Looks like I will be doing a lot more fishing this year!
Big Cliff replied to lookinforwalleye's topic in General Discussion
I'm 67 and have no trouble finding work in sales (or related fields) so don't let the fact that you are 56 stop you! There is plenty of work out there if you want it! Take a bit of time, catch your breath, then when you are ready to go back to work put those sales skills to work and go sell yourself, you'll do fine. If you want some job leads let me know, I know plenty of companies looking for a good mature sales rep.. Attitudes have changed a lot in the last ten years, many companies are realizing the value in the experience, work ethic, and reliability that older workers bring to the table. There are also a lot of other options available to you if you are interested. TIOW, SEB, I can and would be very willing to help you with any of that if you would like. -
Nothing on the ground here but it sure is blowing a lot.

I won't pay it Beans, I park on a side street and walk over. I'll save my $3.00 a visit until I can't walk anymore.

Got all my rods out and cleaned, (10 of them) (had 11 of them but my nice little Fenwick snapped in three when I flexted the tip to show Sue how nice and sensitive it was). Cleaned my reels, lubricated and respooled the ones that needed it with Power Pro 8, (couldn't afford to do all of them). Made up all new florocarbon leaders, cleaned and sorted all my tackle (3+ boxes of it). I think I am going to have to buy a bigger boat just to haul all this stuff around with me LOL. Got the old docks all disassembled so I can salvage some of the lumber for the new ones, lumber for the new docks gets delivered on Wed.. Figured out how to make an adjuster for setting the dock heights so I don't have to work so hard at it anymore. It was really hard with the old dock system because you were trying to lift the frame and tighten the lock nuts at the same time. With the new adjuster it is easy for me to do it. Looks like ice out is going to be late this year, I'm guessing at least two more weeks there is still plenty of ice out in front of our place, a bit of open water in the river where it opens into the lake. Come on soft water Big Cliff needs some fish for the table!

A little far for me to come and help you with it I'm afraid but it shouldn't be too hard to install. Good idea to put one on it though, I have only had to use mine a couple of times but it sure is handy when you need it.

One of the buildings here in Lindsay that has Dr.s offices, a drug store, and Lab in it has paid parking, $3.00 flat rate so even if you run in to pick up a perscription it is $3.00. Everything in front of the building is marked as a fire route, $45.00 fine. Now ifn fairness, if you do get a perscription filled at the drug store, they will give you the $3.00. The hospital here is $4.00/half hour metered or $8.00 a day long term and for that you have to park about 100 meters from the entrance.

Do you mean that someone removed it? Electric/Pull start was standard on them. Where are you located?

Don't worry about it. Had the same thing happen to me, went to use my credit card to pay for some gas and it was declined. I knew there had to be a problem because I pay my credit cards off in full every month. Called the credit card company and sure enough they had put a hold on it because of unusual transactions. Turned out someone had bought $1600.00 worth of stuff at places I had never even heard of. No problem they took care of it all. Been thinking that next year at Christmas I'll give the wife my card, tell her to go shopping then call the card in lost or stolen Well mayby not!!!!!

Earnie, you aren't allowed to tell anyone about those remember

Well, at least now we should get the road fixed up I figure this new development should generate close to a million a year in tax revenu.

Right at the marina and across the road from it Roy. The whole marina property was bought out by a developer.

It seems every year another fishing spot is lost for one reason or another. I use to enjoy going over to a local marina for some crappie action in the spring, it was kind of a hit or miss spot but it was always quiet as not many people knew about it and it had been posted as no fishing from shore. Well this winter I noticed that there is now a sign posted at the entrance to the marina basin. I have checked into it and yes, the do own it and can leaglly post it. I have talked to the owner about it (really nice man) and they have had to post it for liability purposes. I'm disapointed but totally understand. Looks like we are going to have a development going in there also which could be starting this spring, some low rise town houses and some detached homes, think it is something like 28 units in all. Looks like we are going to be getting some new neighbors. On the bright side it will do a lot for our property values as they are talking high end homes and not a trailer park. Just heard that Lunge Haven Cottages sold. I had a chance to meet with the new owner yesterday William Lu. We had a really nice talk and he has quite a few improvements he wants to make there. Up grades to the cottages, store, and increase the business. We spent well over an hour just talking about cultures, ideas he had, perceptions. Things are changing so fast it is hard to keep up with it any more. Oh well, I guess that is progress LOL.

Thanks everyone for the good wishes and offers to help with the docks. This year I am going to try to make them so that they are lighter and easier to adjust once they are in place. I am thinking of actually hinging the first section on the shore side so that it can be left attached. The second and third sections I want to use jack posts for so that if the posts settle at all I can adjust back to level without having to take things apart as I have had to do in the past. I plan on making the deck out of deck board rather than 2X6 like the old one was, that will reduce the weight of the drop in panels by quite a bit and also allow me to make the decking 6' wide instead of the 5' it is right now. The new sections will be 12' long rather than the current 10' which will give me an additional 4' out into the lake and a return across the front of 18' instead of the 15' I did have. I am going to get the wood ordered today and should start building them next weekend ( April 6 & 7) so if anyone is around and wants to drop by you'd be most welcome. As always, you are all welcome anytime anyways even if it is only to drop by and visit, supervise, or run the BBQ.

Well it's like trying to quit smoking, if you keep trying sooner or later you might get it right. I'm 67 now and starting to feel it so mayby this time!

Well I know I have been down this road before but this time it's official I am now semi-retired. I tried it again last year but just couldn't slow down. Carma Industries in Lindsay needed someone to take over as a Purchasing and Inventory Coordinator so I decided to accept the position on a one year contract. Well as of March 11 my contract was up. I am proud of the fact that I was able to step into the position with minimal supervision and save the company over $300,00.00 in my first year, convince them to impliment a new inventory control system and train someone to take over the day to day responsibilities of doing the job. I am still working for them as a "Special Projects Coordinator" but with a much reduced work week and more as a consultant which is what I really needed and wanted. I'll probably look for a few other jobs in a consulting role but nothing full time anymore. So, while I have been absent for a while (after 8 hours a day sitting at a computer, the last thing I wanted to do when I got home was sit down at a computer again) I intend to get back into doing the things that mean most to me. I've already cleaned and sorted all my fishing gear, re spooled a couple of reels with Power Pro 8 (first time using it but I hear it is good) and this afternoon I'm going to start the redesign/building of my new docks. This time they are going to be bigger, lighter, and more sturdy than ever before. So get ready, Big Cliff is back!!!

I am rebuilding my docks this year and need about 8 jack posts 4-6' if anyone has any used ones that they want to get rid of, (or sell) I'm in the market.

Not a good topic to be discussed on this board, too many emotions involved.

Anyone with a very high mechanical aptitude could have figured that out LOL! (naturally there will be those that say "sure, it's a simple solution". Good on you Brenie, they say necessity is the mother of invention! I always love it when I can take bits and pieces of something and turn them into a solution.

Just a bit of an up date. I got to have a bit of lunch with Pikeslayer last Friday. There isn't much to report on Sean's condition, I guess guardedly optomistic is about the best way to put it. There are some very minor changes but boy it is slow! Little steps that make you want to hope but at the same time you are afraid to hope for too much. There is a chance that Sean could be transfered back to the GTA in the next 6-8 weeks which would be a big help to the family. Lets give those prayers and good thoughts another shot of Viagra (for you young guys that is just like thinking of a hot girl walking into the bar and locking her eyes on you) (for us older guys it's a little blue pill). Anyway the whole family is going to need our continued love and support so lets keep it up!
-
It is a slow process and there is still a long way to go but Sean has now been moved out of ICU. He is still in a coma but breathing on his own 100% and without oxygen. When they talk to him his heart rate increases which I guess shows recognition. It might seem like a small step but it is a positive step. His Mom and sisters are with him this weekend so that will help him I'm sure. Please keep those prayers, positive thoughts and emails going, each and every one of them helps not only Sean but the rest of the family too. BELIEVE! Big Cliff

NF What to do if your vehicle goes through ice
Big Cliff replied to woodenboater's topic in General Discussion
Well, first of all, when you get older and can't walk out or don't have all the money it takes to buy those fancy sleds and things, sometimes you take a chance you shouldn't have taken. You'll never know until it is too late that it was the wrong choice and I have never taken my car onto the ice thinking" I'll probably go through". I do tend to try to be very careful, I'm not the first to drive out to where I think the ice might not be safe but sometimes you make mistakes. The only people that never make mistakes are the ones that don't do anything. Are there idiots out there that just go "what the heck, lets see what happens". Sure there are but then there are people like me and many friends my age that just want to go fishing. We see that others have gone before us and made it with no problem so we take the chance too, For now, cut us some slack, try walking a mile in our shoes, then as my dear mother use to say" go piss up a rope!" -
Talk to bigugly he does and he also makes sinkers too!
