Heading up to the Haliburton area in a couple of weeks to do some ice fishing. We stay in a house on Miskwabi Lake (about 10min east of Haliburton). We have only fished this lake in the area and have always only come up with a couple of small lakers (12-16"). Anyone have any suggestions on other bodies of water in the area that may be more productive? I think I want to try somewhere new this year. Thanks, Burt

Only just over a year late, but what the heck..... I recently picked up a pair of Baffin Titan's. I didn't even know they made insulated rubber boots like this!! Baffin Titan Fully moulded waterproof boot 1" snow cuff Minus 100°C/-148°F comfort rated inner boot system Aggressive, long wearing, self-cleaning outsole design Micro-cellular waffle foot bed traps air and moisture Full Sizes Only - 7 - 14 I found them on sale at TSC for $82.49 plus tax (regular $110). Get a pair before they sell out! I have not put them through an ice fishing excursion yet but the liner system is NICE! It consists of a thick layer of "Polymech" open cell foam, a layer of felt, and a couple layers of "vaporized aluminum membrane". The inner lining is velvety smooth and very comfortable. The liner literally wraps around and envelopes your feet. Rated to - 100°C/-148°F. The hight of the boot is 14". These should be unbeatable with there is a load of slush and water on the ice. Walking in these boots is not what you would expect. The heel and toe are angled somewhat to allow for a natural, smooth, rolling movement of the foot, very unlike the clunkiness of cheaper rubber felt packs. There is no comparing the Titans to the felt pack rubber boots available everywhere for ~$40, these are the real deal. Below is a pic of the boots, one of the liners pulled out, and the waffle foot bed that is positioned between the liner and the sole of the boot. Burt

Like most I very much want GSP to win, but...... Penn has some very good head movement when boxing, he rarely gets hit, and has a good chin. Problem is he really is a brutally dominant lightweight, and his frame doesn't take to 170lbs as well as St. Pierre. I also think (now this is from the propaganda that has been televised) that Penn wants this fight more than GSP (let the barrage of comments begin lol). I think that it will be Penn in the third, by rear naked choke..... Burt

Bravo to you Mr. MacNair for releasing that fish, and an absolutely fantastic fish it was!!!! The memories of the fight will last forever and hopefully the next person to land that fish gives it the respect that you did.... Burt

On the ice, it has to be beer..... Bitburger is the fav.... of course only if I am not the driver.... Burt

As a parallel to WalleyeMaster's thread "Favorite drink" I thought I would ask what is your favorite food to prepare while icefishing.... I am heading out tomorrow with a friend, what should I cook on the one-burner for lunch???? Burt

Nice reel but ~6.5oz, 184g.... Burt

I bought my 12 year old daughter a 5.5 foot Ugly Stick Light and a Daiwa Crossfire 3i reel in the 1500 (http://www.lebaron.ca/pdf_files_sp09/fishi...a_hardbodyz.pdf) size a couple years ago for her first spinning combo. It is light and short enough for her to use effectively. Burt

Waterwolf, thanks for the PM The quick strike rigs I made up form SS braid, the hooks are in line. This will cause the bait to be vertical. How should I make a rig so the bait hangs horizontal? Thanks, Burt

Going fishing for pike this weekend. Tied up some quick strike rigs, just need some bait. I checked the local (West Hamilton and Dundas) Fortinos and Metro for sardines etc. but all I find are smaller smelts or silversides with the heads off. Fortinos did have whiting but they were really large (12"). Is the head needed with a dead bait or is it OK to use headless and gutted fish? Burt

Normark Swedebore 4, 6, 8" ice augers on sale at Canadian Tire (ends tomorrow), $55, regular $70..... Burt

It has two zip windows and a small velcro roof vent. Don't know if the windows actually open though, never looked. The real test will be up in Haliburton in February with 25MPH winds... Burt

This is true. We drove through Hortons on the way and picked up sprinkle donuts and Timbits, when I was baiting up their jigs I am pretty sure I dropped a spike into the Timbit box, but I didn't tell them till we were home, why spoil thier fun lol.... Burt

Took the kids to Pinehurst today for the first ice fishing outing of the season. Tried out the new Ice Cube that I just picked up as well. A lot of slush on top of the ice. Not an issue to me with the big boots but surely an issue for the kids felt packs as the rubber bottoms aren't as tall as mine! We found a relatively dry area and shoveled it clean. Set up the Ice Cube and drilled some holes inside. Immediately about 2" of water engulfed the hut lol.... This is definitely a problem with no floor. Stayed for an hour and a bit and called it a day with no fish and the kids with soaked feet. They were beating on each other as well so I had had enough!!!! Better luck next time (I hope)!!!!! Burt

Now that I think about it I usually say "yeehaa" or "oh baby" lol.... Burt

Taking the kids to Pinehurst tomorrow morning but didn't get a chance to pick up some maggots. Is there a bait shop in Paris that stocks them? Google points me to "Big Catch Fishing & Archery" as the only bait shop, can anyone confirm if they have them? Thanks, Burt

Seeing this sale got me initially worried as I just bought the Eastman IceCube 4 man from Fishing World this week. I got it for $250 plus taxes. Regular price for the SubZero cube is $300, so with the sale it is now $240, not worth switching for $10 less.... Burt

Awesome fish Ciceri!! How did the new cube work out? Burt
-
I just bought a Mr. Heater Buddy today as well so I will see how this does in it.... I may get a piece of astroturf to put on the ice if it is a problem when bare. Burt
-
Picked up the 4 man Ice Cube today. Have to give it a practice assembly this week and take the kids out this weekend. Nice thing it will fit easily in the car as well. Thanks guys... Burt
-
It will be for myself and a friend, or for when I take my 3 kids out, they can spend time inside warming up while I brave the elements lol... Lots of positive words on the Cube, this may be more suited for the kids as well, and I do fish a Haliburton lake that is always over a foot of snow on it, this would eliminate the need to pull a sled. If the material etc. looks not too bad I may try this one. Thanks for all the suggestions so far!!! Burt

I will check out the Fish Trap Guide and the Ice - Cube, I think LeBaron and BassPro have the Fish Trap, who has an Ice - Cube to look at? Burt

I am looking for a 2 to 3 man ice fishing shelter. I need one that I can fit in the back of the minivan, one that I can pull out on the ice under human power (sled bottom?), one that is easy to set up in the wind, durable, etc. etc.... I generally fish small bodies of water, and don't travel too far. Does not need to be cheap, but needs to be a good value for the $$... Best place to purchase one? Feel free to suggest models that I should stay away from also! Thanks, Burt

(NF) Whats everyone preparing for New Years Eve dinner?
Burtess posted a topic in General Discussion
For those that are staying in tonight, what are you preparing for New Years Eve dinner? For a lot the tradition would be lobster and steak, but I am deathly allergic to shrimp, lobsters, and the like. We are having our good neighbours over and I am preparing grilled beef tenderloin, baked potato, and butternut squash.... What's everybody else having???? Burt
