  1. this time of year- a chinny? a brown? there's a ton of alewives to be chased in there
  2. dude, I've driven in my brother's TDI Jetta 5 speed, up to Nakina quite a few times, summertime, hiway cruising all the way, 1300 km per tank????? driving to work and where-ever in the GTA I see alot of cars on the road (waaaaay too many actually), I take note of what vehicle is broken down, hood-up, on the cell phone person, at the side of the road, no I don't have concrete stats, just an observation the 10 years to recoup $5000 for the diesel was using 20 000km per year, yeah, drive more= recoup the initial $$$ quicker was there much work needed to keep your 600k VW on the road? the front ends (CV joints, tie rods etc) on those things are pretty weak
  3. bad news for sure like a previous post, I've always thought Fushimi and Ivanhoe were busy (at least when I've been there), doesn't make sense when I first heard this story on the news, I thought Missinaibi Lake (Barclay Bay) would be on the chopping block (thankfully not, it's a great place too) couldn't they just reduce services and manpower at these parks to make them profitable and keep them going? in other news, Mcguinty continues to spend like a drunken sailor while cutting services and freezing wages to help with the deficit- 300 million for a new pool in Toronto for the upcoming Pan (nobody gives a F#@$) Am Games, what a genious!
  4. totally, I'd rather go up north, away from everyone, and even catch nothing, rather than participate in that ugly scene you're lucky to live where you do DanC, the GTA sucks
  5. I did the math (when I was shopping for a car for my wife), diesel fluctuates like gas, but using historical prices, it would take about 10 years to recoup the $5000 this might start abit of a debate, but pay attention what cars are broken down on the side of the hiway, what cars have 1 headlight or tail-light, etc, VW's are poor cars, I've had 2 myself too (non- turbo diesels)so this isn't just off the cuff
  6. The US and Canada aquired shares in GM and Chrysler during the bail-out, share prices were low at the time, both countries have since sold most of their stake in the companies at very healthy profits, I know gov'ts typically screw up doing things like this, but this time they made plenty of money, you're wrong
  7. a TDI VW costs about $5000 more here in Canada, than a gas model, do the math and see how long it takes to make up that $5k in fuel savings
  8. EDIT: this is if you don't include this whole 'environmentally friendly' phase we're going through right now. I'm pretty sure this environmentally friendly phase is going to continue and even get more pronounced
  9. ends have met, they made billions last year
  10. this time of year, I always wish I had done more
  11. I thought it was an off the cuff reply, I just thought I would take it too far for some fun it's nice to know that you could take an early retirement from your 9-5, and make a few dollars guiding, writingand other fishing related stuff
  12. did you guys nail down Mike for any dates?
  13. I think alot of daily and possesion limits are too high, especially in some districts where there is alot of fishing pressure
  14. that's the nicest outhouse I've seen, great report, I'm living vicariously through Mike's eyes again, damn!
  15. yeah, it does seem pretty odd when someone is talking about brook trout as an invasive or nuisance species
  16. I have both a Calcutta (I always thought that was a dumb name for a reel) and a Curado, I prefer the Curado to my more expensive Calcutta, I've even abused the Curado for muskie fishing with heavy line and heavy baits and it's still my fav.
  17. totally agree with KF, if you go cheap on the reel, it will be a nightmare to use, my vote would be for the Shimano Curado, I've abused mine for almost 20 years and it still works great, my wife (never used a bait caster) tried it this summer and within 15 minutes was whipping casts around no problem
  18. that pike hold has become outdated, not long after the "fingers in the eye sockets" hold was not cool anymore
  19. Instead of spending money trying to rehabilitate something already messed up, I always think the money would be better spent preserving something still in a pristine, natural state. Another example would be the hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions, spent in Hamilton Harbour and Cootes Paradise, Lasalle and Pier 4 Park look just plain silly, the carp barrier was a failure and it's still just full of alewives, sheephead and carp.
  20. nice chinny, nice double gobies too!
  21. if Mike is guiding Gord and Miro, you guys have to do full reports with lots of pictures, I'm already looking forward to reading them. I'm sure Mike will get you guys into some awesome fish.
  22. if you've got a reel with a decent drag, there isn't alot of skill needed to land a big fish on light line
  23. do a search for outfitters in La Vérendrye park in Quebec, it fits your criteria for driving distance, and remoteness
  24. is this in a regular house or a mobile house? I opened up 2 supporting walls in my house with two 2x12's nailed together for headers, everythings fine, not that difficult a job remember, once the header is in, there is increased load on the studs holding the header and that load is transfered to whatever is below them (mine ended up on a jack post so I didn't do any extra work in the floor below)
  25. that's a nice looking blind, you could sit in there all day even in nasty weather
