forgot to buy a replacement. We also discovered that his blade was on upside down, you have no idea how many times I have seen that, it is an easy fix LOL. Sue is picking up the new diaphram and gasket today (and a spare set for stock) so I'll have it all fixed up this evening.
  15. All the very best to the young lady with the most beautiful smile! May all your dreams and wishes come true!
  16. Well, with everything else going on I guess I missed it. Better late than not at all! Happy Birthday.
  17. I'd cut em both down to the same size then you wouldn't have to choose!
  18. Sorry my friend, just waiting for Pikeslayer and Pikerslayer Jr. to get here and we are going to go get some walleye. Wiskeywizzard and son just headed out. But I will keep an eye on the board and you have my cell phone if you need it. We are getting Lew all fixed up tomorrow. It will be nice to see him again!
  19. Beans, you are a wise old man. CPH, you are a lucky young man!
  20. Lew, drop it off at my place, I'll have it fixed for you in no time. You have to remove the gas tank (2 bolts and un hook the throttle leaver) to remove the carb. The carb is then held to the tank by 5 screws (phillips). Under the carb is a diaphram and seal that goes between the tank and carb, (I have both here)those diaphrams have a habbit of when dried out loosing their seal on the outside edge. I can do it for you in half an hour NO CHARGE and it would be my pleasure to finally do something for you! 313 Snug Harbour Rd. Lindsay. Cell if you need it 705-928-8899 Hwy. 36 South from Bobcayegon to Kennedy Bay Rd. Turn right on Kennedy Bay Rd. To Snug Harbour Rd. (You'll be going down a hill and it will be on your left, the sign is a little hard to see). Left on Snug Harbour Rd. about 3km. to my place. Just let me know when you are coming and I'll try to be here so I can fix it while you wait. If it is during the week I work from 8to5 so you could either drop it off one day and pick it up the next or come by in the evening.
  21. The fist thing I would want to do is make sure your flywheel key isn't damaged at all. It is a fairly common problem with those chippers. Someone puts something too big in the chipper and jams it and the flywheel shifts slightly on the shaft. Throws the timing off just a bit and can make it very hard to start. After 7 years, might even be time for a tune up. DO NOT use the drill technique, it is very dangerous!
  22. On several occasions now I have observed members of a certain ethnic background fishing with apparent lack of respect for regulations and to be honest, just common courtesy. Examples; keeping everything they catch even when they know they are grossly exceeding the limit. Moving to within jumping distance of another boat or casting right on top of others if they see them catching fish. Unfortunately my experiences seem to be directed at one ethnic group but those are my only experiences with this sort of thing in over 60 years of fishing. Now I know there are members on this board of every ethnic background and plenty of lurkers so here is my question: Why? I have always judged a man by his actions, I have friends of every ethnic and religious background but I am finding myself starting to form a predigest. I don't like it but constant exposure to the attitude is wearing me down. I would truly like to understand the "why" behind all of this. It might help me to be a little more tolerant. So, if someone can enlighten me it would be truly appreciated. It might also help some others understand why so much resentment is forming towards them! Now Moderators, before you decide to lock this; I have not mentioned any specific ethnic group, any one that forms a conclusion does so of their own volition. I am not trying to promote any agression toward any particular group but I am trying to promote understanding. (for all) I ask that you be tollerant in allowing people to express their views in the hope that it will promote better understanding for all. I really think we need it or the agression is going to continue to grow. Understanding on both sides could help save a lot of fishing opportunities for all of us.
  23. Wish I'd seen Luc again today, two boats out here obviously not fishing pan fish and another boat with three guys in it with two big baskets and a cooler full of fish and keeping everything they caught. My buddy and I caught 60 fish in about an hour (kept about 15 between us) this other boat was catching as much as we were, keeping everything they caught and fished for several more hours. I did ask them if they realized the limit was 30, I was told they knew the limit but they kept right on fishing and keeping.
  24. Sitting on our deck yesterday there is a boat out in front of our place, a black Lund with a 60 Merc on it. One guy blue shirt, red cap. and he is fishing two lines. Well having the MNR tip line on my speed dial comes in handy so I called it in. A little later the guy moved off and I figured the COs must be busy somewhere else, oh well. My buddy and I decide to go fishing for a while. Didn't catch much so we decided to come back home. Just as we pulled up to my dock another boat comes in, he had the sun behind him so I really couldn't see him that well, I just figured it was one of my buddies stopping by to say hi. Well darned if it wasn't a CO. Really nice young man, Luc (didn't get his last name), we chatted briefly but then he went off to check out another boat, he must have nailed them for something because he was sure doing a lot of writing. Anyway It was really nice to see the MNR our here doing their job, he did mention that they had a couple of calls from Sturgeon lake yesterday so it is good to hear that people are getting involved and doing their part and it is working.
  25. I have been shopping in that store for years and really have never had a problem, I do like the staff. I just think that since the expansion the staff that they do have are spread a little thin. If you can flag someone down they are more than happy to help you in any way they can. I was in there on a Sunday morning so perhaps they were just short staffed.
