  1. The only subscription I have is Ontario Out of Doors (because it comes with my OFAH membership) . I do however read, Musky Hunter, In Fishermen, Outdoor Canada, Essox, pretty much every one out there. One of my favorites is Bassin'. It's the cheapest of them all and has a ton of reading info, as opposed to just advertisments. The only downfall of it is it is gear for the southern states, but I have been able to adapt those techniques here really well.
  2. Signs won't make any difference. There might even be signs up in the area she was in? People will only see them when they "want" to. If she had lived there for three years, I honestly cannot believe she did not know about this hazzard. I have seen people go around these warnings and not even notice. It's just something for "the other person not me" Look at how many people go through stop signs. Move the "please wait to be seated" sign at a restaurant and seat themselves. People have to learn to think for themselves and be responsible instead of passing the buck. Just because some other idiot is out there in a truck doesn't mean you don't have to check conditions for yourself.
  3. Hi Fishguy, Congrats on the hunt. I have had a few friends go to Pirates Cove Marina in Kemptville and have great service and find the boat they were after. As well as St. Lawrence Marina in Prescott. Look at what your main purpose of the boat is going to be for. Big water or small lakes? You already have the people narrowed down so helps with size. I opted to go with Aluminum for my first boat for the simple reason that it wouldn't hurt as much when I scratch it. It also gets used up north where is gets beached on the shore, not something I want to do to a glass boat. Take in consideration where and what you will be towing with. Meaning, make sure your vehicle can handle it. If you have a chance, get 4-5 people on the boat and mimic casting and moving around to make sure that there is enough room.
  4. I've always been told about this place. It's on the way from my wife's parents place to her brothers. Last year we took a drive by, but Elvis wasn't up yet.
  5. I was hoping to go to this, but as of 9:00 this morning a kid who ran a stop sign and totaled my truck has changed my plans. I was so looking forward to going to this then BPS the next day. I have never been to either. I'm sure it won't take long for them to be scooped.
  6. I hope all is ok with everyone. These services are so critical. It sure does make my bad day not look so bad. Even though I was involed in an accident this morning and my truck is totaled. At least no one was injured in my case.
  7. I never really kept track. I was pretty solid though. Almost every night after work and Sundays. I would say at least 150 last year. Mind you some times I would only be out for a couple of hours and then others I would be out for 12 hours. The beauty of living on the water with the boat ready to go within 5 minutes. I did manage to get out in the boat Mid January once. Sadly there is now ice all around it so I have to wait till spring. With the conditions around here, I'm not sure if I will get out to ice fish.
  8. Wow. My boat that is 20 years older and a lot less power/toys cost more than that. It's deals like these that make me wonder how long this thing sat at the bottom of a lake? If you can see it in person and it is what it says, my guess is that it is already sold.
  9. Ya it's a boat. Sounds like you are unsure of it though. There are a lot of boats going around right now. I would personally wait to get what you want instead of settling. Down the road you will wish you had more power, more boat. If the carpet needs replaced, there could be other stuff too? Just as a reference. I got my boat last year, Lowe 170 (modified jon boat) with a 50 'rude for $5000.00.
  10. Way to go Cliff! Didn't know what T.J. was rambling on about, then it hit me, LOL. Congratulations to everyone who won.
  11. You are a cruel dad Cliff. Making her clean all that snow with a Pooh shovel She'll be at it for days. Ironically she looks like she's about to pounce like Tigger in the second picture. We're still getting it here. Nothing like snow to bring the kid out in ya!!!
  12. When will we see a version of the GRAVE DIGGER MONSTER BOAT enter the water to CRUSH those fish? That's on the Wild TV network. A couple of "guys" from down south fishing with their compund bows. They don't have any clue how to handle a fish if/when they get one in the boat that has been speared. They injured more than anything. I cannot remember the name of the show, but it was really disappointing that they aired it. That and the personal protection program. What the beep does the public need to know about how to go into a bar and shoot the place up?
  13. Two words for everyone here that speeds in excess "SLOW THE FIRETRUCK DOWN" There is no reason to go that fast. Yes everyone speeds, but there is a point where it is stupid. There is nothing worth doing it for. Speed kills!!! Trust me I know first hand. Also clean your vehicle fully. This includes all windows the lights and roof. No ones life is worth less than five minutes of your time. My rant for the day. Time for a coffee.
  14. What I hate even more than that is the commercials on WFN that make you jump out of the couch it's so loud. A lot of times I will turn the sound right down and just watch the show and not really hear what they are saying. Puts me in a peaceful hibernation mode so I can think about which spot I am going to hit first in May. Oh so far away.
  15. Looks like Lew beat me. Sounds like the same show, and yes it is interesting.
  16. Yup it's true. Saw an episode of it on Discovery channel for the "iceway" up north. It's the only road in the winter and transports use it all the time. They have very strict speeds for this as the waves do happen and weaken the ice, especially near the shore where it can pop. Not very smart of the people in the vehicle. They probably had too much to drink as well. They should repect all people on the ice and slow down.
  17. I don't think our groundhog could make an appearance if he tried. He's buried under a foot of wet heavy snow from yesterdays storm.
  18. I've only car camped there once so I can't really comment on what is better. It's pretty much a big trailer park style campground. I would say get a site close to the washrooms/showers, but in in the route of everyone else. During the time you are planning to go, it will probably be packed with people. Close to the water is nice too. If you are able to bring your bikes to get around the grounds that would make life easier. You are not aloud to bike on the trails though. The big hiking trail is great. It has a few boardwalks and bridges over a bay that is nice for canoeing. The kids will really like it. As for the best campsites, they are on the trail system right on the water. You have to either hike or boat to get to those ones though, and there is no power. The tackle/bait shop (and small general store) is St. Lawrence Outfitters (formerly known as Cast and Blast) (phone 613-659-3020). They are located right on the corner of the 1000 Island Parkway and Reynolds road in Lansdowne. From the main park they are about half an hour? Driving on the Parkway is a lot nicer than the 401 or Hwy. 2.
  19. While this is my neighborhood, I am not an expert. I believe there is only one area to camp at Charlston with hook ups. Not a bad area. Nice big areas to camp. The pay boat ramp is not far from there. I believe it is free if you are camping as you have park access. This is also gets you close to some good spots. There is also a nice hiking trail there and other things to check out. The beach is nice and big, with the swim area cut off to boat traffic. Another place to check out is KOA campground at Ivy Lea. This is right on the St. Lawrence River. It's also right across the road from a great tackle shop (not that I ever go there ). From here you can go straight up the road to Charleston Lake and use the free boat ramp. Get there early as the Wakeboard and ski boats usually take over the parking lot around 10.
  20. Thanks Dave. Will be checking out my schedule to see if I can make it. Scott
  21. Not to change the topic here, but did you say Basstalk in Ottawa? Do you have info for this, maybe in a new thread. I was intrested in your other one, but it was too far for me to go.
  22. I've been suckered into these, not once but twice. Hanging out at Dollarama while my wife shops and boom, shiny fishing lures, must have some. Insert Homer Simpson drool noises here. They looked great and were cheap. Well I tried a couple of them and was not impressed. They were way too light to cast any distance, and had terrible action. I didn't even bother putting it in a box for a maybe later or even donate it. I threw it out it was that bad. I then tried a diver that they had. Stoopid me for even thinking it would be different. Needless to say, I am not a fan of them.
  23. Not only is the wind and messed up temps bad, but the river has come up three YES THREE feet since 8:00 this morning. I just got back from the marina where my boat is sitting on an electric lift for now. I had to go trim the motor cause all the waves and ice were hitting the lower unit. By the time I finished that I had to put the plug back in and put ropes on it. I have a feeling I will be back down there in about two hours to go tie it to the dock because it will be floating and getting smashed.
  24. Found the flag, right up on the hight part of the rock in the middle. Nice pictures. You are making me drool over the second one though, as tha mountain is an ice climbers (that's me) heaven. Lots of vertical with easy access to the headwall.
  25. This is why I do buy from a store. If this does hapen, which it has to me, I can just take it back to them and they can deal with the supplier. Not defending the manufacture, but they need something tangable to go on. I can just imagine how many e-mails they get a day about faulty stuff from people just trying to get stuff. Being in retail, I know a lot of our suppliers will not even deal with you, you have to go to a retailer for service. I have experienced this twice with braided lines. I was able to take it back from where I purchased it and get the problem resolved easily. It is not uncommon to have a bad line, luckily I didn't loose any trophies, or maybe I did? I still use the one brand exclusively with great faith, power pro. One time I did have to deal with a Manufacture Daiwa about a lure that I purchased at LeBaron (whom I will not deal with for a long time). On the first cast the lure delaminated. Usually I wouldn't care, but it was a brand new $30.00 lure. Lebaron wanted nothing to do with it at all. I contacted Daiwa and explained why I had to deal dirrect. They fixed the problem right away as soon as they got the defective lure.
