  1. great report! my buddies and i keep saying we are going to do a trip like this sleeping over night in the winter but have yet to do it. and i find the weather is always pretty nasty in the park. there always seems to be a strong wind that comes off superior just to ruin a nice day but we go for the great fishing and not the weather!
  2. im not worried about being quiet for the fishes sack but for me to enjoy nature with having to listen to an engine and yes i have a minn kota. dara if i do end up getting a new motor you can have first dibs at my 9.9. If you are looking for a motor my buddy has a mid 90's 15hp evinrude. its the exact same motor has the 9.9hp but has different carbs and muffler. it trolls down the same as mine but it has wayyy more top end. the last time i talked to him he was looking to get around $350. he wants that little because he dropped it and snapped off the handle with the throttle and has no desire or time to get around to fixing it.
  3. thanks guys. i might just keep what i have. i was hoping for some magic motor that is just plain all around awesome. and i was looking at the yamis and they are a 4stroke that you can store different ways and not spill it.
  4. My 9.9hp runs like a top. i maintain it , i get it tuned up every spring. The motor is now what like 14years old. im looking to upgrade to something new and better. i dont have a trailer just put the boat in the back of my truck and put the motor in the boat so im constantly carrying it around. so im looking for something reasonably light, the trolls good and has close to the same power.
  5. i have a 12' tinner with a 1999 9.9hp Evinrude. I was thinking about buying a new lighter low fumes 4stroke motor. theres lots of brands out there and don't know much about them. my buddy has a little mercury 3.5hp and that little thing flies i say goes just as fast as a 7hp 2stroke, burns hardly any fuel. i want something with close to the same top speed as my 9.9hp but can still idle down and troll nice and slow oh and quietly to. i was thinking around a 5hp 4stroke with external tank?? your opinions please! ohhh and if anybody is interested in my motor msg me. im in sault ste. marie ontario
  6. my buddy has an old "trappers" 12' its only like 36" wide and we put a 15hp on the back of it. hollly that thing flies! the transom started to pull around and we reinforced it with some angle iron. good as new. i think you'll be fine, reinforce it if you are worried.
  7. i have the normark auger that rod caster posted. 3-4years ago i was looking for that auger and couldnt find it anywhere. one day i was in the local tackle shop and there was one sitting on the desk. i asked the if it was for sale and he said sure but it was the last one of his stock and it was bought and returned and the guy said it didnt work. the blades were all chewed up, the guy must have drilled into a rock first hole and returned it. The guy at the tackle shop called the manufacture and said there is zero left and its a discontinued item but they do still sell replacement blades for it and sent me a free set. so i bought it for a discounted price put the new blades on it and works amazing! so good luck finding one unless some store in Florida accidently got one sent to them and its been sitting there for years. i wouldnt sell mine for $1000! the old mora swede bore are bullet proof augers. before the normark i used one for years and its fallen off the back of my sled and taken a beating. i even lost a blade and it still cut with one blade! ohhh and if anyone would like a folding 10" mora manual auger from the early 90's i got one. that beast will keep you warm all day out on the ice!
  8. i've driven past that lake dozens of times,i fished alot of lakes in the area with specks, lakers, and pike. i've been wanting to try it. its a pretty large lake. if i were to try fishing it i'd troll with a crankbait(rapala xrap) you'll definitely get some pike on that. and assuming your fishing with a buddy rig their rod with some kind of harness/spinners for walleye. white lures work great in other lakes in the area. if you want to find out about some other places to fish let me know. and if you plan on camping there it kind of sucks, most of the camp sites are right on the edge of the highway but i know some good spots off the beaten path.
  9. yup! i press the off button and the thing comes right back on at around 40km. im soooo annoyed, i cant get this stupid van home or now i dont have the balls to try it again without like chains or something on the tires. i was doing searching online and guys can hook up programers and they can set the amount of braking power and power lost when the stabilitrak/ traction control comes on and set it to like zero power so it still works but is really doing nothing. i have zero confidence with this van, im at a loss and making very difficult arranging to get home when my wife gets off work so we can take our good old reliable 4x4 truck home.
  10. it has some cheapo mud/snow tires on it that look like slicks/cheapo all seasons im talking to my boss about getting better tires for it, maybe some studded winter tires?
  11. ya there is an "off" button i push and hold it. on my dash it says "traction control off" "stabilitrak on" i continue pushing and it shuts off both. i go on some ice hit the gas to spin the tires and the thing kicks in again and shows on my dash that its back on. so if i press it once and take the traction control off and leave the stabilitrak on that it will make it feel like a regular vehicle?
  12. this spring i started a new job and one of the perks is i get a new 2012 work van that i can take home at night. its a 2012 chevy express with stabilitrak/traction control. i live out at the lake and the road in is a twisty hilly gravel road with 2 steep hills at the beginning of the road. monday we got dumped on and the road got real icy. monday evening im driving home and i gun it up these 2 hills and im almost up the second one and my tires start spinning and the stabilitrak/tractinal kicks in and it basically shut down the motor and locked up the brakes! i slid backwards down the hill smashing into the grade rail! some other ppl came along and pushed my front end to spin me around and back down the hill i went. i smashed up the back fender and bumper and im pretty upset. this new "safety" feature is a bunch of b.s!! i turned it off and i tried to spin the tires on some ice to see if its actually off and it automatically turns itself back on. i've done some searching online and in the manual and basically from what i read is that you can temp. turn it off to get plowed out if your stuck! what the hell!?!? how does that make any sense?1? if i pull the fuse for it online it says it will turn off stabilitrak, traction control AND my ABS. it seems that this van is just destine for failure or just cant do icy hills what so ever!. so now im trying to figure out what to do so i can get this computer on wheels home every night in one piece. you think get some studded tires for the back and hope they dont spin or throw a set of chains on it every night when i get to my road or am i missing something? ohh and this stabilitrak/traction control is awesome around town, like pulling out into traffic, taking off at a light, or going around corners without fish tailing it.
  13. best hand auger around!! they dont make that folding model anymore so keep it forever and ever! i got the same one and if someone offered me $500 i'd tell them nice try!
  14. i have a pile of large baits for pike and i've tried them countless times and all i get is hammer handles the same size as the lures. i've caught lots of large pike in the 40s on #10 rapalas. my largest musky i got it on a fat rap. my largest walleye i got with a #8 rapala. largest speck on a 1/3oz little cleo. i've tried large lures and they never produce large fish. i've always found small lures catch larger fish. i dont know exactly why but i figure they get the feed bag on and go for lots of small easy meals then chill.
  15. i got the bfg all terrains and love them. they have a good rep. and have been around for a long time. best bang for your buck and they are louder then regular all season tires but not as loud as most. they are nothing close to mudders. best bang for your buck.
  16. http://www.overshoe.com/Pages/Product.aspx?category=STABILicers%C2%AE&cat=HLS-OVERSHOE&pid=N5P3S bessst boots ever! i've had these for 3 years and havent failed me yet. i show up to the lake in my favourite comfy running shoes and i slip these on. sooo light and comfy! feels like all im wearing is my favourite running shoes and they are warm!! ive been out in the -30s with warm feet. and they have removable studs for the slick ice.
  17. $1.39L here in the sault. drive over the bridge to the states and its $4 a gallon
  18. didnt get out nowhere near the times i use to, and just average trips and average fish, nothing stands out. no pbs or record amounts.
  19. relocate the brook trout in the lake. they are more then welcome to stock my lake!
  20. they actually do the man hunt and see how it plays out then they act out what happened when they film. so its reality but fake.
  21. i borrowed a boat once on a remote lake, i got back to the launch after a day of fishing with the owner waiting for his turn. i dont think he was to happy with me but didnt say much and stashed it on the other side of the lake. i didnt think being so remote and always being the only one on the lake that we'd show up at the same time would happen. im not ever doing that again i felt bad. and i had my boat stashed at a lake and someone took it on me. hide your boat really really good.
  22. are the government employees apart of the army and shooting them with bombs like they did for years into the lake? hahaha! ive seen them on a few lakes around but nothing like the south, but there is one lake north of the sault that they destroyed, this hunting season a few stray shots may go flying that way.
  23. i watched it and it wasnt as good as i thought it'd be. and i was also hoping there would be sault stuff but no southern michigan and thunderbay. i'll keep watching it might get better.
  24. i use shimano 2500s and they hold more then enough line for any type of fish in ontario and are light and comfortable. for the average general purpose fishing rod the 2500 is the way to go.
