  1. This one wasn't even "tenderized".... no damage to the body, and it expired very quickly... should make for good eating for sure. Burt
  2. Freak deer accident today. At around noon in Dundas a buck (8-pointer, looked to be about 280lbs, body was large compared to its rack) bolted across a fairly busy street. My neighbour saw it coming and was able to stop her Ford Focus and the buck jumped over her car, its rear hoof just clipping her passenger side windshield pillar. It then plowed straight into a heavy railing past the sidewalk (2" tubluar) with its chest and then fractured its skull on the sidewalk. Thankfully it expired in about 5 minutes. Looked like it must have done some severe internal damage as it bled out profusely and quickly. A hunter pulled up moments later (before the Police arrived) and said he would claim the buck. When the Police arrived, they said that really he couldn't take it, that it was the property of the Crown. He stated that animal control would take the carcass and dispose of it. He said that you would have to get permission from the MNR, but they would never give it. We reasoned with him that it was better to allow this gentleman to take the animal and put it to good use rather than let it go to waste. He then allowed him to take it. What is the law in this regard? Are you allowed to "claim" the animal or is this illegal? Burt
  3. If you want to use the gasser you will have to do it indirect (fish on one side, fire on the other) on the lowest setting. You can place a pan of water under the fish side for an added ballast which will resist temperature increases. Lots of recipies for brine on the net, pick one that looks interesting. I would suggest you save the hickory for pork or beef, and go with alder or apple.... much more mild and go much better with fish. You could also just plank it and grill it faster, that will give you a slightly smokey flavour as well. Burt
  4. I have no problem with anyone keeping their legal limit, as long as they will consume their catch, which you will do. Nice eater sized fish as well. One question: If by chance you did go out again and in Canadian waters and caught and kept another few salmonoids and the CO took a look in your freezer (EXTREMELY rare I think), how would you convince the CO that those fish were caught out of country? Are Lake Michigan fish are tattooed or branded lol???? Burt
  5. Do the Vectra SST bearing just drop out? What do you do with a reel that has pressed in bearings (ie: my Stanton)? I have heard that most times you damage the bearings trying to get them out, and need to install new ones... I use Militec-1 as a lube, works great..... Burt
  6. Where do you think all that "imitation crab" meat comes from anyway??? Yummy.... Burt
  7. The red or pink flesh comes from a diet rich in the pigment astaxanthin. Shrimp contain very high concentrations of astaxanthin. When they are raw, you generally cannot see it. It is covered by proteins which make the shells look dark. When you cook the shrimp, the proteins denature (break down) and allow the pigment to be visible; they turn pink. So when fish eat shrimp, they are ingesting a diet rich in astaxanthin, and it builds up in their flesh, giving it a pink or orange colour. Burt
  8. Two or three years back I bought a 5" Adcock Stanton for $125 shipped to my door from England, and also a JW Young Purist 2050 for $100 to the door, also from England. Both run excellent, and were fantastic deals.... just keep your eyes open and you can find some really great stuff for cheap.... Burt
  9. I started this post almost two years ago but it may be useful to you... http://www.ofncommunity.com/forums/index.p...79&hl=boots Burt
  10. If you have a Costco membership (or know someone who does) they usually carry the Wetskins brand as well. The price can't be beat, and the ones that they stock have more pockets than the ones at Canadian Tire. Colours are not yellow, usually grey and navy. Some have a removable fleece liner. Not breathable, but good none the less. Burt
  11. Sorry to derail, but this got me thinking about a video that someone posted on facebook..... its funny.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seGVhlUw6xg Burt
  12. Why did you have to mention that..... of course I had to click on it then...... Burt
  13. Yes, this is correct, but you did have more of a direct line to a Conservation Officer from what I understand. And I believe the training was on what the proper laws were and what pertinent information you needed to collect to support the CO's enforcement. Burt
  14. The MNR used to have a volunteer "policing" program but it was cancelled a few years ago. You had to take some courses and be "certified". It was cancelled because it was too popular and became uncontrollable (I was told this by a senior MNR employee when I tried to volunteer). Burt
  15. Not blaming it on people who do not speak English...... these clearly do and understand it fully.... typically it is the instant excuse some use. There are all races and ethnicities down there doing the same thing... I am not drawing the "race card".. meerly was recounting an event of the day... Burt
  16. Stopped by at around lunch time today to take a look at how many goons the rain brought out. Parking lot was packed, cars parked up the road into Petro Canada Park. Brutal was the carnage going on..... Females, males, a couple coho..... saw a guy pull one out (hooked in the belly) and it already had a hook in its back and one in the tail. When told he couldn't keep the fish, he of course took the "no speak English" excuse.... I said "Bull" and put my finger in my cheek like a hook and shook my head. He put it back. Called the MNR TIPS line and just made a general report on the whole area..... give it a couple of days and the stink of death will be thick!! Burt
  17. Sorry for your loss Joey.... My father was born in '35 as well and I am not (probably never will be) ready for him to leave me either. My families thoughts are with you. Burt
  18. If it is just algae then normally it is not a problem. Cyanobacteria is not algae, it is a bacteria. It has a blue/green colour because it respires via photosynthesis. The byproducts produced include toxic substances. Have battled it in the fish tanks before.... Burt
  19. This gent has the right idea.... You rented a piece of equipment from an establishment that was supposed to be in good working order. It wasn't. Thats their problem. If the motor blew or siezed, do you think the customer should be responsible? Stuff like this happens, thats why they charge so much to rent them, pays for the breakdowns too. If VISA doesn't work it out.... you will have to pay the bill.... but be sure to take that marina to small claims court and get your money back! Burt
  20. Why not Squeez Bacon ??? Burt
  21. I have used 1 to 1.5" tubes in white and pink for bows under a float with limited success. They definately have their place in the arsenal, although I prefer marabou bead head jigs myself. Burt
  22. Sorry for your loss Kyle. It is hard to loose a pet. I am in the same boat this week, I found my 9 1/2 year old senegal parrot, Petrie, on the bottom of his cage yesterday morning. Sucks! Burt
  23. Probably better that you suprise him in person and then remove the labels etc. and put them into a Dominican box or something else.... Burt

Excerpts from a Cat's Diary: Day 983 of my captivity. My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am. buggers. There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.. Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking... I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs. I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now.........
  25. Come on..... get some meat on there and take some pictures!! BBQ p o r n......... yummmm.... Burt
