Good for you getting out. My favourite time of year when the rivers are open. I am usually ice fishing them now. My fav river looked prime last night! Biting at the bit. On another note, try moving your reel down a few inches on your cork, you my like the extra room above the reel while fighting the fish. I do. My reel would be down close to the elastic. Jsut something else to try. Actually going back to using spinning reels in the real cold now too. My hand is a bit beat up from punching hockey helmets and as I get older and colder I find the spinning a bit easier for me to use. Cheers.

Killer for smallmouth Bill. Especially behind a zara spook or other walk the dog style bait. Usually a light rigged tube(I usually just rip a hole in the side of the tube, makes it sink) or senko is the deal. Depending on the day we have removed the back hook on the topwater to reduce foul ups because the fish were eating the plastic everytime anyways. There is other things I do for largies in the thick stuff with double bait set up. I remember one T on Scugog where the trailer bait was the only one the fish ate. Dock talk of the day was how the topwater bite sucked, but was great for us. That was one of the last T's I fished. Looking forward to 2012 after a little hiatus. As for the A rig, the only water I can think it will shine would be Simcoe, Lake O or Erie. I think there is to much weed to fish the smaller ponds with it. Would get tiresome very quick. Unless all you fished was channel beds. But who knows, someone will probably figure out how to use it somewhere on them.

I've icefished Scugog for many years now and every year is different. About 5 or 6 years ago the bite was brutal, even folks like us who fish it alot and had things pretty dailed in were getting few and far between. Then the big Mother Nature flicked a switch and for a couple weeks it was insane. I imagine this year will be the same. Just got to put in the time.

Roy is right. The umbrella rig has been around for years. If there are 4 lures it is legal in Ontario. There is a Canadian/Ontario 4 lure version coming soon.

Send me a PM bud, we can do a crappie/bluegill hunt on Rice. I've got into a few out there.

Mike, I just striclty looked at the boat layouts and power with no idea about price or the extras involved. Based on the above, I'd go with the Smokercraft.

Thank you sir, most fish have been found in the 6 to 12ft range. I use a drop shot style rig with two baits per line. Helps with the deeper stuff. Have some tungeston to try too. FinS is my Simcoe go to, but not much luck on Rice with it...yet. Thanks Leech! Hmm, I just got some of the Forage as well. I'll give them a shot too! Thanks

Hey all, I am heading up to Rice on Sunday to start my yearly hunt for the Crappies on Rice lake. I've got on them a few times the past couple years, but still struck out more often then not. Tough to find'em and once you do, to stay on'em. I am addicted to the hunt, it's like fishing new water since the Kawarthas opened up for ice fishing. Most fish are taken on Northland Creep worms or Lindy Frostees tipped with a maggot or Gulp baits (frys, minnow heads, leeches etc.) I am basically fishing for them like I do perch on Simcoe. Anyone more experienced on the hard stuff for crappie care to share what techniques they use for icing them? Thanks, Phil

Mike, if you are a guitar player check out the "gString Free" tuner. I use it when tuning down, works great. Also, "Jango" streaming radio, use it a lot as well.

Fishing from a tinny tomorrow.

I rarely get the lakers on the metal. The odd time if one comes in hot and spun and just smokes it. IMO, the flash brings them in and the plastic (tube, swimbait etc.) or live bait is usually what they eat once in the area.

We used plastic and glass beads before for whites, but to be honest we still found pearl their fav. That was quite a few years ago now. I have some Trout beads coming to my shop soon, maybe worth giving it a go again on the ice.
