Know your collision rules and use them, if you are to give way do it early so you can leave lots of room. If you are to stand on, do so up to the point where you have to decide if the other guy knows what he's doing and if its questionable give way before there's a problem. The trick to fishing in packs is to make your moves obvios and early , make room for the other guy if its getting tight if you can and be awair of all the boats in the area.

Things people don't know about the highway traffic act

If you use hand signals you can rest assured that the guy that just killled you was friendly and waving back. Extended left arm does not mean "please pass me" -
What is the maximum allowable length of a dock?
POLLIWOGG replied to jonnybass's topic in General Discussion
From what I could Google, Depends on the size of the water covered and if it floats or is suported. suported docks over 15 sq meters require a permit. -
for the people that didn't get their operator cards yet...
POLLIWOGG replied to BFSC Kevin's topic in General Discussion
Our lovely gov. doesn't get any $ from operators cards. Its against the rules to write the test at home, it looks like they're trying for one last kick at the can before they shut down. Some of these outfits kept records and some don't so make lots of copies of your card. -
try google them?

With all the new line being different dia. your best of to check the label of the line your considering using.

www.cps-ecp.ca I was looking for a coarse break down on the site but its not very detailed. From my old coarse book, its changed a bit since. sections broken into smaller sections 1. Vessel Identification 2. Power boat handling 13 sections .. 3. sailboat handling 9 sections 4. Gov. Regs 11 sections collision regs (you get the book) equipment lights , steering rules ...etc 5. charts 11 sections 6. aids to navigation 5 sections buoys , lights.... 7. elementary plotting and calculations 14 sections 8. compass 9 sections Know how to swing your compass? 9. bearings 10 sections if you don't know what collision bearings are you should take this coarse. 10 fixes 8 sections 11. seamanship and emergencies 11 sections PFDs , hypothermia, fire, refuelling.... 12 . safety 7 sections towing a vessel, trailering , canoeing, electrical hazards... 13. lines 6 sections about ropes 14 canals and tides 15. anchoring 10 sections how they work, how to make them work better. 16 weather 10 sections 17 manners and customs This generally takes 12 nights at one or two nights a week and its not that easy, you'll learn something and you can advance all the way to celestial navigation if you need a challenge. Cost may vary due to cost of renting a room usually around $180.. I took the basic boating coarse when I started salmon fishing in large packs of boats that had some ridiculous ideas about right of way, so I wanted to do it right. I followed up with marine maintenance, piloting, VHF, weather, instructors and a boat courtesy check coarse. Taking the courses is a lot of fun and your local squadron can be whatever the members make it, some are very active and some could be. The weather course is fantastic, well worth every penny, we had an instructor from CFB Trenton and he was great. I would never join a club that would have me as a member! well I broke the rule.... You won't get a discount with the pcoc card because everybody needs one and they practically hand them out. To get a discount you will have to do the CPS or equivalent of the basic boating coarse and thats usually 12 nights at 4hrs. a night and a really nice exam at the end with a pass rate of 25%. It used to be 80% but they wimped it down to gov. standards. It used to be that you couldn't be a member without that coarse but now you can get an associate membership with the CPS Boat Pro (pcoc) coarse. Thats 8 hrs. and 50 question test for a pcoc thats good in Ca. and US. If you can weasel a discount with the 8hr coarse, good luck but I doubt it. You might get more discounts with each additional advanced coarse as well especially with the CPS insurer we have for our members. They should have a list of discounts available for having sonar, radar , alarm system........

I got to save that for the boating coarse.

Its against the law to take a fish by hand, I'm surprised that everyone here doesn't know that. Having said that, if you loose a walleye at the ice 9 times out of 10 you can reach in and grab it.

I was told they are holding the water back to work on the dams, you might want to call whatever authorities maybe they can help you out. If your the lowest house and they are holding the water back I would think they would want to hear from you.

What have you got thats a permetherin base, most home bug sprays or even a hornet spray should do but the hornet spray might be a little strong and burn the plant. I think you can mix baking soda and water for a fungicide. I can mix you up a hundred gal. of bug killer but when it comes to a cup full I'm sorta lost.

Somewhere there is a list of accredited suppliers, some of them have a registry but some don't. You might be able to make your own card but can you do it for $20 and why take the chance.
-
Just last week I said copy your cards because there is no registry. These cards are not a license and have nothing to do with the gov. The test was supposed to be offered to experienced boaters only, everybody else was to take a course. The idea was to get people into courses, instead they simply purchased the card of the net or took a 2hr course that tought the test. The CPS gives an 8 hrs instruction and 50 question test and a registered card that is good for Ca. and US. way more than what most offer for more money but when they find out its only 2hr for some mickey mouse outfit teaching the test thats where they go. Its obvious that the integrity of the card has corroded to the point where it should be trashed.

Take the motor off the boat and buy it separate, as far as I know there is no tax on the private sale of a used motor, is there?

I haven't read all the posts so maybe someone has already come up with this. I propose that next year instead of saving an average of 10cents worth of electricity and driving 20 miles or so to a bon fire or whatever party to celebrate saving the said electricity that next year everyone turn on a light and stand under it for an hour and don't move. If you look at the environmental foot print of earth day I suspect it was a disaster because we made a party out of it..

There are so many out on this that it makes it almost optional. It would be impractical to mount one put keep in mind that you can make one out of tin foil and get it as high as you can.

Would you like to have your boat safety inspected?
POLLIWOGG replied to Big Cliff's topic in General Discussion
The idea was to be able to have your boat inspected under more leisure terms than on the water by a cop. The inspection sort of goes like.... must have......should have... could have. You have to pass the must have to get the sticker. If you can't get to Cliffs contact your local power squadron and they will set it up. Anybody in Prince Edward County wants it done let me know and I'll set it up we have 2 guys that can do it and 2 that could re qualify to do them. -
Kickingfrog...if you took those courses with cps they will give you a card if you rejoin. The problem with an on water course and test is how do you do it cheap and not involve a gov. agency because they don't want anything to do with it. An on water test through coast guard or trans ca would compare with getting a motorcycle license and whats that cost around $500? You think $30 is a cash grab. They didn't go after pwc because the #2 killer is the small tinners that a lot of us use, #1 is canoes. The big problem with the boat test is it draws people away from a decent boating course. Guessing your way through a test doesn't help much on the water. I know some who have never been in a boat that passed the test. It is possible that the whole thing may collapse yet due to noncompliance.

Transport Ca. test protocols as of Jan forbid testing in the home of the writer. IT looks like trans ca. isn't enforcing the new rules any better than they did the old rules, writing online has been questionable from the start. Or maybe they're telling us one thing and others something else. I used to test anywhere too, some of the new protocols are going to be tough, like isolating a test area at a trade show so that the writer can see no other activity other than out a window.
-
As far as we could figure it out , to write the test on a computer you must be in a classroom or where the test provider has control. Writing at home googling the answer in another window under the supervision of a goldfish is over. I'm not saying everybody cheated the online test but a lot did.

AS of Jan 7 2008 REGARDLESS OF THE TEST FORMAT, NO TEST CAN BE ADMINISTERED IN THE CANDIDATE’S PRIVATE RESIDENCE. The test site must be owned, leased, occupies, or otherwise controlled by the course provider but that is in no way under the control of a candidate taking a test. There must be no consumption of alcoholic beverages at the test site. All candidates must verify that they have not written a test within the last 24 hours. There is some stuff on ID's and a whole bunch of other stuff but you get the picture.

Eye tracker , I'm guessing that Cliff is talking about the pleasure Craft check, I couldn't know for sure. Have they got after you for a commercial craft operators card yet, last I heard they were waiting for the RCMP to build some boats(don't ask) and get the cops to get them before everybody else. -

Wrong one Eye tracker, thats non pleasure craft. You want Pleasure Craft Courtesy Checks, http://www.cps-ecp.ca/public.asp?WCE=A=Bod...224481|K=224481 You can get a courtesy check from your local power squadron. http://www.cps-ecp.ca I took the coarse for doing them but by the time they got done jerking us around with 2 police checks it had gotten into the summer and I was too busy with the farm to do them.
