Looking for some ideas, suggestions, connections
Big Cliff replied to Big Cliff's topic in General Discussion
Another good idea. Thanks! -
Well if the crappie are such a big problem then why is there a limit on them? I know how we could do some real damage to the crappie population, just post it no limit on them and we'd have droves of people from Toronto coming up here and hauling buckets full of them home.

I'll talk to them when he gets back home on Saturday and get some answers for you. While the offers of cash are very generous, much appreciated, and so typical of the wonderful people on this board , I don't think that is required as much as trying to help them solve the bigger problem; finding a place to live from 1700 km away and getting their stuff there! I was also kind of hoping that if there was a member of this board that lived in the area or had family in the area they would be willing to kind of help the kids get to know their way around and make it easier for them to get settled. -
I think that the slot on Sturgeon Lake is perfect! All I ever want to keep is a few small ones for the table. I always released anything 3 lbs or over before the slot was put in place anyway.

Wow, some really helpful tips here! Thanks so much! I do know that they would like to be outside of the city, they have two (very well behaved and very clean) dogs so they are hoping to find something with a yard or area that the dogs can run. These kids are not sissies by any means, both have spent time in Labrador working way out in the bush. He is a wild life specialist and spent many years trapping coyoties and other critters and tagging them. She has a degree in environmental studies so she is quite at home in the country. They have been looking at places on Kijijji and things but it is a little hard to know what you are getting into when you are so far away. Johnny, I'll pass this info along to them, he is in Hamilton on a training course for the new job right now but will be here on Saturday. Thanks again for all your help everyone! if anyone else has any ideas please keep them coming, more is better! -

My insurance covers me no matter what I am driving so that won't be a problem. Good thought though! -

Good thought! We'll look into that one too. Thanks! -
Open water in the Scugog River where it opens into Goose Bay. I'm thinking at least two weeks before we can get a boat in the water though.

Ya, I'm a little surprised that no one else has chimed in, I'm not looking for donations! They are willing to rent a truck and cover all the expenses, they just can't afford the $2078.00 bucks U Haul would cost. I sort of thought someone on here might be able to offer some ideas on how we could help these kids. It isn't like they are sitting on their butts looking for a hand out, just a bit of a hand. They are both hard workers and have invested their money in getting good educations, that is starting to pay off as he has just been offered a really good job in Halifax. I thought it would be nice if we could help them along and do a good deed. -
Well, as Beans explained it so well; a little building with some Dr.s offices in it can garner $5000.00 a day. I wonder what the parking at Lindsay Hospital generates in a day. The parking space there probably generates more revenue than the rest of the hospital on a sq ft basis. Golden handshakes, stupid pensions, $100,000.00 a year + saleries, the working man is paying for it through the nose. $12.00 an hour to park is just plain stupid, a lot of the people that are stuck paying it are working for minimum wage. These aren't the people that can afford to go to a casino and drop a couple of hundred bucks, these are the average person, working people, pensioners, seniors. Go into Emerge and you are lucky if you can get in and out in under a couple of hours. As far as needing the extra income to provide services, I thought that was what the health care tax was all about! Sorry but a government that tells us that smoking is causing health problems then taxes the stop smoking aids is just blowing smoke up our butts at our expense.

How to stop starter battery blue build up...
Big Cliff replied to mike rousseau's topic in General Discussion
I wouldn't use dielectric grease on it, it doesn't conduct. Use battery terminal grease, it will protect the connection. -
And there you have the answer, a 20 lb beagle scared off a 200 lb black bear. Ask yourself why? Do you think the bear was afraid of something not a lot bigger than a jackrabbit? If the bear had really wanted to eat that beagle it could have but rather than a confrontation the bear chose to run away. Why do you think that a 200 lb bear would want to take on a 200+ lb human, doesn't make any sense at all that it would run away from a 20 lb dog but take on something 10 times the dogs size. The dog chased the bear but it didn't try to run up and kill it, it made a nusance of itself, the bear moved away, the dog only followed it until it was sure the bear kept going. If the bear had turned back on the dog it would have retreated enough to keep out of reach but kept up the noise. Ever walked down a street and had a dog run out at you? Run away it will follow, stop and walk toward it and it will back off but it will keep up the racket until you finally leave the area. The dog won! You meet a bear in the bush, keep your head, don't turn your back, if it does fake a charge stand your ground, look it in the eyes! Unless that bear has no other choice (and I mean NO OTHER CHOICE) it will leave. It always amazes me when I see a grown man that is afraid to pick up a mouse or something like that. What do they think the mouse is going to do? Eat them? A fish hook through the ear lobe, no big deal but a mouse might bite you LOL?

Well, crappie from ice out until walleye opens then walleye, walleye, walleye for this guy! I owe a couple of guys a REALLY good fishing trip and intend to try and give them a day to remember. Then I still have lots of other people I want to fish with this year. Last year work got in the way, this year Fishing is going to get in the way of work!
-
Two, Two, you have seen me fish LOL. Not sure if he is coming for opener but he'll be up close to it. Unless things warm up in a hurry I have a feeling the fish will still be in the river on opener.

I'm trying to figure out how I can get my charger down to you or your battery up here. Might be able to work out some kind of a relay with a little help from some other members. Even if we can get the battery up to Milton, I have to go down there in the next week or so to pick up a fridge and dishwasher to help a friend out. If you could get the battery to Milton, I can take care of getting up here and back down if we can get it working.
-
Still have two left from last year LOL, Besides, I know a guy who knows a guy

Looks like he had quite a bit of stuff in the back of the truck, I wonder if he was trying to get some gear out to a cottage or something.
-
OK, it is a Motomaster Intelligent automatic battery charger. If I remember correctly they are about $90.00 but I think I only paid about $65.00 for it on special. I'd gladly lend you mine to try if we can arange to get it to you.
-
I too have spent many years in the bush and had many bear encounters. I echo your thoughts and comments. You are more likely to have a run in with a skunk or raccon in your camp than a bear.

Wow Paul, that is so typical of you. You don't even know them, might never even meet them but as usual step right up and offer to help. I am going to keep your offer on the back burner for the time being if that is ok with you. I would like to try to find a way to help them without bailing them out with cash if we can. If anyone has a small truck that we could borrow/ rent, I would be willing to drive their stuff down there for them, I figure if I can find a co-driver we could do the return trip in three days allowing for loading, unloading, and traveling time. It is about 3500 KM round trip from here. -
The young couple that stayed with us this past winter while going to school here in Lindsay have a bit of a challange and I am hoping we can help them out. He has just landed a job in Halifax and has to move there for the end of April. She is pregnent and expecting in Aug. they don't have a lot of money but they are both super nice kids and both love fishing. So, I am looking for anyone that has connections in Halifax, they are looking to rent a three bedroom house. And yes, we've been looking on all the appropriate web sites, there are some available but it would be really nice if they could have some contacts when they get there. Also if anyone knows of a room he could rent there for a week or two until he gets things settled. I am also trying to find a way we can get their furnature to Halifax for them, they don't have a lot of stuff, it would easily fit in the back of a 5 ton cube van with plenty of room to spare. I thought about renting a U Haul trailer but don't have anything big enough to tow it. U Haul truck, $2078.00 for a 10' truck which would be big enough but that is a lot of money to move what little stuff they have. If anyone hauls to Halifax and has some room to spare on a trailer and wants to pick up some extra cash that might work. Thoughts, ideas?

I got mine at CTC, I'll get you the name and mak tomorrow. It automatically senses a sulphyted battery and goes into a "mode' to try to desulphite it. Hasn't worked on every one but better than half of all the ones I've tried have gotten me another year out of them. The better the quality of the battery, the better the results seem to be.

I have a charger that will desulfiate many batteries, I have been able to recover several that would have gone to scrap. Might be worth a try.
