I would do what you are doing really. I typed the text below before I read FishFinder 17's post to see if we would post basically the same thing and we did. Like FF17 said find a point that has a deep drop off especially close to a feeder creek or bay. They will be stacked up all along that drop off during the hotter times of the day then they will move into shallower water as the temps drop. Work the entire water column with spinner baits, big jigs with trailing rubber and crank baits. The fish might just not be hungry and unless you snag one they aren't going to be hooked. Especially in the Dog Days of summer.

Somewhere I found a chart that tells you how far the horizon is at ground level looking across the ocean or large lake. Any idea as to where to find it again? I'm here all day bugging everyone as my wife took my truck and her car is in the shop. Being without a vehicle sure sucks when the closest civilization is 10 K away and I'm walking on crutches because I don't know why my foot is swollen and hurts like stink. There is water I can fish in 40 feet from the deck and I can't walk down there! Plus I can see the fish!!!! That's brutal. "Fibre Malaysia" is Latin for "we don't know why it hurts, take these pills and go away".

New to me bass boat, and a few questions for owners.
Old Ironmaker replied to Bass Tard's topic in General Discussion
Nice ride, congrats. There are bad Trackers and good ones too. I hope you lucked out. As far as props go, if you get a aluminum prop to give you a good hole shot it is at the sacrifice of top end speed and vise versa. Go to iboats.com and go to the props discussion forum. If your answer is not there it doesn't exist. I find many guys really over think prop selection as they put to much science into it and there are so many factors like weight distribution and water conditions that make each and every boat unique. I have to add hitting waves and wakes doing 40 something MPH will make an aluminium even glass boat leak faster then drilling a hole in it. Sorry to say especially a Tracker. They are not built robust enough to ride them hard and the shallow draught of any alum. Bass Boat even more so. Hold on Bubba, is it aluminum? -
AKRISONERS - Semi Annual somewhat year in review
Old Ironmaker replied to AKRISONER's topic in General Discussion
Man what a great report. Now at least I know how to pronounce your handle. I might have an idea as to what it means too. You really remind me of me 30 years ago. If I wasn't fishing I was doing reno's on my days off. If that's you with the dark hair and beard you even look like me 30 years ago. edit: I think that's Dave. Great tile job on the washroom. I can't see behind the tile to say good job there though. Congrats on the engagement, now I'll tell you what I say to every newly engaged guy. Buy the best quality rec room furniture you can. For us that have been divorced you know what I mean.- 17 replies

What are you watching lately, TV, Movies..etc
Old Ironmaker replied to ckewley's topic in General Discussion
I haven't watched a TV show from the big networks for years since we got satellite. HBO, Showtime and others all put out weekly series with ZERO commercials that feel like you have watched a 1 hour movie every week. Game of Thrones, Ray Donavan, Shameless, True Detective, Outcast and many weekly series that are no longer in production. The best ever was Deadwood. Many people I know have never heard of these shows because they have cable. If it has a commercial every 4 minutes I will not watch it, even watching the news bothers me with the interminable commercials that insults our intelligence. Turner Movie Network TMN has oldie movies from the silent era to 60's commercial free. If you are a movie buff you have to get it anyway you can. Unfortunately we don't have the Band Width with Xplornet to stream with a box that I can get on the cheap. -
Wouldn't that give you a kink in the chain? I know for sure that kinks in the crane chains was a no go for a lift.
-
I would think the weak point of the chain is either the hook as stated before and the connection to the trailer itself. I see many self tapping bolts that are rusted to all heck and cracks in the tongue where the bolt is attached. I think that connection should be a shoulder threaded stainless through bolt if it isn't. I need to look at my trailer.

Awesome sunrise and a bonus whitefish for a snack
Old Ironmaker replied to misfish's topic in General Discussion
I'm usually going to bed at sunrise Brian. Unless fishing to beat the heat. I've been away from Blast Furnaces for 10 years now and the heat is starting to bother me this year. As for the fish, me want 1 too. Is that the way you always do up Whitefish? I've caught a few on Nipissing 30 some odd years back in the spring and kept one and backed it in the oven slathered in butter with lemon slices on it and spices. -
I would also be concerned as to chain length. Not much good if they are close to the ground and won't catch the trailer if it un couples. Princess Auto will know your chain break strength requirements, they should. Wormdunker probably knows as he is a Hoisting Engineer.

It's on my bucket list but I need to make the time to get there shorter. Mainly because I need to bust this M2B2's corleone.

I see that Vertigo is terrible. A good pal out here has it too. He owns 2 nice boats for the big waters here, a 21 foot StarCraft centre council and a 28 foot Grew. He has gone out exactly 1 time this year because of it. Dr's just keep changing his meds and they are done with it. I have heard the horror stories. My old GF that eventually became Divisional Superintendent where you are got a 3 week unpaid suspension as well as a Foreman 2 weeks off for "Payroll Fraud". The very first week I got a Foreman's job we went from the plant to Point Abino to do chores at the Super's cottageI always paid OT to someone that was willing to work it at the rate of pay that he owned even though he covered a lesser paying job rate. Or when we asked guys to go on days on Special Duties to do WHIMIS training and things that had to be done and pay him or her their job rate. I would have been fired by the Yanks if I stayed until they took over, or charged with assault. The General Shift Foreman could not make a simple decision there without the OK from Pittsburg. I would have lost it. Chin up Pics, gew got a job mang.

I decided to buy a deep V boat after renting a 14" Jon boat with a 9.9 on it 9 years ago. I was fishing an inland lake in upper NY state solo. Hardly and wind and zero chop. I came around a bend and a gust of wind nearly flipped the boat over. Water started coming over the transom. I turned it around and went to the shore to load some rocks into it and drain the boat. I paid for 3 days and it sat there for 2, I swore never again. I know there are many people that have and enjoy flat bottom boats, not this guy ever again.

As above. I have only 2 Musky sized lures a huge Mepps spinner in chrome, red and gold beads with yellow hair and a large floating Rappala in perch colour. We panning on trolling with my downrigger and Dipsy rods at more than 3 MPH. I was watching Charlie Wray this AM and they were trolling between 5 and 6 MPH. Any help to us non Musky guys will help. I really don't want to fork out the more than 10 bucks a plug for stuff I will never use much again. Thanks folks ahead of time. Johnny D

Trolling Musky Lures, getting caught in weeds
Old Ironmaker replied to Tjames09's topic in General Discussion
You Musky hunters sure work for them, I have to give you that. The only real Musky trip I had was with Dannny Columby on Nipissing and I really enjoyed the trolling compared to tossing those Double D's I think they were. Like casting bricks. Good on you guys. Hammer em Boys and Girls, you've earned it. I need to go for them again asap. Planning a fall trip to Lake St. Clair. Not many trophy critters but to me that doesn't matter. There is nothing like hooking a Musky in my books. As close to Saltwater fishing you can get. I'll be trolling. I should start a new thread asking if my largest Walleye plugs work there with downrigger rods? -
Working is no excuse not to fish. I swear if anyone walked into my hovel of an office and said they wanted the weekend off to go fishing I would have said yes. But they didn't, including saying they were kidnapped on May 24 weekend (walleye opening at his cottage) and couldn't escape until Tuesday. That was fun.
-
I would think by this time of the year more and more fishin' reports would have graced our pages. I did get 3 nice Walleye this week (nada yesterday) off of Nanticoke at an average of 8 lbs, each. I have pics but need to post them. 8 colours of lead core with all 3 hitting the Reef Runners. Purple and brown in about 70' down 30' . Overcast skies, I like the darker colours in an overcast. Nothing on harnesses. I really enjoy some political stuff but after all it is fishing season. Johnny D

I didn't watch today. Too bust getting skunked. 4 hrs no fish. I'll check the leader board. We threw every thing we had at them today, zero catch. Oh well

He is a Canadian amateur that just happens to be tied for the lead with Dustin Johnson at minus 7. This is like the Hamilton Tiger cats being tied with the Denver Broncos at half time. This is huge for us. Go kiddo.

Man sometimes I wish there was a Like button here. I will tell you one thing they will have the hottest First Lady since Jackie. The morning news will be interesting if that idiot gets in. If there is a morning news after he open the Football and has us all blown up real good. JoePa I understand the need to change the status quo and stop the madness from professional politicians but of all people Trump? Come on there has to be someone else. He won't last a single term before he is impeached or worse. I believe the "worse" scenario unfortunately, there are a few nuts in the US more than willing to do it.

Great diners, drive inns and dives near you? NF eating
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
That's the one Pics. Cost isn't an issue compared to all the coin I lost at the Casino. Actually I'm up and haven't been for 5 years, money is too hard to come by to leave it at a casino. I can count on my hands how many times I have gambled at a Casino and we used to go to Vegas with my guys. I'm a gambling voyer. -

I don't get out much Chris. Many of the good old haunts are closed now like the Day and Nite Tavern at Lake and Hwy 8, best morning after hangeover meat loaf and gravy on the planet. -
Thank you for that info GG. My alkky pals say they are too pickled to get cancer. I've beat Cancer, so far so good, now pass me the Dr. Smirnoff. My Dad is going on 90 and I don't think he has missed his 2 glasses of wine and shot of Crown Royal a day in my 61 years. Some days much more than that for sure. My Mother hasn't had a single drink in 61 years and spends all of her free time in Hospital so go figure. Actually she's at Hamilton General right now, again. She knows the staff there by first name.
