  1. Are you using it in ice fishing mode? I don't own one but the consensus seems to be that it works better in deeper water when the ice fishing mode is NOT selected.
  2. Thanks for bringing that up! LOL Yeah, a good sized Simcoe fish spooled me with a 500 reel...ran straight to bottom then kept on going horizontally along bottom like a freight train and SNAP! As others have said, 1000 minimum but if you are going to encounter big fish in deep water then a 2500 is a better choice.
  3. An interactive map with fish species and stocking if applicable. http://www.web2.mnr.gov.on.ca/fish_online/fishing/fishingExplorer_en.html You can also check stocking lists for the area: http://www.muskokawaterweb.ca/lake-data/mnr-data/fish-stocking http://www.hhoa.on.ca/fish-stocking.html
  4. Have a look on Kijiji for used float reels...lot's of entry level float reels for around $100 or so. http://ontario.kijiji.ca/f-float-reel-Classifieds-W0QQKeywordZfloatQ20reel
  5. Similar to what has already been stated, Nikwax or Revivex. Personally I've had the best luck with Nikwak wash-in products. I first clean with this: http://www.mec.ca/product/4004-475/nikwax-tech-wash-cleaner/?f=10+50544 Then waterproof with this: http://www.mec.ca/product/4003-388/nikwax-tx-direct-wash-in-waterproofer/?f=10+50544 I just treated my Simms G4 jacket before this trip and it stood up all day to heavy rains without wetting-out!
  6. I wouldn't bother, just grab some Spider Thread...give the bag about a dozen wraps, pull tight to cinch it and then break it off and you are done. You can find it in almost any tackle shop, Canadian Tire etc. http://www.redwingtackle.com/
  7. I definitely wouldn't. I cure and freeze in small portions that I'll thaw and will use in a short period of time.
  8. Most anglers cure roe so that it doesn't come out of the freezer as a goopy mess that is difficult to tie (curing pulls some/most of the moisture out of the eggs and toughens the outer membrane) and to extend it's "shelf life" when it's not frozen. That said, if you get out enough to use up your supply without it spoiling then there's no need to cure. Loose roe (after it's been water hardened) will stand up better to being thawed after it's been frozen than will scraped skein but it still doesn't last long unfrozen before it spoils if uncured.
  9. Milk Snake. Seem to be a lot around this year.
  10. That ruling was by the Ontario Superior Court and is in relation to the provicial forestry act so it will set precedent province wide where shared trees are concerned. As the article states, many municipal by-laws will need to be re-written as a result ie ones that allow people to cut branches without permission on their side of the property line.
  11. Some pretty incredible pictures here: http://storify.com/blogto/toronto-weather-gets-wet-and-wild
  12. Solid Browns! The GTAA stocks Browns in Georgian Bay...the likely source of these fish. http://www.georgianfishing.ca/about.html
  13. The adults have two tails. Hexagenia limbata.
  14. A bit north of Zone 17 but here's the list for the Brancroft area. http://home.cogeco.ca/~sparkysfishin/Stock%20Lists/Bancroft%20-%20Mazinaw%202009%20-%202012.pdf
  15. I'm confused...I can't find Nunyer Creek on any maps???
  16. Heh...thanks Rizzo...good to know! Maybe I'll start going there again LOL!
  17. Whenever I've gone into the basement of that place, I have this fear that I'm going to wind up like Bruce Willis' character in "The Gimp" scene of Pulp Fiction LOL.
  18. Ron has it right...it's an American Toad. Spring Peepers' calls are much shorter.
  19. I have a 5wt TFO BVK as my smaller/medium river streamer rod for Trout and absolutely love it. As Wiser mentions, the BVK consistently rates quite well in rod shoot-outs vs other sticks that are 2,3 even 4X the price of the BVK.
  20. He's describing how to make a tapered leader by stepping down heavier line to lighter line. Personally, I'm happy to spend the few bucks on knotless tapered leaders (especially that come with a pre-tied loop on the end to attach directly to the end of your fly line)...no fiddling around with tying 3 knots or more per leader.
  21. No, the road is closed during the winter...snowmobiles only. http://www.algonquinhighlands.ca/?cat=trails&page=notices
  22. I was in the general area today (north shore, Oro) and walking is great...snow on the ice is firm, no slush so covering distance was easy.
  23. Rogers has it in HD (Channel 542)...also free this month.
  24. Corliss almost died himself last year. Warning, the video is a bit graphic.
