A couple baitcaster questions
OhioFisherman replied to Christopheraaron's topic in General Discussion
I know a couple of guys that heard the old style green Curados were being changed years ago, these guys were heavily involved in the Bass circuit here, it was all they needed to hear to go tackle shopping and stock up on them. For the price? a great reel. Contact Shimano, the should be able to hook you up. They can probably be found on EBAY also. Some people don't like left hand retrieve baitcasters, although I am right handed? I rarely used anything else but a lefty. -
insight into fishing erie for walleye
OhioFisherman replied to maestrolaker's topic in General Discussion
No problem Dave, my experience with walleye fishing on Lake Erie was more limited to the Western Basin, basically the Island region of Lake Erie. Generally shallower waters there, and closer to the rivers on this side that seemed to have the spring walleye runs, the Sandusky and Maumee rivers. One of my younger brothers was a lot more into walleye and trout - salmon fishing. He fished the central basin and eastern basin for them too. Spoons, dipsys, downriggers, were part of deep water fishing I didn't have much of an interest in. -
Yep! The best neighbors we have!

That must have changed Dave? All we used when fishing the Western basin for them on this side of the lake was hot n tots or wiggle warts. Every tackle store in that area seemed to have them as their main walleye lures. This is going back to the 70's and 80's though. -

Tubes aren't just a deep water lure, lighten the weight and they work fine in water 5 to 12 feet deep. Small hair jig, 1/8 - 1/4 ounce and pork or plastic for a trailer. Small crankbaits, my favorite was the Storm Wee Steelie wart, but there are others that work. Roadrunner style baits http://www.basstacklemaster.com/Sworming-Hornet-Fish-Head-Spin-p/shfhs.htm A better hook than the standard roadrunner, you can also by a ponyhead mold and make your own. A Heddon sonar or other style blade bait, they vibrate like crazy and trigger strikes, you have to adjust your retrieve speed to the water depth, not just a jigging lure. Ball head or Mushroom head style jigs, throw on a 4 inch worm, lizard, or 3 inch grub. Carolina rigged soft plastics. Float n Fly, they work for smallies too.

I am not positive but the guy in the video seems to be fishing in the Erie Pa and Western New York area of Lake Erie. Roughly 100 - 150 miles east of here and a tendency towards a bit deeper waters. Walleye on Lake Erie are pretty well known to suspend, especially as summer increases water temp. Find baitfish, find masses of boats and there are probably walleyes in the area. If you look he has a series of videos on the subject that covers it pretty well, and seasonal patterns play a part. -

http://www.19actionnews.com/story/25865607/fairview-park-man-and-cleveland-company-charged-with-illegally-dumping " (WOIO) - An indictment was filed in federal court charging Thomas E. White, 49, of Fairview Park, and Kelly Plating Company with making illegal discharges with high concentrations of metals such as chrome and zinc into the sewer system, which in turn, after treatment, discharges to Lake Erie, said Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. The Kelly Plating Company is a metal plating operation located in Cleveland. White was an employee at Kelly Plating and responsible for operating the equipment which reduced the amount of pollutants discharged into the sewer system to an acceptable level, according to the indictment. Starting around January 28, 2012, White changed the way wastewater at the Kelly Plating facility was processed. During the weekdays, White ensured that the pollution control equipment was operated properly, according to the indictment. However, on the weekends White bypassed the pollution control equipment and discharged partially treated wastewater and sludge directly into the sewer system. These discharges contained high concentrations of chrome and zinc. This practice ended on May 19, 2012, according to the indictment. "

DZ Licence - TRUCKERS NEED YOUR HELP! (N/F)
OhioFisherman replied to rbaquial's topic in General Discussion
I am a retired Teamster city - local area driver, think long and hard about the switch. They have been trying to turn it into a minimum wage job for over 20 years. -
I might have tried shallower? Not familiar with your area, but here until mid May they seem to be in sheltered areas to spawn, the same areas that largemouth frequent to spawn a week or two later. Marinas with rip rap shores shallow bays with a mix of gravel and weed bottoms? and any cover like wood pilings and docks in shallow water. I am just guessing your spawn runs a bit later than ours.

LOL Dan! For some of the wackos here it probably would be a concern, some of those people seem to think Canada is a socialist country. Is it wrong to own property in both and love both countries? A degree of respect should be observed though, love the one you're with enough to put their flag on top? -

I believe here it maybe, on government property, on your own? You have certain first amendment rights, freedom of speech. It maybe a bit disrespectful? Aren't there more important issues in both of our countries to take issue with? -
The hook point rides up, no rotation, a keel shaped head also prevents it.

I think some people believe that just because their reel is old it is worth a fortune? Some of those old reels were produced in massive quantities, those are not usually the ones that carry the premium price. Collectors, look for condition and rarity usually unless they are limited to certain reels, some are difficult to find in any condition, but who wants to spend a fortune for a piece of junk?

Christopher, that was just some info off of wikipedia, I never went to Ontario before the opening day of bass season myself, and it's been a lot of years. It seem to me that our trip that was shortly after bass season opened, back in the 1970's so the memory and trips run together.

" For example, the emergence of one species of Hexagenia was recorded on Doppler weather radar along the shores of Lake Erie.[3] " http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayfly Years ago on a trip to Pointe au Baril there was a mayfly hatch going on, they were everywhere and rafts of them floating on the surface of the water with fish rolling on them constantly. It was our worst trip ever, the fish seemed to be gorging o them to the exclusion of everything else. Maybe a fly rod and wet flies? Match the hatch?
