Drive-in Eastern Ontario Fishing Help
the spirit of fishing replied to riverwader's topic in General Discussion
For over twenty years (until 2022) I was part of a group that would go to the Shining Tree area for a week of fishing. Age caught up to most of our group and because of the remoteness we decided to stop going there. We found success with walleye, bass, splake, speckled trout, lake trout, rainbow trout and pike. Our trips were usually the last week of May though we did take a few trips in September. The May trips were usually the most successful but we did ok at the end of September too. We selected the trout lakes we targeted using stocking lists and travelled various forest access roads to get to them. There's lot's of walleye, pike and bass lakes in the area too. Check out the Fish On Line tool to get an idea. If you want more specific info I can give it to you by "PM'. -
I don't want to sound like a politician but I agree with what everyone has said. Around the GTA it may not snow enough to warrant the extra tires. However, they're not just for added traction in snow. They are recommended whenever the temperatures drop below 7 celsius to decrease stopping distances as well as increase traction in snow. So that would include the entire province in the winter. We live east of Ottawa and get at least our share of snow. My wife has dedicated snow tires on her Nissan Sentra. She still has to go to Ottawa for work. My truck has all weather tires on all year since I'm retired and usually don't have to travel if the weather is too bad. Both sets of tires have the three peaks markings so they are eligible for a 10 % discount on our insurance. I have also bought winter tires for my daughter who lives in North Bay. She didn't think they were necessary 🙄 but now won't go without them. As has been said there are alternatives to spending a lot to get them. For everyone's safety it makes sense. Therefore our politicians won't make it a requirement.

I have a trifold hard cover on my truck. On my previous truck I had this cover for 4 1/2 years with zero issues : https://www.costco.ca/tonnopro-lo-roll-premium-vinyl-roll-up-tonneau-cover.product.100016100.html . However I decided I liked the look and added security of the hard tonneau for my new truck. After having the hard cover for 3 years it's a decision I regret because: 1) loading and unloading from the truck bed is more difficult , 2) the panels are a bit heavy so my short wife can't handle them from the ground, 3) the front panel is always down on the box rails unless the cover is completely removed , more extra work After having the hard cover I was thinking of the added security and I realised that most people around my home have soft covers. I have NEVER heard of anyone having a tonneau cover cut open or broken into, around here on anywhere. Although I'm sure it has happened somewhere how likely is it to happen? I'm actually considering changing mine back to the roll up type. Just my feelings, hope it helps. -
Balsam Lake Fishing Report May 16-20 2024

Good work and thanks for the report. Hope to see many more reports in the future.👏 -
I remember the last cup win too. Before I retired my co-workers would give me grief about the Leafs last cup win. They would usually go quiet when I said "I went to 4 Stanley Cup parades for Leafs championships. How many have you been too for your team?" Hopefully I'm around for the next one. I'm not confident it will be this year but as long as they're playing there's a chance.

Happy to hear the good guys won this round. Really fortunate the warden responded so quickly.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Sounds like he had a happy life and you were his best friend. It will be tough for awhile but you will have your memories to cherish forever.

I stayed in Nipigon with my family in 2022. Unfortunately I wasn't able to escape them while there to do any serious fishing. I did speak with the guy who owns this place and he was very forthcoming with information so I recommend you contact him. https://nipigonriver.com/ He also has a fishing guide from 2021 you can download for free that covers the area or buy the updated one for $19.99 (he told me there was very minimal changes from 2021 and the 2021 edition would be just as useful). Check the regulations as I think brook trout is already closed in the Nipigon River.

Anybody been to Houston Lake Camp?
the spirit of fishing replied to kickingfrog's topic in General Discussion
I went to Shining Tree for twenty years until 2021. One time we were coming back from a splake lake and stopped in there to check it out although we never stayed there. The camp looked quite nice. Our group preferred a more rustic camp so we never went beyond just visiting. Most of our trips were in the spring but we did take some fall trips when grouse hunters were around. We didn't hunt but the hunters seemed pleased with their success. If you decide to go and want some info on fishing in the area let me know. We targeted walleye, specks, lakers, rainbow, aurora and splake. Lots of smallmouth and pike in the area too. The picture in my avatar is the aurora I caught in that area. -
Ran across this today and thought some might be interested. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/fishing-tournament-cheating-guilty-jacob-runyan-chase-cominsky/

I've been a volunteer with the local Food Bank since 2017. Along with some other retired gentlemen we do the weekly grocery shopping every Tuesday morning. We also get dispatched to pick up donations from all areas of the community and when needed fill in for the actual distribution to our clients on Thursdays. I find it very satisfying being able to give back to the needy of our area and the days I spend working at the Food Bank are the highlights of my week. Bernie

A NUNAVUT NOMAD VIII. The Ivitarulik "Red"emption.
the spirit of fishing replied to Moosebunk's topic in General Discussion
A wonderful read. Looking at the pictures of those beautifully coloured fish I feel envious. However as you explain so well, you make sacrifices to have the opportunity of catching them. I selfishly hope you aren't demoralized to the point of giving up your northern adventures. The patients you see while there surely feel that way too, even if lots of them act like jerks. Thank you again for your time and effort to share with us. -
Hi Everyone, Looking for fishing info while on family vacation. We'll be staying in Nipigon Aug 8-12 doing mostly touristy things like Terry Fox memorial, amethyst mines, Kakabeka Falls, Sleeping Giant, etc. Just curious if anyone knows if it would be worthwhile dropping a line in the river while there? Of course I'd love to have the opportunity to get into some specs but would be satisfied with other species. Would trout or salmon be in there that time of year or is that just wishful thinking? Might even take a charter if one was available and seemed promising. August 12-20 we'll be staying with my brother at his cottage on Nagagamisis Lake. It's supposed to have walleye and pike in it. Does anyone have any info on what we can expect as this will be my chance to spend more time fishing. While at my brother's I will have access to a boat however no boat available while in Nipigon. Happy to get PM's if you prefer. Thanks Bernie
