XEON – an excellent thread. I thank you for posting it. I think that most of us need a reminder especially at this time of year. All of the points you had stated are correct EXCEPT for perhaps points #6 and #10. I hope it is OK for me to make some comments because I will. #1 – using BARBLESS HOOKS is very important. This will do a lot of good for the fish no matter what size they are. It does not take much to do harm to a small trout. You can also unhook and continue to fish a lot quicker. Using barbless hooks is also a benefit to the fisher. If you fish for pike (or similar large fish) and you catch many during the summer, you will get trebles in your hand sooner or later and some of you know that it is difficult to remove barbed hooks out of your body – any part. Fishers should also replace their trebles with single hooks. Single barbless hooks do a lot of good for the fish. Also, it makes it a lot easier to land a fish. If you hook yourself, taking care of one hook is easier than a treble. #4 – I like to use the Rapala/Normark glove. Wet hands slip. I know nothing about wet cloth gloves. The Rapala glove does not slip. It also offers some protection for your hand when you are trying to land your fish. Between the years 1994 and 2001, I have caught many pike – a dime a dozen. During these years, I was into boating and so I was on my boat every weekend and holidays. Except for the marinas on the east side of Lake Simcoe, every marina had many pike. I have had more than a few pike go up in the air just before I was ready to grab the pike and have the hooks catch my glove on the way done. So the glove does protect your hand. Yes, I could use a net but I do not like to use one. #6 - use long-nose pliers to remove the hook quickly without injuring the fish. If the fish is hooked deeply, cut the line and leave the hook in. I do not agree with this. Once the pliers are used to remove a barbed hook from a deeply hooked fish, there will be more damage done to the fish. YOU MUST USE BARBLESS HOOKS INSTEAD. And make it single barbless hooks. I love single hooks and especially on a spoon. If the fish is hooked deeply, the pliers and cutting the line are not worth a pinch of coon sh-t. Both will do damage to the fish. If your hooks are BARBED, damage will always be done to the fish. There is a technique that will avoid all of the above cow poo but again, YOUR HOOKS MUST BE BARBLESS . And single is best because it is easier to work with one hook instead of treble hooks. One can buy this plastic tool that has a groove at both ends. It is about 8 inches long. I call it – “The DIS-GORGER”. Once I had seen a home-made dis-gorger. The length was longer than 8 inches, the grooves were smaller and the tool was thinner – it was made out of metal. You stick the tool into the fish. Place the groove against the hook in the gap area. Push the tool down while keeping the tool tight against the hook (by holding the fishing line). If your hook is barbless, the hook will come out of the meat. Now, keeping the tool tight against the hook, gently pull the whole thing out of the fish’s mouth. This will cause a lot less damage to the fish. In fact there may be no further damage done to the fish. If you are using barbed hooks, you will just pull out the insides of the fish. #10 – remember that if you stop and take a PIC of the fish (point #7), this fish becomes part of your daily keep limit because you have not released the fish immediately. But I have no idea why a fisher would be worried about point #10 because this thread is about Catch and Release and not what THE DAILY CATCH AND KEEP LIMIT IS FOR THE DAY. I have this negative thing about taking PICs of a fish unless it is a personal best (or close). If I were to show you guys 100 PICs of a pike or Grand River trout, I would say that most if not all of the pike would look the same. Ditto for the trout PICs. Unless something special takes place, one reaches a point in the life of you and your dog when one says – “it is about time I stopped taking frequent PICs of my dog.” Carp-starter

Canon has come out with a new camera. When I saw it on one of the UK fly tying message boards, I just fell in love with it. The name is - Canon PowerShot D10 Digital Camera - 12.1 mega pixels - $399.95. It is waterproof to 33 feet, freeze proof to -10 degrees C and shockproof to 3 feet. I have a Canon D80 and I like it a lot. But I am tempted to buy this D10. I would not have to keep the camera in double Ziploc bags. I would keep the D10 around my neck and when wading a stream fishing and be ready to take a PIC when the moment came up. No more Ziploc bags. Would not know what to do with my Canon D80 camera if I were to buy the new D10. Henry's is taking pre-orders and they are giving $20.00 off - I guess it is a sale. Here is the complete info from Vistek. Vistek provides the best documentaion on products - better than what the maker does. In this case, better than Canon. http://www.vistek.ca/store/DigitalCameras/...tal-camera.aspx Here is what the camera looks like - carp-starter

Two days ago when I was doing some computer cleaning, I found the following OFC thread from 2008. If any of the info is helpful, just take what you want. http://www.ofncommunity.com/forums/index.p...c=19155&hl= carp-starter -
..how can I add a few more pics? I have never posted a PIC the way you did and so I did not know how to do it. But I spend over an hour to find out how. I could post only 1 PIC. I then downsized the PICs and could post only 3 PICs. But I played around. Finally I see an error on the left side that stated – “Upload failed. The file was larger than the available space”. Eh, Dah. My brains sometimes are not between my ears. If you check on the left side, it will tell you that the limit is 250K. Your PIC is already at – 247.01k. But I guess you did not see the error message. I played around and found out some things. To post more PICs, you must downsize your PICs. If you have about 10 PICs, you will have to really downsize the PICs to the point that when you click on a PIC, it will pop-up as a very small PIC. I have always posted PICs using photobucket and the IMG option with the URL. So this is what your problem was – you must downsize a lot. But then do not forget that you should downsize your PICs if you use the IMG option instead. There is a problem for this method for the dial-up people like me. A good size would be at 640 X 480 – this is what I use. Good PIC. And happy that you had a good time there. Big Chute is a problem lock. Once, it took me about 3 hours to get through the Severn lock. At that time, same day, it was taking boats at least 6 hours to get through Big Chute – the lock cannot move too many boats at the same time – maybe 4 if you are extremely lucky. That day was a Monday of the long weekend in August. We had reservations at Driftwood Marina above Severn lock for a couple of days. lol Carp-starter – good luck

Of course Bell are crooks. Bell is a good example of how the rich become richer. Instead of taking from the rich and giving it to the poor, Bell takes away from the poor and gives it to the rich. Below is info for my Feb 2009 bill. “Your Bell Services” were - $31.29 Now what do you think the GST and PST should be? GST CALCULATION 31.29 x .08 = 2.5032 and after rounding, the amount should be $2.50. Instead, Bell charged me $2.51. PST CALCULATION 31.29 x .05 = 1.5645 and after rounding, the amount should be $1.56. Instead, Bell charged me $1.57. This has been going on since 2001 because I phoned Bell at that time. It was the year before I bought my computer in April 2002. Unless my calculations are incorrect, I would say that I am getting ripped-off. But, sometimes the rounding is correct because the amount has to be rounded up. When incorrect, I just phone them and they give me back a penny or two. I phoned them about 6 months ago and I got 24 pennies back. Am I doing my calculations wrong? One never knows, it could be me who is wrong. carp-starter

Thanks dannyboy for the hatch chart. When I read your post, you reminded me that I have 2 scanners - one 3 in 1 and the other a flatbed scanner. Until I read your post, it did not click that I could scan the 2 hatch charts that are in the above book - “Fly Fishing the Grand River: The angler's vest pocket guide”. So, here are the 2 hatch charts out of that book. carp-starter Edited: I had to take the images out.. the copyright holder complained. T.J.

Try to get the book “Fly Fishing the Grand River: The angler's vest pocket guide” - Spiral-bound by Jane E. Rutherford (Author), Ian D. Martin It appears to be out of print - it is "temporary unavailable at Chapters. But, I think that you would have a good chance of getting a copy - like a fly shop, maybe a small book store or from a web site address. First do a web search on the title of the book - "Fly Fishing the Grand River" and see what you will be able to find. Specifically - Grand River Troutfitters might have a copy, Grand River Guides, Grindstone Angling, Wilson’s in Toronto. Check with the "friends of the Grand River" - they sold it at one time. The above book will not tell you how to tie but it will tell you what is THERE to hatch. In some cases it will show you the fly to use for the hatch that is taking place. I have no favourites because there are so many good flies. carp-starter

There are eagles by the hundred in the Annapolis Valley. At one time there were not many, if any but a farmer thought of a way of bringing them in. Right now, it is a zoo down there. Here are some web sites that I have kept from the last few years. carp-starter Sheffield Mills Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia Search on SHEFFIELD MILLS EAGLE WATCH http://www.eaglens.ca/ http://www.annapolis-valley-vacation.com/eagle-watch.html http://www.outdoorns.com/features/flying.htm http://ca.maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?csz=S...&country=ca http://www.outdoorns.com/features/winteractivity11.htm http://www.gov.ns.ca/NATR/WILDLIFE/conserva/18-04-5.htm ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo http://museum.gov.ns.ca/mnh/nature/nsbirds/feat02.htm http://www.cbc.ca/thelens/program_261206.html HE BALD EAGLES OF NOVA SCOTIA About ten years ago, bald eagles in Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley discovered that many of the valley's large commercial chicken farmers were disposing of a few dead chicks each day by depositing them out in their fields. Each farmer has a natural mortality of one or two percent among the chickens, and with millions of chickens being raised in the area the bald eagles were quick to catch on. This bonanza of extra winter food began attracting hundreds of eagles that would normally spend their winters foraging along the Atlantic coast. The eagles began a daily circuit of the chicken farms, competing with each other for the new and easy source of food. Soon the word spread among birders, who came by the carload on weekends to witness the eagles. Before long, local people organized Eagle Weekend, an annual event in late January that has attracted thousands of people eager to watch eagles at close range. Now between 400 and 600 eagles are counted here each winter, and a few have stayed to nest. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2002/01/27/...agle020127.html

I smile and say certain words when I read some of these posts. A good one goes something like this as a reply to the OP. ==================================== I agree XYZ. ==================================== It amazes me that even though such a post requires a login, composing, sending the post, a logoff, I must assume the poster feels good and proud of posting the above 3 words. I see a number of reasons for posting this garbage. 1. It is to increase one's post count. Let's face facts, some of these guys enjoy seeing their count go up. It is a "trill" to them to see their number go up. 2. They are trying to lick XYZ'z as$. Statistically in any group, some are kinky. 3. Some have nothing better to do and so they must feel that they have done something productive for the day. 4. Some of the above in combination. I guess if there is more than one reason, there is more of a "thrill". carp-starter

Bought my ABU baitcaster in 1995 - ABU Garcia Pro Max, 3600. It is a very good reel. I have no complaints. It was made in Sweden. Also have 3 Gold Max spinning reels. Also no complaints. These were designed in Sweden but made in Korea. carp-starter

Surprise, surprise, amazing how many would spend $$ on gas to get something on sale where the price is already low in the first place. Then to find out that it is not available. I would not buy even split shot at CTC. But once in a while when I see a CTC ad of something that I should buy and at a good price, I buy it. I was going to rent a tree pruner this spring. I have a bad back and so I would have to rent it a number of times. On Oct 1/8 I saw a CTC ad for tree pruners - Fiskar, regular price was $69.99, sale price was $34.99, 1/2 off. So I went to the store on Oct 2/8 to buy one. They did not have it in stock. Lady SAID THAT NONE OF THE STORE HAD IT IN STOCK. So that was it for me - can't do much. But before I walked away, the lady said that I can get a "rain check" - first time for me. I was given the next delivery date. I phoned in a couple of weeks on the so-called new delivery date and there was none delivered. I would check online and the results were screwy. When online showed "in stock" the store had none. I kept checking on the delivery dates that I was given and every time they had none. On Jan 27/9 I checked the online and the pruners were in stock. Confirmed by phone and went the next day and bought it. It took me a bit of time but I have a good buy and it will be cheaper than renting one. Also, the price went up for 2009. There is someone here who wanted to buy a pair of Sorel boots. For boots, I think he could have gotten a rain check. I think one would not be able to get a rain check for items sold from a BIN. Get rain checks if you are serious in buying and it is worth a bit of a hassle. carp-starter

No, no not all will work for a spinning reel - like some one said "Those will work". The last one is useless for a spinning reel. It is only good for a baitcaster reel if used as in the PIC. If you use a spinning reel, you will get a lot of line twist. At $29.99USD, forget about the last one. The first one maight work for a spinning reel. It will work but only if the side of the spool faces your spinning reel. For $11.99USD, I would not buy it. The best one is the middle or 2nd one. The middle PIC shows you how the spool should face the reel. But there might be a problem in the PIC. The wrong side of the spool is facing the spinning reel. If you want to spend $11.99USD, go ahead. With this unit, I suggest that you attach the unit further up the rod just below the 2nd guide. Make sure that you have your line go thru the guide that is closest to the reel. With my right hand I reel in. With my left fingers I hold the rod with the line also going thru my fingers - this supplies needed tension. I do it the same way but I use a pencil or a wooden spoon - just stick either thru the hole in the spool. The rest will be the same setup as the writeup above for PIC #2. But I stick the pencil or the spoon between my two largest toes. Make sure that it is the front side of the spool that will be facing your spinning reel - otherwise you will have a twist. Just in case someone made a boo-boo somewhere, stop and see if you are getting a twist. If there is, just reverse the side of the spool that will now be facing your reel. The second gadget will get you as close to as what I do but without any gadgets - just a pencil or a wooden spoon. carp-starter

I thank you all for your info. After a short snooze, I was able to keep my eyes open. I used the easiest way - to me - and I used muddler's method (right click on AVG Icon and then click on 'Exit' then ... press yes). Some of the solutions I read on the Net were simply out of this world. Tomorrow, I will scan my first slide and see the first results - too tired right now. I bought the scanner to digitize my slides. I doubt it very much if I find even one PIC relating to fishing. Thanx - carp-starter muddler Are you using Windows Xp? If you are, maybe this is the reason why you did not get the message that I got. I have Vista. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I bought an Epson V500 flatbed scanner. All looks OK and I thought that everything was going to go smoothly. But when I got to install the Epson software, I was informed -- "Please disable any anti-virus software before continuing this installation". I looked but I could not any info as to how disable AVG. I do not know how to disable AVG temporarily. I could delete AVG and then re-install but because I have dial-up, it would take me over 3 hours. Can anyone help me - my installation of the Epson software has stopped. In the mean time, I will keep on looking on the net. Thank you every one. carp-starter EDITED AND ADDED --- I have Windows Vista.... AVG version is -- AVG Free 8.0 I hope it is a simple explanation or else I might get lost EDITED AND ADDED I have decided to delete AVG and then re-install AVG. It will take time but it will be the simplest way. In any case, I will have some sleep because I have not slept in 33 hours - I almost fell out of my chair here - lol - I have done it more than a few times before. I thank you for your help guys.

You are correct Lostchild - I decreased the size of my characters and I can see the "logout" icon. I thank you for your solution. Mine was a "fix" but I love solutions better. carp-starter

If you have no problem but simply cannot find the ICON (Logout), all you have to do is find the Logout icon - "Logged in as: carp-starter (Log Out)". This is what the others have said in their post. But, if you have what I have - you have a problem because the logout icon is covered or hidden by other information that is on the page. What I am saying is that in my case the logout icon is not visible to me. On top of the page are the PIC of the loon, the letters OFC Community and the bar with icons. Sometimes I see part the loon and sometimes I do not see the loon. The big OFC letters are partially visible - only the top 1/2 are visible because the bottom part is covered by the bar of icons - blog, gallery, live chat and etc. I do not see the big letters "Community" because they are gone.. I have found a way so that the "logout" icon is visible for me so that I could logoff. I changed the theme to the Xmas version. Now I can see the words "logout" - Logged in as: carp-starter ( Log Out ). Go to the bottom left hand side in the thread and click on the icon so that it is - "OFC Xmas". Now your logout icon should be visible for you to logout. The top part of the page is still screwed up but at least I have my logout icon. I have Vista and I am using Firefox. I went to http://www.ofncommunity.com/forums/ using Internet Explorer and AOL and I see no problems - everything appears as it should be. But I did not login. Maybe for me, the error exists only when using when I use Firefox. carp-starter -

I know what you are saying - I feel rotten right now and I thought it was Saturday morning. I did not get a flu shot. I have read in one of the newspapers that more people will get the flu this year. The reason is that the strength of the flu shots this year is lower than it should be. What can I say - you see "down sizing" every where. carp-starter

Where can i buy parts for my abu garcia reels?

When you say "local store", I am assuming you mean the Ottawa-Hull area and not Toronto. For this area, I suggest that you can find out from the people on Fish-Hawk fishing forums web site below. Fish-hawk covers the Ottawa-Hull area and they will give you the info. http://www.fish-hawk.net/hawktalk/ Just in case, here is a web address in the Toronto GTA. kemper, I am curious as to what rod and reel you are using. How long is the rod and what pound test are you using? And which reel are you using with the rod. Thanks a lot - carp-starter PS:- Those are excellent fish that you caught

Thank you TomD. I believe that they are the same - PANASONIC BQ390 NIMH CHGR 4/AA-R2TECHN I will get another pack because $20.00 off the regular price of $59.99 sounds good. But I will wait till Monday and check the eNewsletter (e-mail) at 11am to find out which Panasonic (with charger) set of batteries are being offered at $30.00 off the regular price. If they are the same batteries, then the price will be $29.99 (10 more dollars off). But I would have to wait till Monday at 11.00am to find out. If anyone wants a copy of that eNewsletter from Henrys, PM me and give me an e-mail address so that I could send to you the complete e-mail. 50% off is not bad on a set of Panasonic batteries and a charger. carp-starter - thank you
