Are we trying to run before we crawl? C/AV death today
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
I didn't start the tread as an anti A/V revolt. It may have morphed into one. I actually hope I'm still alive to see it become the norm. Heck look at all the money I will save flying across the country or to South America. I could be 90 and still drive. I wonder how much more an AV will cost than a conventional auto with a steering wheel and a throttle and brake pedal. I assumed when they come out it could be driven the conventional way, not without controls. I remember my Noni telling me when they started putting in telephone and hydro poles they were afraid they would fall over onto their houses and kill someone. Never happen unless they were hit by an AV. I've not heard from any of the auto guys guesstimate what they will cost. (wow guesstimate is a spellcheck word) -
Not 4 bucks but I made all my rod tubes out of various lengths of ABS, glued a cap on one end and a threaded coupling on the other end. Made a handles out of old leather belts glued and screwed.

Are we trying to run before we crawl? C/AV death today

We put our lives in the hands of computers already. If you are a passenger in a modern jetliner for example. From fly by wire to traffic control systems all computerised. The Hyundai 2 liter engine in the Sportage has a recall for a certain series, the engine may shut down at high speeds due to computer problems. Lawsuits are pending, people have been injured. 80% of peopled poled said they wouldn't trust AV's. I wonder what the percentage would be if all those polled were under 30? -
C/AV, a new acronym for me, Connected and Autonomous Cars. Uber has suspended it's testing of C/AV cars after a fatality today involving a AV car and pedestrian. I don't want to be a Dinosaur but I personally think we are a long way from calling for our car and it shows up for you. There is a recent Caddy commercial C6 I think, that does not have a steering wheel. I have always been a contingency type of guy, a back up for a back up when I was in the work force. Ford has also announced their AV's that they are hoping to be on the roads for 2022 will not have a steering wheel or brake pedal. I was under the wrong impression that these things could be driven the old fashion way like steering and stopping in the event of a technical failure. Wrong again. Will there be a road test in the future to get a drivers license? Why would you if all you owned was an AV? https://www.boston.com/cars/car-news/2018/03/19/self-driving-uber-vehicle-hits-kills-pedestrian-in-arizona

Aguri. They just keep pumping them out down your way Bruce. I'm only charging 5 grand these days to stand up as Godfather. OFC discount is 100% off going rate.

It's more like 4.05% go there not to have a good time. I do that exact thing when I decide to take in a Bills game. Plus it costs a heck of a lot more than a ticket to The Sportsman Show, way more. An corner end zone seat last October was $195.00 USD. 10 bucks US for a warm cup of Pony swill, 8 bucks for actually a not bad Hot Dog. I love having a bad time.

Lake O trib report (Update w/ new pic)
Old Ironmaker replied to Dutch01's topic in General Discussion
Dem right der are some beauty fishes. And I know exactly where you are. Pretty well any Lake Ontario tributary. It is not a well know spot though. That fact is confirmed by the lack of Tim Hortoncups. -
Dave I figured your accessibility to the home would be an issue for closed cell equipment. Cost is a big consideration as well. At my age the ROI is something I need to take into consideration if I ever build again. A few years ago I opted to pass on the lifetime warranty on a steel roof. At 85 years old he last thing I would worry about is replacing the architectural shingles. For my 20 and 30 something Godchildren, nieces and nephews it matters when the ROI kicks in. I always tell the guys do not scrimp on the Tuck Tape, install the vapour barrier properly using acoustic sealant at the sills. Make the building envelope as tight as possible. No one is going to suffocate for lack of O2. An improperly sealed dwelling is like going to all the trouble and expense of insulating properly then opening the front door and leave it open all year. Almost the same goes for a wall of cheap windows. The last time I checked a pane of glass is R-3 max. It's been a while. You know what you are doing big guy. As far as the question re: venting CO from the pellet stove the 1 I have seen has a stack, it not only vents CO it provides some ambient heat from the waste gas. I always ask HVAC folks and Building Inspectors, when I have all 5 gas burners going on the stove and oven cooking the Bird, where does the CO go? No exterior hood vent here. The question is usually met with silence.

So now it's dark at 7 instead of 6? As far as cold, well up there July can be considered cold to a southerner. It must be a shock to your system when you back from the Islands. Nice Crappy there Simon. We had a nice honey hole at a local marina we would hit after ice out but the idiots that leave a mess ruined it for us all now it's all fenced off and the only way in is by boat and the closest open ramp is 10 kms away.

Dave I have 2 things to say about your future insulation 1) Thermal Break. 2) Closed cell expanding foam. The stove looks great there. I know a guy out here on the lakefront that uses the pellet stove as his main heat source for 2000 ftsq and loves it. No vaulted ceilings though, a big factor. Not all of us can fall, cut, split, buck and haul in cordwood once the body decides to retire too. My back is so screwed up now I have a problem lifting a plastic garbage can with 2 bags into the back of the truck. I have to buy 12 packs of brown pops now, a 24 is too much to carry. Vodka and Cognac is much more effective by volume weight than beer anyway.

There are some good ones and some absolute dogs. If you haven't seen Dunkirk do yourself a favour and see it. I know you will love it. We saw Birdman at the show a few years ago, when it won Best Picture I said that's it, if that the best they have I am going to write a screenplay about the characters on OFC. I have a few actors in mind to play a few of you nuts on here.

We don't, simple as that Raf. You were posting when I was.

Netflix, Hoodo, android boxes running kodi, and it's all Greek to me. One guy says t"his is the best," the other says "no way this is". We really got into those black boxes 20 years ago to steal errr, intercept satellite channels, it drove me nuts so I just tapped out and never kept up with the technology. An old friend was the guy that took the whole "Are airwaves free or not" it to The Supreme Court. He lost, Bell and Rodgers had more lawyers then he did, many more. I promised my lady that when we get settled in our new place we will join the 21st century. I was told we don't have enough bandwidth with Xplornet out here in the boonies to stream well, that was a while back. I'm getting old boys. If I were this age 25 years ago the VCR would be flashing "12,,,12,,,12,,,12" It takes ma a few hours to set the clocks on the car and truck. I was one the first in my crew to buy a VCR, around 1200 bucks in the early 80's. What we can use to make HD movies on our phones today cost 2 grand and weighed 10 pounds and the sound and video was crappola.

Rented them from Bell TV. $6.99 ain't cheap but cheaper than at the show even though we have a bunch of passes from the Scotia Bank Scene card. $6.99 won't get you a bag of popcorn at the show. I stopped renting DVD's at the corner store, they are all cheap copies and 90% of them don't work, usually right at the end of the movie. I complain and it falls on deaf ears.

I ask this the same time every year for the past few after the Oscars are out. We have seen Dunkirk and this weekend saw "3 Billboards in Ebbing Missouri." And tonight watched " The Shape of Water." Dunkirk was my favorite. Shape of Water was my wife's fave. I picked out 10 places I know I recognized right from the 1st scene in Shape of Water, The creature from the black lagoon meets Helen Keller. My buddies bar on Locke St. was in it, The West Town. He was my buddy until I broke his nose 23 years ago. Is there a statute of limitations for hitting an idiot? Won best picture and they thanked Toronto. Hamilton City Hall isn't in TO folks. Those piles of sand were Pelletized Slag from Stelco. One of the scenes had cell towers in the background in the early 60's. I see a movie the 1st time and watch a movie the 2nd time. My favorite so far was Dunkirk. 2nd was 3 Billboards, strange but entertaining. Need to see the others. I'll pass on the Best Picture winner "Creature From The Black Lagoon Love Story." Talk about fish lips. Any favorites this year folks?

Protesting what? Needless torture of fish maybe? Fish torture me more than I do them.

It's tough on a single skew retailer to survive. Did they make anything else but fishing specific clothing? That is the very definition of a very thin single skew. -
Yea Bruce we lived on Hyde Park Blvd. If I had that place today I would be a multi millionaire if I had bought it. People talk about ridiculous prices of homes today in TO, they were ridiculous back then compared to Hamilton, just not as ridiculous. No I don't remember the tackle shop, lucky I can remember living in Toronto it was so long ago.
-
The 1st Sportsman Show I went to was in 74' when I was living on Roncesvalles in TO. Went for many years. It was common to come home with a sack of goodies including line and tackle samples, great prices on rods, reels and guns then. No FAC required in 74'. I bought a nice 12 gauge pump from the Outdoor Store booth for something like $60.00, still have it. I didn't go for about 20 years. The last time I went it was more of a Home Show than a Sportsman's Show. Many builders and sellers of prefab cottages like Holiday and Viceroy Homes and real estate guys selling lots. I don't want to see BBQ's and lawn furniture at a Sportsman's show. I was told the little Mom and Pop tackle and hunting stores couldn't afford the prices for space at the CNE. I'll tell you how long it's been Bob Izumi was skinny. Maybe it's changed, I hope it has.

I get you Garnet. My wife has been in retail since she was 14 and her Mom had a couple of Merle Norman stores in Niagara and Hamilton. She comes home with bite marks on her tongue still because some Maroon wasted an hour of her time picking out a lipstick then returns it used 10 minutes later "This was used when I got home so I want my money back." The Maroon customer had the lipstick on when she came back 10 minutes later and she lives 20 minutes away. Apparently she does this regularly, and isn't the only one. If it's fragrance Tich just gives her a sample because she knows she is going to use it then return the open 100 buck perfume the next day. I'll stop there.

J Meyer you hit the nail on the head. Not all businesses that fold are due to poor management and business practices. A while back I attended a seminar where a money guy told us that of all small businesses in Ontario that start today, 80% of them won't make it to year 2. Of the 20% that do survive year 1 80% of those don't make it to year 2 or 3. If you make it to year 4 you might be paying yourself, probably not until year 5, maybe, then it might be less than your employees. Not good odds to start a business in Ontario. Statistically one of the most difficult places to open a small business in North America. You can have a MBA and fail. Markets change, the CDN dollar fluctuates, suppliers go teats up and keep your valuable capital, recessions happen, raw material prices skyrocket, wages go up by law, rents go up, taxes go up, Comp. rates go up, off shore suppliers screw up your order, the list of what ifs are interminable. Then our government decides to put a tariff on your imported goods because the government of the country that makes your stuff has policy our Gov. doesn't like or detains a Canadian on bogus charges. Failure just isn't due to poor management I can tell you that. It is easy to drop your retail price by 50%, try raising it 1 dollar. -
The fish have been waiting for mid night since New Years. They are safe from the "Grim Tooner" for a few months. Walleye is open here all year Grim Tooner. I will be your safety boat. Now a Lake Erie Toon fishing video on a nice calm day (20 naughts) would be something more than 5 minutes I'd watch all the way through to the end.

Thanks for the link Tom. Until now I had never ever once heard of the gentleman. After reading just a snipped describing him I wish I had. He seems to be one in many a million. Diversify, I have to remember that word of wisdom. Men like Lefty are a rarity. It would have been an honour to have met him even though I have only held a fly rod once in my life. He wasn't about fly fishing he was all about living. I put away something I have wanted to do for many years, just reading a small article about this man of men I am going to go dust it off and give it another shot. Diversify. Thanks again both Akrisoner and Tom.

You have to remember Garnet, Morins spend money too. Morins are your custimers. The rest of your post eludes me. I must be a Morin.
