Any where carry a large selection of outboard manuals and carb kits?
camillj replied to wask's topic in General Discussion
I got one off ebay for like 10 bucks ... same guy had the gasket kit and impeller ... -
Somethings not right ... normally the issue is that it turns toooo freely so you have to keep a hand on it at all times (which can also be a pain esepecially when you are trolling and fiddling with stuff I think the grease idea is a good one ... but I'd be suspicious about it having been submerged at some time ... if it is NEW, I would ask the dealer to fix it ... maybe theres another adjustment (some of them have a lever in the front as well as the screw)

As the 3 HP turns... '63 3HP starts with choke out - choke in = DEATH

Does the ball collapse ... or go soft ... have you tried pumping the ball when you give it gas ... could also be a problem with the fuel line/tank/pump valve ... its amazing how often the motor is fine its the tank/fuel line that are the cause of the problem .... -
If its hard to start but runs well it almost certainly an electrical issue ... plugs or coils/points .. both really cheap to fix...could also just be a matter of fiddling with your choke ... I have found that if you follow the this sequence then it should start most times quite easily ... a) Prime pump 'till the ball is hard and be sure the cap is loosened (or the air breather cap) on the gas tank - be sure gas line isnt kinked or under anything pull choke out all the way c) ensure gear lever is in neutral d) set throttle to fast (at least half way past start) e) pull once (if it tries to start push choke in and give it more gas right away) f) if not push choke in half way g) pull again ... NORMALLY will start right up ...if not check your plugs make sure they are clean and gaped correctly Those older Johnsons are the BEST ... I own two and you got a STEAL at $200 even if it needs some TLC .... good luck... also ... with the newer 2 stroke oils you dont need to get silly on the mixture ... a little less is actually better ... I go closer to 75 or 100 : 1 ... burns cleaner, less smoke, starts easier and doesnt tend to bog down ... just dont run wide open throttle all the time ...

Just wondering about proximity to your compass ... one of the boater card questions made reference to VHF interfering with compass ... have you had any trouble with that on your setup Drifter ?

Interesting ... I am looking for a boat myself (and I recently bid on one and got outbid with like 3 seconds to go) ... my question to the professionals is what SHOULD the process of buying a used boat look like ... of course I would go SEE the thing and take it out for a spin before I actually paid ... but .. seriously ... even then, how can you be sure its not just some guy showing you someone elses boat at the marina ... papers or no papers ... and if you were the seller I guess you need to get a certified cheque to be sure you are gonna be paid ....definitely scary business when big dollars are involved ...

Either that .. or .. when you whisper in its ear ... just after it goes to sleep ...and then get slapped upside the head

NF Boat help *please help* dont know what to do
camillj replied to bigredfisher's topic in General Discussion
Not sure how long you had it running for ... you really want to be sure you got all the water out of the head before running it .. water doesnt compress so it can do damage to the head ... pull the plugs .. stand it upside down in the sun for an hour ... I would try not to let it sit too long (I assume it is still on the boat ... until you have it going ... if it rusts inside it will sieze ... and things will rust very quickly if its still got water in it ... if the gas tank breather was open it may have taken in a little water too ... that could explain the bogging Anyhow best bet would be to get some fogging oil into the head as son as possible while you let it dry out properly... also may have to check the 'pee hole' to make sure you are still pumping water ... sometimes lakebottom goo will get in the lines and clog it up ... very important to clear that before running it for any period of time. -
He is in my thoughts and prayers

Take a tiny piece of fresh worm and put it on the hook ... scent does matter .. and if you're not in a tournament (where it may not be permitted) .. just adding a little 'meat' can make all the difference .... if scent is the differentiator... It sure does when we are fishing for specks ... like 100% difference ...

Wow .. lotta downers on this boat... Rich... I did it ... with my wife and two kids (not Bermuda - but another small Island) .. for 2 years ...and not for the money ... and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat .. was it all disneyland ... no of course not .. it was LIFE ... but it was a life that really gave me and my kids a broader appreciation for what we have here in Canada ... and for what we dont .... my Bro-in-lo was in Bermuda for 2 years that got extended so many times we werent sure he'd ever come home ... with his wife .. and they had a child while there .... they're back now but as I said I am sure he could answer every question you have about being a Canadian living and working in Bermuda ... taxes, costs, housing , pubs, boating whatever

My Brother in law just got back .. his 2 year stint was closer to 12 by the time it was all said and done and it was time to get back to 'reality' ... but I am sure he would go back in a flash if he had it to do all over again ... Life my friend is ALLL about the journey .... and those who are the envy of the rest later on in life are the ones who took the chance and went on that journey .... Happy to hook you up for information exchange ... remember, opportunities like this dont come up every day .. especially when your other responsibilities and obligations dont have to take priority
