haha he tried to pitch that one on us 2 years running. My friend took the bait, but we didn't catch anything on them. Stuck to our typical bottom bouncing technique and landed a few beauties. We've always gone the weekend following the opener. Less crouded, and I think the owners feel less stressed so they are very nice and friendly. Fishing has been good, but not great. Never stayed in a trailer, they do look kinda old but have heard they are nice from other guests. They won't let you launch your own boat, the guy has a nifty little atv mount that he loves playing with, but he gets the boat in quick and easy for you. The docks are in a bit of a state, certainly wouldn't want to jump on them, but they serve the purpose. The fish cleaning station is well organized and away from the campsites. All in all I've been happy with Fosters in the 2 years I've gone, and would go back again. I wouldn't recommend going on a busy weekend as I could imagine the site would be like a tailgate party, not a lot of privacy or room, but other wise it is ok. Let us know where you go and how the trip/fishing was!

Great job getting things back up and running. I'm sure there were a few , stressful moments and lots of hard work on your part. I hope you know that it does not go unnoticed. Thanks again!

thanks for sharing that, since I don't have cable, or satellite, I'm always looking for online shows. -
Interesting observation. The lake in town here is stocked every 3 years. I've been asking around to see if there are naturally reproducing fish as well, or if the population is completely introduced. With that said, I'm not sure if brookies are natural up here, I haven't heard of any other lakes that hold them. I did, reluctantly keep this fish. Had I known she was a breeder it would have gone back for sure. I kinda wanted to see if she had eggs starting to develop, but there was nothing (looking for any sign that they may be breeding). felt kinda bad about keeping her, but she tasted awfully good.

Great report. I wish I could get out as often as you do, and target such a wide variety of fish. That mount is also a beauty.... actual fish or replica?

Only watch the one that was posted, but there ought to be some repercussions, someone should drop of a copy of the regs at their hut sometime.

Well headed out again this weekend. Have been skunked the past few times out, and things didn't change on saturday. Headed up to the north end of Dease Lake to try for some lakers or whities. Kalvin had one on momentarily but reel problems saw the fish lost after only a few seconds. Sunday we decided to head back over to Allan Lake for some Brook trout. The day started off kinda slow, we each hit a nice sized eater at our usual spot, but after about an hour decided to move. Tried out a shallow bay which I hear held fish, no luck there. Off in the distance we could see a narrowing in the lake, where 2 merging points left about a 15 foot gap. Kalvin set up on the close side while I ventured through the narrows. was in about 10fow with some short little weeds (still green) on bottom. It didn't take long before I felt a tug and the fight was on. Felt big right away, but didn't put up much of a fight until it saw the hole. All I saw was a flash of spots then my drag started to peel. After a nice little fight I landed this fat 23.5" estimated the weight to be around the 5lb mark, she was fat. Shortly after I manage one more smaller one then called it a day. Kalvin hit 1 more as I was walking out. We went 5/6 with Kalvin losing one right at the hole. 4/5 were caught on spoons tipped with bacon, while the 5th was a small panfish jig with a berkley trout worm.

Great report and great catch. Thanks for sharing that, always great to hear these incredible stories.

Great report! thank you for sharing. That weather looks insane, and you guys must be a little on the crazy side to venture out, but looks like it paid off. Stay safe!

Great work! sounds like an incredible day! Way to go team 3!

Thanks for the advice... as for the cradle, I was thinking it would be a 2 person job, and not necessarily always being used from a canoe. I just like the idea of keeping the fish horizontal in the water, with little strain on its body. Not to mention easier to measure. I agree things could be a little sketchy using one from a canoe, but as long as you have some good communication/cooperation with your fishing partner things should work ok. As for the baitcaster, I appreciate the advice, some of you have mirrored my concerns, and perhaps I will stick with another spinning outfit. I really would like to get the reel I have now working, it is really frustrating, because I know it's a quality rod/reel combo, I'm just not seeing it. thanks again for the advice!

now why couldn't I find those on the lebaron site??? hmmm The reel is a shimano Beastmaster... very similar to this one... beastmaster I had it cleaned and re-greased in the spring because I also though that was the problem. made no improvements. It may just be because I don't know how to use it, but I've gone out practicing with a 1.5oz weight attached and I honestly can't cast more than 10-15 feet. The spool just seems to have way too much resistance. I've played with all the settings, but there is very little improvement.

First I'll start with the easier of the two... I think I want to buy a landing cradle, as a lot of my fishing up here will be out of a canoe (hopefully targeting big pike) and I think a cradle would be easier to bushwack with than a full sized net. Anyways I've looked online at BPS, Cabelas. Lebarons, Canadian tire and wallmart and haven't found any for sale. Does anyone know where I could order one online? Secondly, all I have at the moment is a 6'6" medium action spinning outfit. It has worked great for me down south for walleye, bass and small to midsized pike. Up here I think I'll be getting into some bigger fish, so I think I need to beef things up a bit. With that in mind Im looking for some suggestions for a rod/reel that will suite my needs. If I can find something that will work, I'd love it to be a multi-purpose set up, where I could possibly use for steelhead/salmon in the rivers as well, and possibly even trolling for lakers. Never really used a baitcasting reel. Have an older one at home that I can't figure out for the life of me, so I'm a little worried about that, but really am open to anything. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! and of course price is a factor, looking at maybe $150 for the combo as my ceiling price. thanks Andre

Great report! I love that net! Looks like you got into some nice chrome there too!

Awesome laker! Looking to get into some of those today. I don't think there is anything wrong with holding the camera close to the fish. After all you are trying to take a great picture of your incredible catch. That means getting the camera in tight to pick up all the variations in the colouring, and so what if you make it look bigger in the process. Professional photographers wait for the right light/perfect poses and conditions to take the perfect shot so why can't we?

The state of the Maple Leafs has been a bit of a joke for quite a while now. Fortunately it does seem like we are finally making a bit of progress. Sure many don't like Burke, but he is a proven hockey mind, and a no nonsense guy. He is aware of what needs to be done, and that means we will get worse (or at least not any better) for probably a couple years yet. Of course in the sports business there are no guarantees, but at least its something new, a different approach. As for ticket prices, they are getting out of hand. Especially in Toronto. I find if very sad when watching games to see very few jerseys in the lower bowl, with the exception of a few brand new sparkly ones bought right before the game. The true fans just can't afford it anymore in Toronto. I've been to many NHL games in Ottawa, Montreal, Detroit and Vancouver, but only one in TO and thats when a ticket was given to me. Furthermore I payed $9 a seat for games in Detroit last year (only a 4 hour drive from TO) and the games featured some high quality opponents in the ducks and Sharks. As for Holdfast, your arguments really don't hold all that much wieght. Sure the Western conference may have more "total" wins that the East, but that could easily mean the talent in the Eastern conference is more evenly distributed. The West also has its share of push-over opponents like Nashville, Phoenix, St. Louis, and Colorado. As for the Olympic team, I don't think anyone considered Carey Price to rival Luongo for the starting goalie spot, or even Brodeur or Turco for the backup(or maybe Thomas but I doubt it with his age and lack of experience). I do however see a very realistic possibility of him making the team as the 3rd goalie, depending on how he, and some of the other young goalies play down the stretch. You also fail to consider all the other Olympic teams that will be competing when you analyse the talent on Montreal. They actually have 8 players who will certainly warrant consideration from their home countries. Halak, Hamrlik, Lang, Pleckanec - Czech Kovalev, Markov - Russia Koivu - Finland Schneider - USA and you may even consider Tanguay for team Canada, but I doubt it and would be dissapointed to see him there and not a younger star. -
Not a hunter yet, but am working on it. Hopefully I'll have everything ready for the fall, and with any luck will be able to drop a moose, caribou or goat. Will also get my black bear tag just in case of an aggressive encounter and may put in for grizzly for the same reason, but less likely. Great tom there, would love to hunt those if/when I move back to that area.

Having grown up in the city I must admit I lack practice in many of the skills needed to create a little homestead and survive in the bush. This is however a bit if a dream for me. As long as I can remember I've been heading on hikes, observing wildlife, fishing, and since i was old enough to head out on my own I've been back country camping. I know its no substitute for experience, but I've read countless books on survival and living off the land, it certainly is no cake walk, and you need to be prepared. I feel as though I could make do. It would take a lot of effort and hard work, but as long as you prioritize, improvise and make wise decisions you should have a decent shot at it (provided you have a little bush sense) As for the survivorman vs bear grylis vs Ray Mears.... I agree that Ray Mears is great, but I also think Les Stroud is as well. Bear's show is a joke. He certainly has the skills and has the accomplishments to prove it, but his show demonstrates way too many high risk tasks when in survival situations. (plus go to youtube and search for bear grylis is a fraud and you will see). as for survivorman, I always kinda wondered about his lack of food as well, but after having recently read his book I understand. He firmly believes that many people place way too much importance on food during the first portions of survival. He knows he can survive for several weeks without food, so he simply does not make it a priority since he knows he will only be there for a week. granted he knows he needs some energy for building/travelling, but in general finding food is lower on his priority list than non-experts might think it should be. Also if you can find it watch the film Alone in the Wilderness. story about a fellow who built a cabin and lived off the land in alaska for the better part of 30 years. Only decided to leave when the winters were too hard on his 82 year old body. Incredible craftmanship in his cabin.

I've hit the big prize on nevada tickets a few times, I think the biggest was $250, but I don't really buy them often and never more than $2-3 worth at a time. Guess I've been kinda lucky with those. A fellow that my father worked with won a big amount a number of years ago. I can't remember the exact figure but I think it was in the 2 mil range.

interesting... would love to give them a try.

Nice looking fish! Hopefully in March I'll be able to make my way south for something similar! -
Never done it myself, but a couple of years ago saw a guy catching large spring panfish one after another using perch eyeballs. Meanwhile my friend and I went home with maybe a dozen dinks in a couple hours using micro tubes.
