PED has not been a major factor in pork prices and has been basically under control in Canada since early summer. It had a moderately more significant effect the US but since most (about 60%) of our pork is exported the effect here has been minimal. The single biggest cost in raising livestock is feed, you cannot discount that. A not bad summary of the cause and effects: http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/higher-meat-prices-in-store-for-consumers-1.2750441

When we started using all our corn to make ethanol to burn in our vehicles it drove feed prices way up and farmers reduced livestock production since there was no margin left. We are still seeing the effects of that on the livestock prices even though the grain prices have retreated to some degree. Pork has increased 65% since November 2011.

Well you're tossing the Lowrance aside just because you don't like the way the zoom works......seems that you already have decided what you want so why ask?
-
The Lowrance Gen2 Touch is hard to push aside just because you don't like the zoom control....it's an amazing unit. The zoom control is simple the way it is and you don't mess up the screen so much with oily hands and stuff. I bought the new 9" Touch last year to replace all my Garmin stuff and there is absolutely no comparison in either the GPS or the Sonar. Lowrance wins hands down.

I have had Access Roll Up covers on my last 4 trucks over the last 14 years and they are perfect for me. I just ordered another one for my new Laramie Diesel yesterday . They roll up in any weather, simple one person operation, support snow loads without collapsing and are totally out of the way when rolled up. I have had zero issues with durability, tears etc. If you want to take it right off, it's one bolt and gone in no time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Fy-LfFERqow

Just to put this into context, the plan is to track the positions of known commercial pirate fishing vessels on the internet using their AIS transponders so authorities can keep an eye on them. There are 300 vessels on the 'blacklist' worldwide. Not saying it makes sense but that is what they are talking about. I guess we can put away our tinfoil hats, at least for now.....

The electrical code requires that you use an approved manual transfer switch to switch between utility and generator power so that there is no way both can be turned on at the same time. Your generator can backfeed onto the grid and is dangerous for hydro workers not to mention what will happen to your generator if the main power comes back on while the genny is on line. They aren't really expensive but can be a pain to hook up.
-
So if you're not home who will hook it up and make it run? Personally in the last 5 years I have had two outages that lasted 48 hours or more and numerous shorter ones that would have resulted in basement flooding. I am not at home and the peace of mind and lack of damage is worth every penny.

That's great if you are on city water but if you don't it's useless in a power outage.

What's the cost of having a garage/ shop built? NF
G.mech replied to chris.brock's topic in General Discussion
Thats true but if you ever want to finish the inside it's kind of a pain to do much over the spray on. Depends on what you want out of your shop...mine is a man-cave and nicer than my house in a lot of ways (like it's much quieter and peaceful out there...) -
That is horrible. An outfit in Phoenix AZ got my ailing father for over $20,000. It all started with a phone call but before long they had him so convinced that they were legit that we couldn't do anything to stop it from happening. BEWARE of USA Supreme Technology & Primetime Marketing Solutions, they are thieves who pray on the elderly and have it all figured out so they can avoid the law.

I get a little satisfaction by playing dumb......extremely dumb. They hung up on me last time

Here is a link to a previous thread on the generator discussion. Lew posted pics of his install. Mine is very similar only a bit bigger and a bit older. Not cheap but worth every penny if you're out in the boonies and away from home a lot: http://ontariofishingcommunity.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=72833&hl=generac&do=findComment&comment=827601

I have lot of water to pump especially in winter and spring and we aren't home during the day. I have a similar 'high/low' pump with separate lines like Entropy said which works great but if the power goes out I would be doomed within an hour. I now have an automatic standby generator to back them up but before I got it I put in a half decent battery backup system. I put two batteries on it and it would keep things in check for about 12 hours and it runs about 1/3 of the time. It saved our bacon a number of times when we weren't around. I now have all three systems so there is no possible way anything could ever go wrong......right????

What's the cost of having a garage/ shop built? NF

Any outbuilding over 538 sq ft requires either a full foundation or an engineered floating slab in addition to a building permit for anything over 100 sq ft. Costs for an engineered slab alone would likely be $8000 or so for an 800 square foot shop and full footings would be a little more again. A pre-fab metal building would likely be cheapest but depending on what you want at the end it may not be the easiest thing to insulate & finish. A wooden structure insulated, with some heat and power is likely going to cost you $40k unless you do all the work yourself. I just put nice fibre cement siding on my shop that size and the material alone was almost $5000....it ain't cheap especially with permits and all involved. -
From Page 8 of the regs: So, as we have beaten to death before, these are legal since they only use the rod under tension to set the hook. Also, even it if wasn't legal, it can still be sold in Ontario as it is not against the law to sell tackle that is illegal to use. This too has been discussed at length before (i.e 5 position alabama rigs).

Navionics + is the best deal really, you choose whatever lakes you want and download the freshest data available with 1 foot contours. The video doesn't mention is because it wasn't out when it was made. It saves buying multiple cards in many cases. Also, some retailers have been telling people that they have issues with Navionics+ but the truth is that they have a whole bunch of Platinum and hotmaps cards in stock that they don't want to get stuck with.....I won't mention any names but it's a crock.

Well, I needed a $5 part for my 6 month old LG stove and the Canadian customer service was NON-EXISTENT. I didn't really care that it was under warranty and didn't need a service call, I just wanted them to mail me the little part. Nada, I got nowhere after days of phone calls and e-mails so I gave up and managed to buy the part on-line from the US. Even the private repair companies I called refuse to have anything to do with LG due to their crappy support. I really hope you have better luck than most people with LG but if you end up buying a new one, I would look at something that can be serviced.

I have done a tinny using gluvit with very good results but, as suggested, all the rivets were tightened first which may have been a big part of the success. The gluvit has been on the seams for 5 years now and the boat still doesn't leak a drop.
-
Where in the regs does it say this? I just want to read it myself so I'm clear. Does it count against the guy who nets the fish too?

This has likely been covered before, if so I apologize. Anyway, I have not been able to log on to OFC lately from either of my laptops at home but at work it is fine with the same computers. Using my home network I get an error saying "Sorry, you don't have permission to go there". All other websites are fine and I have tried both IE and Google Chrome. I just tried logging on using my other ISP and everything is fine. Any ideas why this could be happening? Thanks in advance.

Can you tell me the name of a part I,m looking for
G.mech replied to misfish's topic in General Discussion
Glad you found your parts Brian but just in case anybody else is looking for snap buttons or spring plungers, here is a link to the company the makes and sells them: www.valcocleve.com You can order the basic models at Grainger Industrial supply outlets in Canada and they will mail them to you: http://www.grainger.com/category/snap-buttons/pins/fasteners/ecatalog/N-n3p -
It is perfectly clear in the regs and has already been posted by another member that you are to pinch the tail.....not sure where the confusion comes in. If you don't pinch the tail to measure a fish just under the slot size you're gonna get yourself in trouble. As for the contour, they measure with a flat board so either use a ruler or pull the tape tight, do not follow the contour. Cut and pasted from Page 8 of the current regs: Size Limits – All size limits refer to total length which is a measure from the tip of the mouth with the jaws closed to the tip of the tail, with the tail fin lobes compressed to give the maximum possible length.

If you have it shipped USPS (NOT UPS, Fedex, Purolator or anything else) it usually shows up without duty, taxes, or brokerage but you're not always that lucky. I have bought tons of stuff this way and I would say 90% of the time it comes through no problem Worst case, they pinch you for HST and a small brokerage fee as most of this stuff is duty free anyway. Funny story, I bought an HDS 12 touch from California last year and it came in no problem but it didn't work right. I returned it and got another one and again no HST. It still didn't work so I returned it again and the third time I got pinched for the HST (like 300 bucks or so). Turned out it was a faulty power cord.....ooops. If the vendor had simply put "warranty return" on the papers I would have got away scott free. Anway, figure out the deal and if you can add the exchange and 13% HST without costing more than here, give it a shot. Even after paying the fees I still saved 600 bucks on mine.

THIS JUST IN: Elgin County OPP have arrested and charged 20 year old Michael Larson of St. Thomas in connection to the theft and arson of the OPP police boat in Port Stanley on Wednesday, June 25th. He has been charged with theft over $5,000 and Arson. Elgin OPP are still searching for 37 year old Gerald Jacques of Port Stanley. He faces the same charges as Larson
