the amount of places with incredible fishing literally within 20 minutes of barrie is a joke. I have no idea what the heck they are thinking. Its as if they think people wont spend the $30 to just drive to port severn...and be on a nicer lake anyways lol. I even know of a place right off the highway on the water that you can park for free if you are only launching a kayak.

Lmao and this is why I don’t fish simcoe. The 30 dollar sky dome air canada centre parking in innisfil was enough of a joke to make me never want to go back.

Can braided line be 'aged' in any way?
AKRISONER replied to Dave Bailey's topic in Non-Outdoors Open Discussion
I don’t know, I’ve been using power pro for years 20lb and have never had any complaints. It definitely will wear out after a year or so but it tells you it’s time to respool when the line gets frayed. some guys swear by j braid, it’s expensive as hell though. I personally find that nanofil has too much line twist and sometimes acts too much like mono or fluro. I like it on really light rigs for crappie and ice fishing because it’s ice build up resistant but much prefer braid when doing heavier fishing for big smallmouth or pike etc. classic powerpro is tried true and tested for a reason, just need to respool a little more often. The nice thing is they usually If you wanna save a buck you can unspool and then respool it on backwards. -
where did you source em Bill?

personally id run a 55 lb in that boat. The weight of the extra battery from a 24 volt would be really noticeable in that tinner with a 50...thats just my take on it. I run a 18 foot glass boat and a 80lb is a lot of power in a boat that heavy. Electronics, I personally think that a helix 7 is your best bang for buck graph/sonar on the market. It also doubles as an ice fishing flasher and draws very little power. Side imaging will cost you a bit more dough, but if you like trolling around and driving, watching whats on either side of your boat is pretty powerful stuff. You may see a rock pile or other structure out in 20 fow 75 yards off to your port side, throw a mark on it and go drive over that spot and notice that its stacked with fish. Down imaging is incredible for showing things that 2d sonar cant I specifically bait, and will help you distinguish between whats weeds, wood, rock or other junk down there that simply shows up as blob.

im not sure why they would tell you that. My dads been running a 858hdc for years and never had an issue running the 2d sonar at speed. Now there is definitely something specifically called a "high speed transducer" that guys will mount through hull etc etc. But to me thats if you really really need a perfect image while travelling at speed. Once again in my experience the only thing you wont be able to get a reading on at speed is your down and side image. They also dont like too deep of water either but thats an entirely different story. -
River was active this morning Finally and done

i personally use the loon oil, its pretty darn good. A drop every 20 casts or so. Keeps the flies dry to. You can blow the excess water off and keep it floating. Seems to not allow them to get saturated. -

You aren’t going to read side image or down image with much detail going that fast if at all. But that’s not what those views are for anyways at that speed. the 2d works totally fine at high speed. Once you start going 50mph I find mine starts dropping out though but that’s also the way my deucer is mounted. also if you are hoping to go 40+mph consider buying the metal deucer mount off of the helix 10’s and 12’s the plastic one they gave me with the 7 couldn’t hold up to the speed especially once I was running chop. I swapped to the metal bracket and haven’t had a problem since -

Trust me, the only “new” things in my boat are the seats, the tie off ropes and the batteries lol. I shop the American market hard for used gear, it’s the only way I can afford to make it happen. If you can believe it I outfit the boat with electronics (doesn’t include the re-wiring) for in and around $1,600 canadian spaced out over 3 years and that included two ice fishing transdeucers as add ins for the helix 7’s so I can ice fish with them! our dollar now makes that far tougher to pull off! we could go for a fish sometime once covid is over with. I already know we have something in common to talk about lol -

Just speaking from experience, I ran two helix 7’s a helix 9, two livewells and started and stopped my main motor 10 times on a group 24 for 9 hours yesterday without issue. -
topwater at low light jig with a craw pattern or an 8 foot diving crankbait during the daytime. Smallies are easy this time of year.

i run one of these units myself. Nice little bonus on the networking capability of this one too. Really fantastic imaging at a budget price! These definitely double up as an ice fishing flasher. I personally own 2 helix 7's for this reason! A digital flasher/graph, with GPS capabilities...for that price! Also these units have a built in "ice fishing mode" that reduces battery consumption! -
Love love love me an offshore boat. If I was more of an open water guy that’s what I would buy too!

I’m running a 22 year old Yamaha...thing starts like it’s new, doesn’t really put out much smoke for a two stroke and hasn’t given me a single issue and I definitely run it close to 100 hours a year. I also have an 88 suzuki that runs and has been abused horribly over the years lol. The original oil pump still works I don’t even have to run mix in it. previous owner told me the only thing ever done on it was the valve cover gasket. Aside from that it’s oem. I changed the impeller in it when I bought it. That’s it.

Depending on the era totally changes your options. If it’s pre-2001 two Stroke Yamaha four strokes in the 2000’s there’s a million Mercury’s out there kicking around. Those four stroke are bulletproof from my experience. 2010-2018 four stroke anything japanese. Too much power for you but those Honda Civic outboards are insanely reliable

A simple defense of “I was confused with the constantly changing laws that are literally changing day to day” would be an easy enough defense. we’ve talked about this at my work which is operated under environmental regulation. Covid has basically thrown a stick in the spokes of everything. We basically can’t do anything compliance wise because everyone’s situation is so unique and there is not way that we can expect everyone to keep up to date with the constantly changing rules. this is just my opinion. And once again not worth it unless you really got hammered with a fine over something so ridiculous.
-
if you got ticketed due to a Covid restriction, make sure you fight it in court if its worth your time. None of this stuff will actually ever hold up in court. I 100% understand the reasoning behind many of these rules, but they are intended as a deterrent..by definition they almost all violate the charter of rights and freedoms in Canada. If its $30 whatever, if its hundreds like ive heard Id be fighting it.

Finally, we get to share a bit of family time
AKRISONER replied to misfish's topic in Non-Outdoors Open Discussion
I got to see my nephew and niece for the first time since Christmas this weekend. My 7 year old nephew wanted to trampoline, then basketball then take me down to the forest to see his fort, then play hockey then play basketball...I’m tired lol -
We will be crying for that cool weather come later this week. Bass opener is going to be a scorcher. I’m shaving the quarantine beard for it, no way In hell in wearing the sun buff with this big of facial hair lol

In my personal experience, I saved myself a hell of a lot of time and effort by just swapping the entire hub as a kit rather than doing the seals and bearings. I think I paid an extra $50? replacing the races with a race punch is a total PITA. Cracked one of my hubs one time trying to replace one. Said forget it forked over the little bit extra and it’s like plug and play, the races are all ready in when you buy the hub you drop the bearing in and put it on the spindle done deal.

That is what I’m curious about my guess is that the province is in so much debt that changing the fishing regulations isn’t a top priority. I always thought that at some point the guys would figure out which slot system worked best and would implement it across the board
-
Lol I’d let someone try and find you. I’m sure if you ran into anyone you could explain your mistake and be on your way.

Gord Pyzer spoke to this during his recent video podcast with the gents from fishn canada. i specifically asked about why fmz 14 had different regs than the kawarthas with an even stranger “closed” middle slot <16 >22 slot limit for walleye. What Gord explained was that the original concept for the “one over” keeper idea was to allow people who had caught a fish of a lifetime to be able to keep the fish in order to get a mount made. He indicated it was the exact same train of thought as the musky over keeper size. He then explained in hind sight it was in error and that if we truly care about our walleye populations people need to stop targeting over fish for consumption. You will even hear folks up in pointe au baril talking And celebrating about getting an over to keep. He explained that contrary to what some falsely believe, the best breeding fish are the largest. They have the biggest eggs and best genetics and therefore their populations should be protected. Gord also mentioned that there are very very few if any actual healthy self sustaining walleye populations in Ontario. As he indicated “stocking” is a reflection of failure of the fisheries management system. He truly believes that with better regulations the need for stocking walleye could be removed through some common sense approaches. i know my family has now vowed to never keep any over fish again in accordance with Gord’s advice and hopefully some others will follow suit. I’m not certain what it would take for the fishing regulations to change? But perhaps after 15 something + years a revision could be considered? i just know that when it was explained directly from the God himself’s mouth, that was enough to change my mind forever

That run down highway 144 from Timmins through gogama to Sudbury had me crying when I did it. I was on the work clock so no time to stop and throw a cast. It’d be cool to even tow a small aluminum fishing boat and just drop into lakes for a week to see what’s happening. Maybe some day would need to bring a boat load of fuel though, only gas at one station during that 3 and a half hour drive
-
you can bare to wait the extra week! You're nuts Bill! Tradition for me, but a little different due to covid. We have a family and friends derby on the tri lakes I do that for the weekend and then the following weekend I take the entire week off and crush G bay for a week straight. The fishing is quite literally world class in every sense of the word. You want to throw the lure, you will get bit with size. Large or smallmouth, its going off! Might be a little different this year than the past few with opener being a week later, its crazy to watch the transition happen during opener week from basically freshly off the bed but still shallow to post spawn. Top water smallmouth in <4fow. oh budddyy
