  1. Jane and the 401 is your best bet but they overcharge and give you exactly 12 minnows. Use the extra gas and go to the place on the 400 and Rutherford.
  2. Those crazy lake trout. Never know what they'll get up to next.
  3. I hear frenchmans bay used to be pretty good but it gets tons of pressure now.
  4. For everyone on our forum I would say it's the highlight of the show. I wish that part were bigger.
  5. A friend of mine, when she was younger was in a rubber dingy and hooked into something big. She ended up bringing in a nice big pike but couldn't get it unhooked. It was thrashing around so much it scared her. So she kept the fish in the boat and swam back to shore.
  6. I went with my then girlfriend back in October. $30 a ticket is a little expensive but it was amazing. I loved that I was able to see long nose gar and paddlefish, they have an area you can pet sharks, manta rays and horseshoe crabs. I'd say everyone has to go at least once.
  7. This is such a tease. Staying in Cold Lake for 2 weeks at a B n B directly across from the marina. I can see huts less then a km off shore, and I'm going to have no time to get out. *jerk*

Jeremy you just cant catch a break lolololol

  8. If anyone knows renters that allow solo rentals please let me know, I imagine a reservation for $40 is probably frowned upon when they charge by the person and not by the hut.
  9. Pike are my favourite to ice fish for because you don't really need sonar. Set a tip up or a tip down with a good sized minnow (4-5 inches) about a foot off the bottom, relax, talk with buddies and wait for those flags to fly.
  10. When I bring friends out who have never been ice fishing before I take em to Terry Goy in Cooks bay. One of my closest buddies has a girlfriend who never had any interest in fishing, never wanted to go never wanted to hear about it. I have no idea how he convinced her but we were able to get her to come out once. I set her up with my St. Croix Legend rod (the one with the spring bobber on the tip) and my Flasher and set her up in one of Mr. Goy's huts, I also mentioned the last time we went out, the record number of perch in a day was 50 set by my ex-girlfriend. Within minutes she was pulling up perch (only 4-6 inches) by the bucketful and having a blast. She brought her laptop and sketchpad and never used them once. A few days after the excursion she asked if we could go back there next week....... never expected to hear that before. In summary, Cooks, Terry Goy, small bait and minnows and your friend will be hooked for life on ice fishing.
  11. Look at the gut on that Ling. You can tell its spent most winter on the couch drinking beer and watching the hockey games.
  12. Flight is canceled. Stuck in Toronto a little longer..... it could be worse.

Flight canceled until Friday. This is the fishing gods giving me my sign to get out on the hard water one more time.

Wish we could get out but it doesn't look like I'll be free until Monday. Good luck if you get out, otherwise have a safe flight back!

  13. Free shipping. Nothing more to pay for. Enjoy. They are kinda fun and pretty addictive.
  14. If I get back before the season is up (I live in Edmonton right now). We could always meet up on the ice and swap techniques. 2 heads (and 4 lines) are better then 1.
  15. Its tough to say exactly. In 3 years of ice fishing, sometimes I still have no idea what the fish are thinking. Trying to pick up their moods can be like trying to figure out if a blind date is interested in you. Here are some tips I would try for your next outing (Keep in mind, none of these may work, I'm still very new to this) 1) Set a few tip ups up right near the bottom, if you have a few people, set one up right on the bottom, then a foot off, two feet off, 5 feet etc. That will get the lazy or lethargic fish. 2) Try changing up the size of your offering. This time of the year, Lake Trout will hit just about anything but there is a chance you may have been dueling Whitefish or perch. They may have had interest but may not have been able to take in what you are offering. If I'm in a nice warm hut, I'll try just about every size, shape and colour in my tacklebox until I find something that works. You already did the hard part in finding the fish. It can only be so long until they take. 3) Try various retrieval speeds. If when you marked a fish, you were reeling in super fast and the fish would follow and then change their minds, slow it down. Or Jig and pause, jig and pause all the way up to the surface. It can be maddening sometimes to draw fish in and then have them not hit, but for me that's all the fun. Trying to get into a fish's mind and figure out what its thinking. Good luck in the future. Sounds like you still had a pretty good time once you got out regardless.
  16. I just set the gauntlet for my good friend Dynamic_Bear. He turns 30 on December 5 2014 so I presented him with the 30 before 30 challenge. Easy: Fish 30 different lakes. (can use lakes he has fished before 2014) Medium: This year catch 30 fish, either sport fish of any size or non-sport over 12 inches. Hard: Catch 30 different species of fish. Angling only. (Can use species he has caught before 2014)
  17. I'm glad and I wish this has happened sooner, Dean was sexist, racist and homophobic. Despite the fact that he claimed he was all for gay rights he would often comment on new reports or stories with "If you ______ then you're gay." In an derogatory tone. After Jason Barr left I started listening to him and Chris Biggs on 97.7. Their self depreciation humor is much more enjoyable.
  18. Fun fact: You catch more fish when you use dance moves. Shake and pop, shake, shake and pop.

My milkshake brings all the fish to the yard.

  19. Best thing to do in Gilford IMO is if you are with a buddy or if your kids are old enough, drop them off at the boat launch with the gear, park the car and walk back. Then when you pick them up, go get the car first while they wait with the gear. Saves a lot of time and sore legs (I run marathons so the extra walking is good for me)
  20. Bigger lake trout Longnose gar Get better at ice fishing Catch a fish at the Toronto Islands. Get out fishing more (this is a resolution every year regardless of how much I fish previous)
  21. Almost met him a few years ago when I worked for the city but the day he was supposed to come out it was 50+ with the humidity. I think he would have melted.
  22. Bring on the lake trout!

  23. Barry from storage wars. He seems like my kinda kook. Though the Gord Pizer ice fishing idea sounds great.
  24. Go for Goy. A great stand up guy and he always puts the huts on a pile of perch. $40 per person for the full day.
  25. Just put the lures in. It took a tiny bit of paint off one of my raps and spoons but it was pretty soft. If you have the time, take the hooks off, if not you should be ok.
