  1. That reminds me of this old joke, one of my favourites! "Chretien's 'at" joke Prime Minister Jean Chretien was meeting with officials in Flin Flon, Manitoba. It was a very hot day and the ceremonies took place outside in a local grandstand. The Mayor was surprised to see that Chretien was wearing a large fox fur hat, despite the heat. After a while the mayor leaned over and spoke up. "Excuse me, Mr. Prime Minister, but I can't help wondering why you are wearing that fox hat when it is so warm?" Chretien shrugged. "Well, you know 'ow it is", he replied. "My wife, she is da dresser in da family, so I always take 'er advice. If I go to de Maritime, she say 'Wear da toque'. If I go to Calgaree, she say 'Wear da stetson'. Dis time she ask me where I go; I say Flin Flon. She say 'Flin Flon! Where the fock's 'at ?' So I did!"

  2. That rig is completely amphibious (like an Argo), all wheel drive (like an Argo), but the rear tires especially provide more power in water than an Argo's wheels do. The chassis is all aluminum and can be raised and lowered by hydraulics. There are four holes in the floor for fishing, a superstructure very much like a pull-over ice hut, and an after-market diesel heater that keeps things toasty inside. (Way too toasty for my liking, but I was a guest.) One can ice fish without stepping out of the rig for anything. It is a VERY neat rig. Doug

  3. I think I know whose it was.........and what a coincidence, I opened up this thread to talk about it. I was out in it today, and YES it does pull itself back up on the ice when it breaks through. We did that twice today. 😲 The ice was a bit sketchy........ Doug

  6. Hi all, The day after our shallow water walleye trip , Rich wanted to go for crappie, took him to a little spot I know and we caught enough for supper and a limit for him to take back to the US the next day.

  7. I agree, a quality rod is more important than a quality reel, especially for walleye and bass. But it is nice to hold a piece of quality (reel) in your hand..lol

  9. I beg to disagree, there are situations where you're better off spending the money on a quality rod, rather than on a quality reel. If you're throwing a reaction type bait like a crankbait or spoon.. the rod doesn't really matter that much, other than having enough backbone to toss the lure and enough flexibility to keep the fish pinned. However, with something like a finesse bottom-contact presentation, say a drop shot or a jig, a decent rod will absolutely make a difference in putting more fish in the net. A good rod will not only let you feel the lightest of nibbles, but also the bottom composition (mud, sand, rock, etc). The reel in this case is just basically a line holder. Ugly Sticks are designed to be indestructible not sensitive. As an example...even a mid-priced rod like a 7ft med Fenwick HMG weighs less than 5 oz. A 7ft med Ugly Stick weighs over 8 oz. Simple physics tells you which rod is more sensitive. Must admit they're great rods if you're in the habit trying to break 'em...

  11. I keep bird feeders on the front lawn in the winter and there's always a few squirrels hanging around it to grab whatever falls on the ground. I just happened to be looking out the window watching the birds a couple years back and saw a fox sneaking up the driveway and when he got 20' from the squirrels he turned on the afterburners and covered the 20' in a couple jumps and grabbed a squirrel from behind and shook him hard and that was it. He grabbed that little squirrel and killed him so fast he didn't know what hit him.

  12. Yeah, my neighbour Bob’s Ranger is pretty luxurious, heated leather seats, air con etc…etc. Bob and Rich have cabins in the area. I said I hadn’t fished that lake before but I actually have, in a boat, we had to hand bomb a 14’ tinny 1/2 mile downhill to get in there, we did better on the ice lol.

  18. I caught a 20lb Muskie through the ice on a pickerel line (8lb). I was laughing the whole time because it looked huge through the hole and I didn’t think I could land it. I did land it but no pic. one time I took Billy fishing on simcoe. He shows up and I start laughing. He’s got a tip up with 30lb line. He says there’s some big fish in here. After a while he hooks a beast and instead of paying out some line he just holds tight. He’s hand bent right down to the water before the line broke. lol.

  19. Looks like the west side of Simcoe (which being shallower usually has more ice) is iffy too. https://www.durhamradionews.com/archives/17989777 This has always been the weekend (weekend before the Super Bowl) I host an "Ice Fishing Jam" at my cottage. I invite a bunch of buddies to stare down holes during the day and stare at cards at night...lots of food and refreshments included. However, as of this week a crack in the ice on my lake has slowly widened to the point that there's now a large stretch of open water right by our prime Crappie and Walleye spot. Not that there was much ice to begin with. So we cancelled...first time in 30 years ! I stayed in town and went out to the pier this morning with my feet firmly planted on terra firma. Kept a bright one for the smoker. One of the benefits of this shytty ice year is that I have yet to put away the long rods...and frankly in a lot of ways it's a lot more fun than pulling them up through a hole..
