  1. In my Honda, when I put the key in I must then push the key in to turn it into the correct slot - radio only of ignition. Since you can turn the bottom part of the key and start the car, is it not possible for you to do the same thing if you were to use a small pair of pointed pliers? If you can, you should then be able to turn the key with the pliers into the proper slot to pull the key out. carp-starter - good luck these American car dealers are smart. Since the manufacturers are losing money by the ton, they might as well charge you an arm and a leg for a spare set of keys. All I have to do is go to Honda dealer with my key number or have a key cut and get a replacement. A hardware store is also OK.
  2. I sure do know what it means. Come spring time, the Leafs will reach 42 years without a Stanley Cup. On TV news, the Leafs are basically the laughing stock and the hope is that at least the Leafs get into the final 8 teams. Look at the goalie position. The Leafs are looking for a "good" goalie. I am not too sure but I would guess that they have problems at all positions. A situation like this does not allow a team to win the Stanley Cup. Oh well, it will be another year for "rebuilding". Correct me if I am wrong. I think the HABS have won the Cup 9 times since the last time the Leafs have won the CUP. No wonder the HABS go and the Leafs go golfing. carp-starter
  3. tjsa stated --- tjsa, I am old enough to remember that the program was on TV just about 2 months ago when it was terminated. It was being shown on Sun TV, CKXT here within the Cogeco area (Burlington, Oakville etc). Sun TV is showing other old TV shows in the afternoon during the week. How old are you since you must remember the time it was show originally? Have a nice Thursday - carp-starter
  4. Oh boy. This reminds me of a program that was on TV a long time ago - "The Forest Rangers". It was about a bunch of kids who somewhere in Northern Ontario ran around the country side catching bad guys or helping to catch bad guys and at the same time getting into trouble. carp-starter
  5. "Oklahoma fishermen have a tradition of catching catfish with their bare hands." If any of you are up and interested in the above, you will be able to see the one hour program on TV at 4AM on the WNED (PBS) station. carp-starter

  7. I have nickel ferrules. I always carry in my vest a piece of a candle in a plastic bottle (to keep the candle clean). Here is what I do: I first blow on the candle thinking it will soften it a bit. Using strokes, I rub the candle on the male ferrule. I blow on the ferrule – again thinking it would soften the film. Using my thumb and finger, I rub in the film on the ferrule. Now, using something clean (cloth or whatever) that will not leave any residue on the male ferrule, I wipe off any of the candle on the male ferrule. I WANT TO END UP WITH A CLEAN AND SMOOTH FERRULE. Here are 3 forum threads that should answer any questions that you may have. please help.... stuck ferrules http://clarksclassicflyrodforum.yuku.com/topic/1183 Stuck Ferrule http://www.southeastflyfishingforum.com/forum/showthread.php/stuck_ferrule-18961/index.html Bamboo Rod Do's and Don'ts http://www.rodbuildingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=6304&st=0 carp-starter
  8. Thank you everyone for suggestions. I will check them out. I have already checked out Princess Auto web site about a month ago but I gave up. They use pdf files and I cannot stand pdf files. Pam, your suggestion would be perfect but I have side effects using those magnifier glasses. I get dizzy and I get a headache. I wear glasses and these do the same unless I use them at about 1 ½ feet from my eye balls – mine are just for reading at the 18 to 20 inches in front of me. At my age, my eyes are not like they used to be at the age of 20 and I do need some magnification to tie the dry flies.. Here are some PICS of what I plan to tie once I get a magnifier glass – tie some small flies. The PICS are not mine. Normally I tie dry flies in sizes #14 to #24. I have tied and used some #26. This hook is probably #30 or #32 Some flies when compare to an American penny Size #30 parachute at the end of a finger Size #32 Bunny – a midge If anyone wants any info about fly fishing or fly tying, just contact me. Believe me, in the winter fly tying is a lot more enjoyable than to watch the 1967 Stanley Cup winners every Saturday.. Thanks for your info guys. carp-starter
  9. I need help from you guys as to where I can buy a magnifier glass that I could use for fly tying. I want one with a base and with a flex arm. I do not have a place on my desk to use the “clamp” type. I would like the flex arm to be a minimum of 12 inches long but I would prefer one that is 16 inches minimum. I am not looking for one that is part of a lamp system - I already have 3 excellent lights from OTT-LITE that produce natural light. I would prefer to buy it from within Canada but I can be convinced to buy it from the USA. I live in Oakville and so buying one locally (or close to being local) would be best. I do not want the type that has to be attached to my vice. I know of a place that sells one – Lee Valley in Burlington. It might satisfy my requirements. The flex arm is only 12 inches long but it might be OK – I will have to check it out in person. BPS also sells one that is similar (also 12”) and cheaper by 2/3 to the one from Lee Valley. So, if anyone knows where a magnifier glass with a base and a flex arm can be bought, please lead me in the right direction. I thank everyone in advance. carp-starter This one is from Lee Valley – arm is only 12 inches.
  10. If I were an auto mechanic, people would come to me with their car questions and car problems. If I were a lawyer, people would come to me with their legal questions and legal problems. If I were a doctor, people would come to me with their medical questions and medical problems. Now, what do you think the priest is there? Or a minister or whatever. If people do not go to him, he soon will be unemployed. In any case, it would be good to see him so that he would feel that he has a purpose on this earth. carp-starter
  11. I checked that Cabelas scale at $29.99 - Digital Fish Scale and Tool Kit. Wow, you sure get a lot for $29.99. But I would not touch it ith a ten foot pole even at 10 bucks CAD. If I use a weigh scale to weigh anything, the most important thing is how accurate is the scale - otherwise why weigh your fish and be a lier. Remember that a long time ago someone on TV was selling something with the name of "De-lier". And Cabelas is very misleading in their description of the scale. They state - " Scale weighs to the nearest ounce up to 50 lbs." The above is true but with a big BUT. The scale weighs up to 50lbs. The scale also weighs to the nearest ounce. Most people will think that the accuracy of the scale as it was described is accurate to +/- 1 ounce. Baloney. The scale will weigh and show up to 50lbs because the scale shows 2 digits for the pounds reading. And it will also show up to the nearest ounce because there is only 1 digit that the scale shows for the "ounce" readings. What they are telling you that it will not show you 1.7 ounces. That is all. They are not telling you that it is accurate within one ounce (+/-). If it were accurate to the +/- one ounce, it would be a bargain if it would last. carp-starter EDIT TO THIS POST DanC I use a frozen chicken to TEST my scale. The last time was about a week ago when I read a thread about scales and their accuracy. Thanks for your info. I will check the weight of Dominion chickens on their scales. Roy Scales = self gratification. People still weigh their fish? :-) You are correct. I do not carry a weight scale when I go fishing but I do carry a tape measure just in case it is a huge fish. Otherwise, who cares. I cannot remember ever using my weigh scale on a fish. But I do remember the last time I used my tape measure to weigh a fish. It was in 1984 when I caught my first steelhead - 26 inches.
  12. I have a Rapala 10 pound digital and I am very happy with it. I bought a 10lb and not a 50 ob because a 10 lb is more acurrate. There probably are better ones out there than what I have but I cannot afford to buy 2-3-4 other scales to compare. If I remember correctly, according to Rapala, the 10lb scale is supposed to be accurate to either +/- 2 ounce or +/- 4 ounces. I do know that the 50lb scale was +/- 8 ounces. In any case, I do not use my weigh scale often - I use a tape measure. I have tested my weigh scale against a known object the weight of which I know. The object has always been a frozen chicken bought at Dominion. RESULTS Everytime I weighed my frozen chickens, the scale showed 5 to 6 ounces LESS than the chicken weighed. This is good for me because if I use what the Rapala shows, no one can question me or my honesty. SOME SCALES READ HIGHER THAN THE ACTUAL WEIGHT OF THE OBJECT. I have used my scale more often to test it out than to weigh a fish I have caught. carp-starter COMPARSIONS BY WEIGHT the one shown by slow poke is accurate upto 200 grams which is 7.06 ounces. 2 ounces - 56.7 grams 4 ounces - 113.4 grams 5 ounces (as tested by me) - 141.75 grams 6 ounces (as tested by me) - 170.1 grams It seems that my Rapala is doing well and so I should say that I am now happy with mine. How many of you guys have tested your weigh scale?
  13. Good post. People need to be reminded. Things are getting bad all over on trout streams. Many streams have high temps. The West Branch Delaware started to have difficulties in May. It has been requested for some streams in Yellowstone Park that there be no day fishing between certain hours - if the desired results are not reached, the park rangers will start closing the streams. In Alberta, TU is asking that fishers stop fishing before the temp reaches 73.5F. Strange number to use when this 73.5F number is above the danger point for trout. If anything, the start of the danger point in temp is 72 degrees F. http://www.fudr.org/may07%20emergency.htm On the upper Grand according to Grand River Troutfitter (GRTF) , the water temps (GRTF report of Sep 4/7) in the 3 sections are 70F, 70F and 72F (in the lower section). But they were a lot higher not too many days ago. GRTF suggest that the lower section of the UG is fished only in the early morning. On Sep 6 & 7 I checked the GRTF site for their report and I think that fishing the lower section is now OK even though the temp was still 72F. http://www.grandrivertroutfitters.com/Rive...geriverinfo.htm - Click on “Conditions”. On July 19 according to Hook, Line and Sinker, the temps in the 3 sections on the Upper Grand were 71F, 73F and not fishable in the lower section. I have been waiting close to 90 days to fly fish the UG, UC or Whiteman's Creek. I have not because of high water temps. My so-called start of the danger point in temp for trout was 68 degrees F. Until this year, I would not fish when the temp was higher than 68F. This year I went up to 70F otherwise I would never be able to fly fish if I kept my danger temp point at 68F. But this summer, the temp has been at or above 70F most of the summer or I was not able to go fishing. Normally, the accepted danger temp is 72 degrees F. People fishing for brook trout should not fish if the water temp is above 68F. They need the colder water to survive. In tiny creeks, there should be no fishing because the water is too warm even in deeper pools. If there is an under ground spring, then perhaps the temp in that pool might be OK. Sticking a finger in the water is not good enough. But not many people go fishing with a thermometer in their vest. Try to use single barbless hooks even if the temp is OK. Also carry a thermometer – I always carry one in my vest. There is another thing fishers should be aware of. Many fishers will not fish when the temp is at or above the danger temp. Fishers will wait until it is cooler later in the day and as soon as the temp goes down one degree F into the acceptable temp range, they will fish. Fish in such situations will still feel as bad at 1 degree F below the danger temp as they were feeling at or above the danger temp. THEY NEED TIME TO RE-ADJUST FROM THE HIGH TEMPS. Probably 10 hours over night might allow the trout to re-adjust. So fish early in the morning if the temp is low enough. Just like humans, fish need a period of time to re-adjust at a cooler temp to feel normal. GRCA is not suggesting that we not fish all waters where the water levels are low and the temps are high. They would like us to not fish the waters that hold trout. It is not the low levels of water that is causing problems – it is the high temps of the water. Low levels of water simply warm up faster and remain at high dangerous temps for long periods of time. The upper Grand below the damn is shallow in most places. But it is OK because the water temp is cool. This is because of the water released from Belwood Lake. The water released from Belwood is cool because it comes from the bottom of the lake where it is the “coldest”. Trout are happy even in low water levels as long as certain criteria are met – cool water, flowing water, oxygenated water, good protection and a good supply of food. If the water temps remain high most of the year and year after year, the MNR will have to have certain C & R areas open to fishing all year. I see no problems. My 2 most favourite streams are the West Branch Ausable (near Wilmington, N.Y.) and North Branch Saranac (up stream from Clayburg, N.Y.) are open all year and there are no negative effects – in fact the fishing is getting better and better. These 2 streams are C & R, no bait streams. BUT TRY TELLING THE POWERS TO BE IN ONTARIO OF THESE FACTS. They probably would need 10 years to study the matter first. Having October and November open to C & R trout fishing areas would allow fishers for some trout fishing time – one would hope. No one in Ontario has the guts to do anything positive. If positive means closing down a stream, “CLOSE IT” until the temps go down. Who would complain? Most fly fishermen would not. Most spin fishermen also would not. And I think that baitcasters would not fish Whiteman’s Creek. So, the only people left are the poachers. In the mean time, for the last 3-4 weeks (on and off), I have been pinching the barb on my fly hooks to make them LEGALLY BARBLESS. Just over 3,500 fly hooks to go. Bill Parker, just like you, I am also doing a lot of hoping however, I have started to think about next year. My prediction for the UG is that the hatch will be in high gear starting on May 12 or 13 or 14 (2008). I am not telling anyone what to do. I have simply stated what I believe in and what I do and it is only my opinioin. carp-starter
  14. Amazing. In Japan they use the birds to their benefit. Here are PICS showing how. But here in Ontario, I say – get rid of them and $crew P3TA and all the good doers. I wonder why “friends of trees”, etc are not complaining about the damage the birds are doing. http://phototravels.net/japan/ukai-cormorant-fishing.html carp-starter

  18. I think it was yesterday that I saw a clip on the CBC that the cost of real estate up there is an average of $600,000.00. So I took a look. The first area I looked at was in SAPRAE CREEK area. I found 4 houses. The prices ranged from $763,658 (1602 sq feet, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms) to $1,089,000 (2595 sq feet, 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms). http://www.mls.ca/PropertyResults.aspx?Mod...p;ps=10&o=A At over ¾ of a million you get just 1602 square feet and 3 bedrooms. At this price, a lot more can be gotten in Oakville or Markham. I then looked for something cheap (I am sorry, I should have said – something cheaper). I found a 2 bedroom mobile home at only $334,900. This one has only 1 bathroom but a driveway good for 6 cars. With only 2 bedrooms, I guess they believe in 3 per bedroom. http://www.mls.ca/PropertyDetails.aspx?vd=...pertyID=6056624 Here is the main page of the MLS site. Take a look at it if you have nothing better to do. It is simply amazing. http://www.mls.ca/map.aspx?AreaID=6419 How can people afford so much? Is everyone well off and the only poor person is me? I looked for RENTALS but my search did not give me anything – maybe something is wrong with my PC. Any comments? carp-starter

  21. A long time ago there was a fishing TV program from B.C. The guy was Charlie White and he fished for salmon on an old boat. The program revolved around salmon fishing with down riggers and a video camera. On one program, the gang tested out various scent. They used commercial scent first. Some were better than others. I cannot remember how good they were. Then they used WD-40 and found out that it was better than the commercial scent they used. Finally they decided to test the junk in the bilge. Guess what? The junk from the bilge was a lot better than the other scent. I have Berkley bottles – 1 for bass, 1 for pike/muskie, 1 for trout and maybe one for walleye. I also have a bottle with floating silver flakes in the scent. I have never used it – I do not believe in it. Maybe I should start using scent on my dry flies instead of a floatant. And perhaps I might discover a “better” or “best” new floatant. carp-starter

  23. Interesting. But what would non-smokers do if all remaining smokers quit smoking at the same time? Would the non-smokers be happy? Oh, they will continue to b-i-tch but it will be for a different reason. Why? Because taxes will go up and up. We all know what government is like. If they are short of money, they simply increase taxes. Look what the city of Toronto tried just now. And McDink has been doing it for the last several years even though he promised not to increase taxes. All levels of government will feel the loss of cig tax money which will not be collected because no one will be smoking. And who will feel the most of the tax loss? The non-smokers - because they also will now pay what the smoker had been paying. And do not expect any decrease in health taxes. Very seldom does the government decrease taxes. But if they do, it will not come soon because it will take time for the smokers to get “healthy” before taxes can go down. Now we should all go after the food eating people who are catching up quickly to the smokers and are causing many health issues. I think that these people are called the OBESE or the “FAT ONES”. Oh well, the obese is another topic for the non-smokers to talk about. One thing is very obvious – there will always be something to b-i-tch about. If there were nothing to b-i-tch about, life would probably be boring. One has to factor in a certain percentage of the bad and accept this fact. And then life will be wonderful and more perfect. I have. Now I will go back and continue to de-barb my fly hooks cause I want to tie some new flies. De-barbing hooks is my area of whining right now. Oh poo, even in my semi-perfect life, I will b-i-tch. Remember, whining causes STRESS which is not good for you. carp-starter :wallbash:

  25. Just like jediangler, I would be a happy a camper if the temperature never got above 25C. So far it has been OK except for a 3 day period when it was over 31C and high humidity. Until July 26, the temp is to be below 25/26C. But the problem with next week is that the humidity will be high and so it will feel like 30 to 34C for the next 5 days. If it is a bit cool for some, you can always put something on. But when it is hot and humid, you cannot do much even when you are in the shade. carp-starter
