We have always had ice out here by April 15th. I'm willing to bet a beer that our bay will still have ice in it by the end of April this year.

Now this sounds like a perfect way to spend a couple of days fishing! I'd sure be interested in doing a mid week trip with a quality outfitter like this!

Too slow for some is too fast for others! Your driving skills, experience and vehicle may make it plenty safe to do 100 on snow covered slick highways with limited visibility. To someone else that is way beyond their comfort level and 80 is where they feel they have the experience and skill level to be comfortable. I often see the ones that think they are better drivers than they are as I pass them in the ditch and I am always greatful that they are in the ditch rather than head on into someone else that was doing the 80 or whatever. Yesterday I stopped twice to help people who thought they were better drivers than they were, fortunatly they were the only ones that ended up needing tow trucks. If you really think you are a good driver and you should go as fast as you can without going off the road then perhaps you need to re evaluate your driving skills! Driving according to conditions means always having control of your vehicle, that means road and traffic conditions! Max. speed limits are posted for roads that are clear and dry they are not a target that you should try to attain no matter what.

Ouch! Propane Heating Cost in the Kawartha's
Big Cliff replied to manjo39's topic in General Discussion
Just had mine filled testerday $0.999 -
I had to work in that mess yesterday Lindsay to Barrie to Bowmanville and back home. Lots of people driving way too fast for the road conditions and not leaving enough space between them and the car in front of them. Unless you have been in a "white out" you have no idea what it is really like. One second everything is fine, the next second it is like someone put a white sheet over your windshield and you just can't see anything at all. You don't know if there is something in front of you, you can't see the snow banks or sholder of the road or if there is anything coming at you, you might as well be blind. I tend to slow right down when the conditions get bad, if I am going to have an accident I want it to be at slow speed but sure as god made little green apples there is always some idiot that wants to ride my ass. If I can do it safely, I pull over and let them go, you'd be surprised at how many of them I see in ditches or worse a little further down the road.

Who is akaShag and why is he here? (Introduction)
Big Cliff replied to akaShag's topic in General Discussion
Well Doug, I have to tell you if that really is a picture of you, you have a double named Dennis (my first wife ran away with him and he's been trying to bring her back for over 30 years now). All kidding aside (and I am serious about the double) Welcome to the board! There are several of us old farts on here that were brought up in the days when fishing and hunting were for food not for sport as it is today. I still carry a lot of the old values with me; don't take more than you can use and if you do get more then you share it. Always give a man a hand up rather than a hand out, Well from the posts I have seen so far we share a lot of the same ideals! I hope we get an opportunity to share some time together this year! I'm up on Sturgeon Lake in the Kawarthas, if you are ever inclined to head this way give me a shout! -
Oh, Moe needs lots more help than just getting back on line (did I say that out loud?) LOL. Just kidding, Moe is one of my favorite people, heart of gold that gal!

NF Hitting Deer or other large wildlife on the highway
Big Cliff replied to mercman's topic in General Discussion
OK, I am sorry but you are going about it all wrong! Drive down the road like you are trying to hit a deer! Now I speak from experience, I have been driving for over 50 years in some very highly deer populated areas. I have tried on a number of occasions to hit a deer or a turkey and the suckers always manage to get out of the way in time. This isn't a joke actually, almost all of the car "deer/turkey" collisions come when someone is trying to avoid the animal, the animal gets confused and reacts and the driver isn't prepaired or can't respond in time. If you aim for where the animal is, (unless it is in the ditch) it probably won't be there when you are. -
My favorite "craw type" bait isn't a plastic at all, it is a bucktail jig. Color depends on a lot of factors so a selection of colors and weights is esential but I have a few favorites.

Moe, It was really nice to see you again and I knew one of our "super techs" would be able to help you with your internet problem. Glad to see you vocal again!

Looks like there was a really good turn out again this year, sorry I couldn't stick around to get to see many of my old friends but I had to be somewhere else so a quick visit in the morning was the best I could do. Next year, the good lord willing I intend to be back at my normal post (hopefully with a couple of my trusty sidekicks) and helping with the food side of things! (if my help is needed that is, things looked pretty well organized when I was there). I was just wondering if the final count is in for attendance, and totals and I know Elisa had some pictures as well. Kudos to all that donated, participated, and helped out!
-
OK, I just got advised that I have a change of plans and I will be there about 9 ish. to drop off the money for the auger attachments but I won't be able to stay long. Brian if you are going to be out on the ice, you can leave them with Elisa for me if that is ok.
-
I will be there on Saturday but not until about 1:00 pm, sorry, it is the best I can do!
-
I would do it for Roy as quick as I would do it for you Beans!

Storm is on the way--Are you ready for it???
Big Cliff replied to npt1's topic in General Discussion
I have a feeling Simco is going to be nothing but slush for this Saturday, it is going to take a few days of cold weather for this to firm up. -
I personally wouldn't but then I won't use Facebook or a lot of other sites or apps that I feel my information could be accessed easily by someone else. As for a fishing log; I keep most of mine in my head so it is always accessable, cell phone or not.

Storm is on the way--Are you ready for it???

Was West bound on 48 last night about 6:30 just out side of Beaverton. Car kept riding my tail so I pulled over and let it pass me. About 5 km further up the road I passed her again but she was upside down in the ditch. Stopped long enough to make sure she wasn't hurt, got her into another car that had stopped and left. Quite a mess to drive in, couldn't believe the number of people that wouldn't dim their lights (until I hit my Hi beams). Saw a couple of other cars in ditches but no serious accidents gladly. Hope all of you were safe out there! -
We rent our basement appartment out to students every fall winter and have another lady who rents it from us from May to Sept.. She has just informed us that she is going to be taking it the odd week this year because of work issues. We are thinking that we might rent this out on a weekly or monthly basis this summer but Sue thinks we should be asking at least $750.00 a week and I'm not sure. Here is what it includes: Bright, clean, fully furnished (just renovated) two bedroom apartment, kitchen and large family room with gas fireplace, four piece bath, and docking on the shores of Sturgeon Lake, gas BBQ, High speed WiFi, and HD TV (360 chanels). Supply your own bedding, towels, food and booze. Pets would be welcome as long as they are friendly and you clean up after them! Now to be honest this isn't a beautifully sandy beach, there are lots of nice places to swim close by but there are some weeds here (fishing though is pretty good right off the dock LOL). Muskie, Bass, Walleye, carp and hundreds of pan fish. I am trying to get an idea of what would be a fair price to charge for something like this so please give me some feedback!

2" here too Steve, I wouldn't be too worried about it. I'll do a drive by tomorrow if you would like just to be sure! -
I have used my drill with an 8" fin bore 3 and it didn't have any problem at all other than it only drilled about 12 holes through 18" of ice per battery.

How does one man hold so much knowledge and expertiese? Art you never fail to amaze me with your vast wealth of knowledge, your generosity, and your ability to answer the most complex questions with such clarity. Thank you!
-
Thanks Art, that explains a lot. I guess I am really old school. It seemes that it is more about the handle today! For me, it was more about the usability and function of the knife. How well does it hold an edge, is the shape of the blade condusive to the application, too sharp won't stay sharp against bones, too much angle won't slice clean. Interesting how priorities seem to have changed.

I would be interested in knowing who if anyone intends to guide on Sturgeon Lake in the 2014 season (speciffically for walleye). What your rates are for the day and were do you launch out of. Also, the style of fishing (trolling, jigging.......) When you intend to start, when do you move off to other bodies of water or species? Any other information you care to share with me. I might have some business for you!
