  1. THANKS for the advice! But this unit appears to be discontinued. And any prices I see for Helix 7 graphs as opposed to Helix 5 graphs appear to cost hundreds of dollars more. What am I missing here?
  2. Welcome! The people on this board have been a very welcoming bunch, and full of good advice and knowledge. Doug
  3. I have a new boat coming and will put a new graph on it. I am NOT a competitive angler, so I don't need all the bells and whistles, PLUS I am an old fart and not a technically-inclined sort of fellow. 🙄 I was following a discussion on here a year or two ago but did not archive it (foolish me!) and so here I am asking for advice that some of you have no doubt provided before. I have been very much a Lowrance fan for ever (and Eagle, but that's like Chev/GM = same/same), BUT some people whose opinions I value are died-in-the-wool Humminbird fans. I NEED good, accurate depth. I LIKE a reasonable idea about fish and bait. Everything else is gravy. It looks like the HELIX 5 CHIRP GPS G2 is a very decent rig and is priced right at $440 plus tax. Is that a good choice? I am thinking GPS and "CHIRP" are both useful features, and that appears to be the lowest-end model that has both of those. I would very much value your opinions, and even more your own experiences with relatively new models of graphs. THANKS! Doug
  4. well...............it looks like I will be buying a Terrova 55 lb (12 volt) model with I-Pilot and a foot pedal. The new ride is a 16 foot Alumacraft with a 40 hp Yamaha. The hull is rated for 50 hp but there is a new 40 on it and no chance to swap for a 50. Thanks for all the advice, folks! Next question is a "fish finder" and I will start a new topic for that. Doug
  5. That would be EARLY 70s...................
  6. I see that a dealer does have one or two in stock, a bit of a hike for me to go, but it's actually THERE! 😉
  7. and did you find any for sale in Eastern Ontario? My local dealer could NOT order a Starcraft for me for 2022, there were none to to he had. Doug
  8. same here. But I "need" power tilt on my next rig. My back is getting crankier, and pulling up the motor to recover the boat at the launch is very unkind to my creaky old back. The motor is a 40 hp Honda and weighs about 400 pounds if memory serves me......... So I can buy a new prop or a new lower unit if I spank a shoal, but I can't get a replacement spine...........🙄
  9. Can a person BUY a new boat anywhere right now? I was not even able to ORDER one... Doug
  10. I bet ten people have sent me that video over the years. The guy CLAIMS he could do that in ten seconds, and I call Bull on that. AND HE LEAVES ALL THE BONES IN. Who on earth wants to eat a perch with the bones still in? That is a pathetic excuse for cleaning perch, and a great big fat lie about how long it takes. Perch are a dream to fillet because of their bone structure. And a person who is skilled with a filleting knife can take a perch and produce two boneless, skinless fillets in well under a minute. Doug
  11. I have been a tiller boat guy for a very long time. "EVERYBODY" says get the max hp your boat is rated for. That also jives with my personal experience on quite a number of boats, both mine and others. An under-powered boat struggles a lot, it's harder to steer, and has been noted, your fuel consumption sucks. The only reason I can think of to get a smaller motor is if you are putting it on and off the transom all the time. (Assuming, of course, that you can afford the extra $$$ for the bigger motor) Doug
  12. That appears to have got their hearts pumping.................😁
  13. You won FOUR centre pin reels???????????? Tungsten heads on those? Doug
  14. If that works out, and if you are able to do so without betraying any confidences, perhaps you could post that here? Doug
  15. Just asked Mr Google about that, it was a temporary shortage. Or so says the owner of the farm that produces the stuff. In the meantime, I buy summer savoury at the Bulk Store. Doug
  16. That has definitely been my experience as well, wrt colour of flesh. But it is still worth putting a snack out there for the greys, and if you are fishing a lake where both lakers and whitefish are present, you may well catch a bonus whitie on the fly. Doug
  17. sold out, and unknown when it will be available again. Freakin' covid.................😐
  18. Don't know about you folks, but K-town forecast for tomorrow is plus 12 with rain and winds 50 gusting to 75. NOT GOOD for the ice!!!
  19. On a back lake for four hours, 6 of us fishing, 7 dink perch and three OOS largemouth. BRUTAL. But we only had maybe 16 inches of ice, which surprised the hell out of me.
  20. Exactly. Misfish posted a link to a video of a guy showing the set-up. If I can find that reply I will re-post it here. But basically your fly is like a drop-shot rig, with a heavier lure a foot or so below it. For Simcoe, maybe a Meegs with an ice bug up 18 inches kind of thing for lakers and whities.
