Brutal ice fishing weather ahead for southern ontario
Sinker replied to cityfisher's topic in General Discussion
It will only make the ice better, no worries. I bet by next weekend, we have more ice than we do now. S. -
Dabluz knows his stuff!! I grew up snaring rabbits too. Everything he wrote there is bang on, you can pretty much follow that to a T. I like to suspend them from the top too. I've seen rabbits push a snare to the side of the trail to avoid it, but when its hanging from above, you seem to have more success. A cold, clear, windless night is the best. Look for a natural funnel to set the snare in, too much altering thier trail and they will go around it, jump over it, or stop using the trail all together. Try not to step on thier path at all if possible. The trick about pulling the wire around a branch to make it round and remove scent is the way to do it. Check them EVERY day, and make sure you know EXACTLY how many you have out, and EXACTLY where you put them. Make sure the snare is fastened to something solid. Those snowshoes will tear the place up, and drag a branch a long ways. The one in your set could be missing in the morning. The guy who is snaring rabbits in Windsor should be reported to the MNR. I would even get the cops involved in a case like that. If my dog got caught in a poachers snare, rest assured, I"d be waiting there until he came to retreive his rabbits with the cops or a CO. Take pics of his sets, or even wait and get his plate #. Rabbit #'s are low enough in southern ontario, we don't need some poacher taking them illegally!!! I wish I could snare them around here!!! I'd really like to see your results. Its kinda like snaring rabbits vicariously through you S.

There is nothing in that link about snaring rabbits. I have never heard of a limit on the # of snares you can set out. Just make sure you check them EVERY day. I wish I could snare them down here........not only is it illegal, but there are no freakin rabbits left!!!! Good luck, and post pics of your success!!! S.

You need to go fishin Rick!! I've had a cold for two weeks now. Last week I fished hard two days, and I've got all my gear ready to fish the next two days too!!! It really makes you feel better once your out there!! You do fish, right??? HI Roy I do miss the chat. We have some good fun in there on tuesday nights!!! S.

I smoke more when I fish, than I normally do. I catch fish, so I don't think it makes any difference. Presentation will out fish scent every day of the week. S.

Most of my hardcore fishing buds couldn't even turn a computer on, let along post a report I haven't tried any lakes but scugug. We've been putting a hurting on the crappies lately, but not many eyes yet. I'll find them though, I always do I think a little later in the season is going to be killer on the slabs. I have a few spots on pigeon I think would be killer, but I won't know unless I go. S.

Great read dude!! Friggen exciting eh I never did land one, but we had a lot of action too. Just reading your report got my heart racing again....what a rush!!! S.

Yep, I'd say you need new blades. I bet with new ones, you'd find a big difference. I use nothing but an 8" hand auger, and I can drill a hole faster than a power auger. Just one hole mind you, when you get into more than one, the gas auger smokes me..... LOL. A 6" is a lot less work, but I like a bigger hole. They don't freeze up as quick, and you don't lose as many fish at the hole. Anyways, good fishing boys. Glad ya's got into a few. Now you've got the bug for sure. Before ya know it, you'll be out on simcoe hauling lakers and whities S.

Whats the first thing ya do once your all set up??

Guys are catching panfish in the kawartha's, they're just keeping it under wraps. Don't ask me how I know this Cliff, I just started really getting into crappies on Sturgeon this past year. Up until then, it was just one here and there. Give it a season or two, and it will be loaded with them, just like all the rest of the lakes. The crappies we were getting out of there this spring were some of the biggest ones I've caught, and there were a lot of them. Let those big guys breed a new batch, and we'll have crappies coming out our ears in a couple years.........I have no doubts!! I hear the bald lakes are killing the crappies right now, and my buddy on rice caught over 200 perch this weekend too. They're out there, and people are getting them. I know if I did find them, I wouldn't post it here!!!! Sturgeon would also be my last choice for panfish. I just don't generally do well on them in that lake. Musky and eyes is a whole different story!! As long as your out having fun trying, who cares what your catching!!! S.

I just have to get outdoors.........no matter what the season is. Icefishing is a very social day. Its not like being in a boat with a few buds, you can get out with a huge group, and all fish together. You also don't need a lot of gear in most cases, so its easier for some people to get out on the ice, than on the water. S.

Good fishing. Buck should replace that knife, no problem. S.

So, the duck season is over, its back to fishing. A week ago Thursday I headed to quinte with Buckster and another friend of mine. Once I got to the access, I realized I'd forgotten my floater suit! Luckily my wife is such a great sport, and it was her day off, so she went for a nice drive and dropped it off to me. God love her!! I got off to a late start. Hit up a few of my favorite waypoints, but it was a light bite. We hooked quite a few fish, but only managed to land two. they would show up on the screen, chase the bait up and hit it, but just peel off your minnows. Between three of us, we must have hooked into a dozen fish, with only two put on the ice. Here’s the one I did land, 25.5" and close to 7lbs. Buckster also got in on the action with one about 2-3lbs. We headed off just after this beauty sunset. Last week on wed I hit the south shore of simcoe out of JP, no fish. I lost one fish in the two feet of slush under the ice and that was it. This was more of a recon trip than anything else. The ice was a mess, all pack ice, with slush underneath. We didn’t move around much, and got a late start. I marked quite a few fish, but not many takers. The next day I fished scugog with a good buddy. Our usual hot spot hasn't been producing, so we picked a few good looking waypoints off the map, and started a new search, in a new area of the lake. As soon as I got my line in I hit a good slab, then another, and another. Next fish was a good whack, weight, hook set......ZZZZZZZZZ.......what the hell? First lunge of '10. I was lucky it was just hooked on the tip of the snout, because I was only running 4lb line, with a tiny little forage minnow. After a good battle on the light gear, I got his head in the hole. Pretty little fish, about 32" I took home half a dozen slabs for a little taster. My buddy also took 7 slabs, and a nice pair of eyes. Tonight my son and I headed back to the same waypoint me and my bud fished on Thursday. The guys had dragged the hut to the honey hole, so we had comfort and warmth. I drilled 4 holes, and started setting lines. I got Jacob’s jigging rod going first, and before I got to the second line, he’d already iced a nice slab……..then another as soon as it went back down again. First two drops of the day! He was a happy camper! I’ll never hear the end of how he “outfished” Dad. Little does he know, he had the best guide on the lake. (wink) I spent more time baiting his lines than fishing, but that's what its all about!!! We ended up keeping 15 crappies and a nice eater walleye for a fish fry, and released at least that many more crappies, a few rock bass, and one smallmouth. It was a fun evening with the young lad, he had a blast! I’m not sure what to do this week. So many lakes, so close by, its hard to choose!!! I'll be out wed/thurs though for sure!! Its great to be back to fishing, its been a while!! S.

I used to fish caribou out of Brooks cottages, but haven't been up for quite a few years. I think we were the first ones to ever rent one of thier cottages in the winter. Since then, they've winterized most of thier cabins, and even supply huts from what I hear. Back in the day, the fishing was awesome. We used to haul lakers and eyes out of the same holes. My brother caught a 19lb pike once too! There is a shoal, which I'm sure they will show you, to the west of the islands off the point. Find 60-70FOW and jig, you'll get fish there. I'm pretty sure they still stock the lake with eyes. Are you sure the ice is good up there? I know caribou is the last lake in the area to freeze up safe. S.

How much does that boat weigh?

Holy, there must have been millions down there for you to get that many!!! Looks like a fun day! S.

Why is it that people have to resort to calling the cops in a simple situation like this? Just go talk to the guy, he's probably a decent fellow (most fisherpeople are), and will understand where your coming from. Explain the issue, and come up with a comprimise. There's really no need to be putting up those ugly signs, and calling in the authorities. It just makes you look like an ass. He's probably under the impression, that if nobody says anything, there is no problem. I'm sure if you talk to him face to face, he'd understand, and come up with a better place to park. If he shows up on the weekend with a bunch of buddies, go join in on the fun. Don't be so anti social! If I lived on a lake, and some dude put a hut out front of my place, you can bet I'd be out there shooting the bull with him, and dropping a line. Heck, you might even make a new fishin buddy out of it. Society is going to pot these days. It blows my mind. S.

I can listen to those tunes all day long. Throw in some Neil Young, and we're rockin! S.
-
Well, I can tell you where the fish aren't!

Yep, go deep Cliff. Have you tried Sturgeon point yet? Even pleasant point should have some fish. At least your having fun trying. Can't beat fishing in your back yard, your lucky that way!! S. -
We break our trails with Alpines, then pull groomers on them with Yamaha VK's. The alpines will go anywhere, and the VK's will drag anything. No problems with any of them. S.
-
It will be fine. Below zero at night will freeze anything that thaws during the day. Just be careful coming off in the afternoon around shore. I'm sure some bozo will put a car or something thru the access this weekend. S.

What are the 3 barrels? $300 is fair, as long as one of the barrels is a cantilevered rifled barrel, one is a turkey barrel, and the other is a smoothbore shot barrel. S.
