  1. When I read the title of your post, I was hoping that the "low" didn't mean that the cancer had returned. All the best with your fight Mike.
  2. When you see fish on your screen, suspend your bait just above them. If one is interested and starts to rise for it to investigate start reeling away fairly quickly and don't stop until it hits or breaks off the chase. Some fish will follow for 20, 30 or even 40' before hitting. If a fish breaks off a chase you can often get another shot at it by dropping your bait down again to where the fish is and see if you can get it to chase again. Some days fish just aren't all that interested and few will give chase and even fewer will actually hit (yesterday seemed to be one of those for most).
  3. The ice is in great shape in deep water areas...about 8-9", no slush except near pressure cracks. The snow is incredibly deep though, we saw multiple ATVs stuck and people on foot weren't getting far before they were exhausted. With warm temperatures on tap over the next two days, it'll be a real mess out there.
  4. "Thanks to procreation, my partner in crime Davey hasn't been able to get out much." LMAO! Ain't that the truth! I'll be taking care of that soon...snip! Yipes! That was honestly the most fun I've had in a while, it's always great to get out with you bud! Thanks again for going through the trouble of grabbing your sled, it was definitely key to getting on the fish that day!
  5. Allen reels are an amazing bargain. They are blowing out the Alpha II's and the new Alpha III's are in your price range. http://www.allenflyfishing.com/reels/
  6. X2 on making your own bracket. The disposable latern batteries get expensive in the long-run...you can buy 6V rechargeable batteries from most hobby stores, involves some simple wiring work though. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to know how to convert to the rechargeables as I have step-wise pics (generously sent to me by another member on this site). Look for this type of battery or similar... http://www.amazon.com/4-5H-Lead-Acid-Rechargeable-Battery/dp/B000FCRUH4
  7. Awesome video...kudos to you for actually showing the technique in detail!
  8. Definitely...I never set foot on the ice for Brookies without bringing worms! You don't always need them but more often than not, they save the day!

  10. Yep, everything posted there is real!!! Here's another disturbing video...I filmed this personally while on vacation a few years ago!
  11. If you like Mooseknuckle jackets etc, this song is for you!
  12. Exactly. That fish was worse than flossed, it was snagged in the tail. At around 1:20 you can see the tail lift as he raises the rod. This guy has been roasted up and down on many forums for his supposed "catch".
  13. Send me a PM...as I mentioned to you previously, my clients are environmental consultants and they often ask me if I know anyone that is looking.
  14. ^ X3. We've had the same boat (Ungava with a 20hp Merc 2-stroke) at our cottage on Lake Huron (Point Clark area) for 20 years and it has served us well for a variety of uses from water skiing/tubing for kids to fishing for Bass and Perch. As you mentioned it has a much wider beam than most boats that size and as a result it is a very stable boat and can handle conditions that other boats of that size could not. As many others have said, be mindful of the weather and be safe.
  15. We definitely need aggregates for construction, infrastructure etc but the proposed quarry was not the way to do it espeically when the aquifer of key headwater rivers could have been severely impacted. Thankfully responsible aggregate taking is gaining momentum so that this resource can be exploited without it coming at an unacceptable environmental cost. http://www.newswire.ca/en/story/800009/momentum-continues-to-grow-for-socially-and-environmentally-responsible-aggregates-sera
  16. Some Huron/GB tribs are listed on pages 2 and 3 here. http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/stdprodconsume/groups/lr/@mnr/@letsfish/documents/document/mnr_e001335.pdf Others have specific maps that outline the extended/year-round seasons: http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/LetsFish/2ColumnSubPage/198482.html
  17. I'm a member of the Nottawasaga Steelheaders and this group often organizes obstruction removals. Permission from various agencies is usually required for this...from the conservation authority, sometimes right up to federal levels ie the DFO. I'll send you a PM so we can talk in detail - I'll forward your concern to the group. It's quite possible that they know about it already.
  18. Pike, Walleye...anything that's open until the end of Nov.
  19. Yes, you can fish for Bass up until the end of November in Algonquin.
  20. You are indeed correct...it's a hybrid ie Brown/Brook Trout cross...known as a Tiger Trout. A very cool catch as naturally produced specimens are relatively rare!
  21. Mike, If you don't want to break the bank, see if you can track down an old 13' St. Croix Avid (not the current line). I have one and use it for the odd time I fish for Kings in estuaries but it primarily sees duty as my big water/big fish rod.
  22. The short answer is no. It depends on the source of the vermiculite itself...the vermiculite that *may* contain asbestos orginated from a mine in Libby Montana and was sold as "Zonolite" in Canada. Other asbestos free sources may have also been used such as from South Africa. More info. BTW, to the original poster Pinchin can test your samples for asbestos. http://www.pinchin.com/homeowners/zai-vermiculite
  23. That was good fun bud. I was happy to be chase boat pilot/net man/photographer for that one!
