Purchasing a used boat from a dealer % rate
Old Ironmaker replied to AKRISONER's topic in General Discussion
That is not a boat, 1 step above a pool toy! Just because you catch more fish than 10 of us put together, or more, doesn't mean you catch them from a boat. If it doesn't cost you at least $100.00 per outing it ain't a boat! -
Fish Guy, welcome aboard. I don't want to sound mean and scare you away. That video 12 minute long is 11 minutes too long. His theory is flawed as far as perch go, perch school. A big chrome spoon or flutter bait maybe. The video should be called "attracting micro fish." A for effort.

I owned a 86' 3 series BMW convertible, it never cost me anymore than any other cars as far as reliability went. The least reliable car was my wife's 98' Pontiac Grand Prix bought in 2000 low K's, I bet I paid almost twice for that car. From alternators going out every year to power window switches frying. The rotors wore like they were made of wood. Those 3.8's were a tank though. All the windows leaked, and, and, and. Next worse was a 79' Audi 5000 bought in 80', how does a frame crack at 75,000 kms? I didn't drive it hard. It was breaking down constantly. I found out many VW parts fit at 50% of the cost as OEM parts from Audi thank goodness. The BMW was one of the most reliable cars I ever owned, but you have to do the service. I had her for 10 years. In 92' I owned 6 cars, sold all but the Benz and my daily driver, bought a rental home with a good down stroke. See below, 1969 Mercedes Benz 280.Some confuse scheduled service with unreliable. There can be a lemon in the basket of cherries sometimes. I'll tell you about sticker shock, what they want for a 15 to 18 year old Jeep TJ with high K's floored me. 6 to 10 thousand dollars, Wowza. I'll take my chances on a rag top BMW compared to a Jeep. Yes I drove a YJ for a few years. Fun yes but not that much for the price today. Never considered a Lexus or Scion. I don't think Scion has a convertible. Service on either wouldn't be any less than a European sports car I imagine.

Very nice Joey. Way back when the in-laws had a cottage at Bear Creek (70's through 89') we would head up there a few times a month and take vacation and fish for a week. A Nipissing tip icefishing. Be very quiet in the hut or the clam. We would be pulling them in regularly and Big Janko would come storming in with his size 12's and 90 db yap and the catching stopped, immediately for at least an hour, sometimes for the rest of the day. Stinger hooks on jigs both winter and summer on Nip. We used to SCUBA in summer and those Nip Pics would almost always nip at the tail, suck it in and hold the minnow, spit it out with scales floating in the water then take it head first. If you think she got off don't move the bait or drop it back down a foot and she may hit it again. It's good to know exactly how much line is retrieved with 1 revolution of your reel. The strangest thing I saw was where big Pike and smaller Walleye were feeding together on small baitfish and small perch ignoring each other. I was told that never happens, not.

We have spoken about your ride before. My Uncle and Dad had one when I was a kid. Always loved the soft lines. Cars of that era were works of Art. The car looks like it's moving when parked. When I was a kid Dad had a 50' Chevy like yours, a 55' Chevy 2 door hardtop, green on white and a 59' Chev wagon, forest green. I learned to drive on the 65' Impala. The next car he bought was a 69' Impala SS. He has always loved nice cars. That we have in common. Right up to his last vehicle at age 85' he has always asked me to shop with him. I asked the salesman at Queenston Chev Olds in 66' I was 11, how much he would give me for my bike towards the car? He's 90 now (91 in April) and wants to go car shopping with me. Ask him what he misses the most now and he says driving.

Nice ride Huzz. A safe car? You have never seen my wife drive. People I have never met have asked me to tell her to slow down. "You tell her." It must be said that I don't condone speeding and I have told her to slow down until I'm blue in the face. The last ticket she got the Cop asked her what's the rush? "I knew you were here waiting for me so I got here ASAP." I give up. But do admit she has slowed down quite a bit when our insurance skyrocketed 10 years ago. Back to the normal too expensive now.

Purchasing a used boat from a dealer % rate

If there are do overs in life I would have financed a boat after I got divorced in 89' and didn't wait until for almost 20 years, long years. I shopped around and knowing nothing about boats then I almost bought a 19' Bayliner cuddy with the "L" Force outboard, no internet with a bevy of knowledge to research then. It was a sexy looking boat and I was in the mood for that then. Actually I had the cash after I bought a condo but lost the boat cash it to a few bad legit deals so stopped shopping. So after that I was shy to finance, I could have afforded a payment. I did finance a Benz 560 SEC a few years latter that was my toy that I found in Florida that I sold 10 years latter for what I paid for it not including interest. Knowing what I know now I am glad I waited otherwise I may not have ever bought another boat when it fell apart. Those Force OB's didn't last 3 years. I didn't have to wait that 20 years though. Go for it man. Now because of my health it looks like I will be selling my baby this spring. You know what the best 2 days in a boaters life, I call Bull, I will be sad seeing her hooked up on another guys truck. You seem to be a level headed individual and can well afford a payment. No do overs in life. Go buy your boat. Not a 80's or early 90's Bayliner though. -
Took 20 years but finally a wall-mounter!

I didn't know the Kawartha's held Pics of that size, now I do. Congrats to you, she's a beast, big around the middle . And I concur those jigs Big Ugly makes really work. All they are is a bit of lead, a hook and a dab of paint but for some reason they out fish other similar looking jigs. The tube jigs I got from Bruce at the Fishing swap in Ancaster last year they out fished all others here for Smallies and I even got a bonus 3 pound Walleye where the Bass where last June and Lenny snagged a 5 pound Pike that broke him off on a Bruce Tube. I had to lend one to him then and only then did he started catching when he didn't before switching to a Big Ugly Tube (I'm copywriting that). Why they work when others do not? I have no idea and don't care either. Maybe he get's his cutie patooty baby Grand Daughter to drool on them. She's the one who actually sold them to me. Good marketing move Bruce. -
Whatever I buy will be a weekender. I know only too well the pitfalls of European cars not new. Been towing them home for 45 years. My very first car I bought was a 67' MGB, blew the timing chain on the QEW the week after I bought it, I paid $500.00 for the car in the summer of 73'. I repaired that sold it and bought a 72' TR6 the same summer from the British Leyland dealer in Hamilton for $3200.00. I must have liked pain. Still must. I will hold off until spring after we sell and get settled in the new place. I might even have some money in the bank then! If I decide to sell the boat I will put it towards a different toy. These days I don't really need my own boat, the boys told me I always have an open seat in one of their many boats. We are always arguing about which of our boats to take out. One of the few advantages of aging. You know more freinds with boats!

Got a call today the guy said that he got a full ask offer and if I wanted to beat it, I told him congratulations, one of the oldest tricks in the book. More shopping. Thanks for all the comments boys.

I couldn't remember which one, soft or hard. It may have been the hard one I took out not put in. Like I said I'll ask the guys at the marine. iboats.com is an excellent boating forum, those guys know their stuff and I always highly recommend it. Terrible fishing forum though. Thanks John.

Much older Bill, 1995 E36. 3rd gen 3 series. An M3 with the 286HP 6. Looks to be in great shape, a removable hardtop and 3 sets of wheels and tires with service records and asking a fair price. Doing the service on a Beemer is an absolute must, as important as on a Ferrari and most higher end European sports cars. Not cheap but will save you many thousands in repairs in the future. For example many buy or lease new or buy slightly used and come to 60,000 KMS and find out the HVAC service is around $900.00 and put it off. When the AC goes out at 100K that 900 buck service turns into a 2500 buck or more repair. Years ago I read an article in Motor Trend (when you had to flip pages) there was an 86' 3 series I read about that has 1 million miles on it. That's when I had a 86' 3 series. 320 if I can remember that long ago. We had a family vote when my wife got home tonight. Her 2 veto votes outweigh my single Yea vote. That doesn't mean an absolute "no way Jose." I have a way to get her to cross the aisle sometimes and come together in a bi partisan fashion. But I may need to save this one for something fishing related to fund in the future. There are always millions of used cars for sale in the future. Talking about old fashioned magazines I recently asked the 20 something receptionist at a Dr's office where are all the magazines were and she replied "Just use your phone, we have WIFI." Man I'm getting older.

2019-2020 Hockey Thread
Old Ironmaker replied to DRIFTER_016's topic in Non-Outdoors Open Discussion
I always liked Domi's game when I watched Hockey regularly. What he did to Samuelsson was uncalled for then and totally out of character for him. He was a Pit Bull on skates and feared no one, he would have gotten into the ring with Mike Tyson if he knew it would help his team mates. He still looks like he could go a few rounds. I just felt it was out of Big Dave's character to say what he said. Now there is a guy (Big Dave) that I wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley. -
I am going to the shop tomorrow and will ask the Marine Guru's how flexible an impellor is supposed to be. I'm thinking not much at all, the few I have changed were much stiffer than the ones removed, for sure. Different machines may differ though. I'll ask for the both of us.

2019-2020 Hockey Thread

That's what referees and Commissioners are for Dave. I know what I as well would like to do to some people but as I mellow with age and am in a not too bad financial position that's why you hire someone to do it, otherwise known as an enforcer, don't they have those NHL Goons anymore? Nothing more than hired hitmen. . When I came home from school one day all beat up my Calabrese born Noni told me to "Get upstairs and do all my homework, subito". "How in heck would that help me fight Noni? I asked. She said "Because when you get a good career because of your education you can hire someone to do it for you." Smart woman she was. Mellow with age can be translated to "too old, weak and tired to fight well anymore." -
Looking at an earlier model 325i convertible as a weekender. The 325i hasn't changed much for years. Any specific pro's and cons. I know they aren't cheap to maintain, I've had a few over the years. But then again what is cheap to maintain today? Nothing. Thanks all.

Sorry Dave but that is a terrible thing to say. If you worked with someone you absolutely despised would you want to see him or her harmed so badly that they lost their livelihood and suffered pain for life? I didn't think so. -

A pack of smokes a day= $420.00 a month A 24 a week and a bottle= $240.00 a month $8160.00 annually and I'm being conservative, more like 10K a year cash on booze and cigarettes. Some people must choose as to what is in their budget, simple as that. I have known some guys, and gals, that smoke a pack or more a day each, down a 24 a day and a few bottles a week between them. They usually don't own a boat or can tell the front from the back of it on a good day, sad really . -
I know it is of the best intentions. I think web pages are getting so busy these days I find it distracting when I'm trying to read. Just something new, the banner is there anyway I guess.

What they said. I also thought I had to change the impellor on my 115 Mariner. Ran a length of heavy duty weed wacker line down the overflow hole and problem solved. Make sure it's long enough to get to the bottom of the lower end. I have changed a few impellors recently at the shop and never came across a small O ring Rizzo. edit: Because the impellor spins easily and there aren't any cracks doesn't mean it hasn't softened up. Unless you know how stiff they are supposed to be it's tough to tell for us laymen unless you have a new one in your hand. It isn't a silly thing to change it anyway. I know guys that do every year. Depends how hard and how much you use the thing.

2019-2020 Hockey Thread

I love reading your threads here. I love the passion and the hockey knowledge. You guys are good, and funny too. That Bobby Ore quote John Bacon passed on is hilarious, thanks John. I worked the door at Don Cherry's bar during the filming of his shows way back when. He was exactly the same off the air as on. A good guy if you did your job. He would buy us a round and sit for a bit after the filming as well as the gaffs and techs, not for the producers that I ever saw. And he loved Hamilton, his Mom lived there before she passed not far from Walnut and Main. There was also a dweeb producer on that show that was an ass, now he is a multi million dollar ass unless he's changed, I doubt it, Kevin O'Leary. I had to laugh when he told me to get him a coffee, yea right. -
I know there are a few NFL fans here, that's really how I came to know M2B2, Rick. I put a few sheckles on the Eagles. Congrats Eagles, after all these years they are deserving. The fans can be the meanest fans in most all sports, including hockey. I hardly wager anymore, this is the 1st time since the Bills Super Bowl run that I have bet with my heart and not the head, and besides that rule #1 in Super Bowls don't bet against New England, rule #2 is see rule #1. I've had enough of the 2 aliens in New England winning Super Bowls. Belichich and Tommy Boy must have lost communication with the Mother Ship. Coach Belichich for sure. He was out coached for the 1st time in a long time. It was a fun game with all those points scored. When the Pats came out guns a blazin' in the 3rd quarter I said here we go again. I enjoyed the football itself, at least the parts I watched. I have a problem watching any game, any sport that I have a vested interest in. During the second half I washed the dishes, cleaned the fridge and stove and cleaned the toilet. Ticha said there should be a Super Bowl every week. I'll watch the replay this week. Something strange happened on Bell TV. On the NBC station we got all the Super Bowl commercials, on CTV there were different adds. There were a few cute ones but I have no idea what all the hype is all about. 1/2 time show was a bust I'm told. I believe they cut it off as 1/2 time was only 30 minutes, it is usually 45, strange, I didn't watch it. Tich said the sound was terrible and it wasn't good anyway. She said the Grey Cup show blew it away, I'll watch Shania any day over Justin Beeberlake or whoever it was. Talk about mean fans, it was the Eagles fans that pelted Santa with snowballs one Christmas, when interviewed he said he truly feared for his life, 70,000 snowballs can kill a guy. The Flyers owner had just passed away and the fans were all given bracelets to commemorate his recent death, when the Flyers were being beaten badly that game they all threw their bracelets onto he ice. It took a while to clean them all up, hitting one while at full stride can do some bodily harm. The QB coach for Philly has the exact same name as I, 1st and last, Mom says we have relatives in Youngstown Ohio where he was born, not too sure about that. I hope you Hockey nuts on OFC enjoyed it as well . I guess I'll be trying to watch some hockey until next summer, hockey season runs into the summer, June is summer to me, no?

Purchasing a used boat from a dealer % rate
Old Ironmaker replied to AKRISONER's topic in General Discussion
^^^^^^^^This. Otherwise a home equity line of credit is your best rate, new boat or used. -
Very nice Joey. What a beauty!!!! 4 pounds minimum, probably closer to 5. When you don't have a tape hold the fish to the tip of your finger at it's head and hold it up your arm and make note where the tail ends. Then measure that latter. I have to ask how in Hell can you catch quality fish without many hundreds of dollars of electronics and tackle. 13 minutes is perfect for a fishing video by the way.
