  3. It begs the question as well as to why do people drive cars on a track at 300 MPH? Climb mountains, wind surf on Lake Erie in ice cold water in November and December when the winds are 130KPH, and, and, and? If that windsurfer or mountain climber needs to be rescued a discussion as far as who pays may start. Actually back country downhill skiers and snow boarders are being charged for rescues out west now depending on circumstances. That topic comes up here once in a while. When I see a reporter from news agencies standing next to the ocean in a 100 MPH plus Hurricane to show people sitting on the couch what a Hurricane looks like then I really shake my head. That is just ignorant. A person with a semblance of intelligence that does stupid things is ignorant. Ice fishing is neither stupid nor ignorant. If one decides to take a risk and fish on 1" ice well then I have to question their intelligence and or decision making. Last time we went to Quinte I found we were going to fish on 1 or 2 inches ice. I spent the day in the mall and in the motel room watching fishing shows. My 2 fishing partners did stay on the ice, their choice. That night and next morning it was brutally cold and had a good 4", I fished then. Yep got the Skunk eye and had 2 Mickey D's Fillet O Fish sangwidges on the way home.

  5. This is a typical setup for the regular pier fishing group that I fish with, the ring and screws are hard to find around here, there aren't a lot of hardware stores around the beach and Wall-mart doesn't carry them so when you do get them you hang on to them for dear life. My first one was given to me by Al last year, I brought a couple with me from home this time. A close up of the ring, the big advantage of this is that you can easily see the slightest bite because you are using the full length of the rod. Sitting in the sun drinking sweet ice tea, and no, I don't miss the ice and cold up North LOL This is one of my fishing buddies Al, even though the days have been beautiful and warm, first thing in the morning out on the pier can be cool, the water temperature is only 54°F. Al was a NY State trouper until he retired, really nice guy and boy does he have some stories to tell. Not a lot of new fish pictures to add, we are catching a lot of whitings but one whiting looks the same as the next, I'll try to get a few pictures of some of the other fish we catch and add them. Fishing the pier is very different than anything else I've ever done, yesterday I did my usual 7:00 am at the pier, we caught some whitings and a few really nice ones but it was slow by normal standards. We usually fish for a few hours then come in and do our whatever things. Yesterday I had a bit of time to kill in the afternoon so about 2:00 I decided to take a walk out on the pier with my rods. Middle of the afternoon, sun high in the sky I cast my first line in and didn't get a chance to pick up my second rod, the biggest whiting I have ever caught and it was non stop. I had to come back in at 3:30 but I hated to leave, it was some of the best catching I've had since I've been here, oh well lots more days to go! We've got a bit of cold weather coming in for a few days, I'm not sure how that will affect the catching but fishing on the pier is always an adventure and I've hooked up with some really nice guys. I finally found someone that wants to go clam and oyster digging with me so we are going to give it a shot next week. I'm really looking forward to it, I love fresh shell fish and free is even better, a non resident license is only $35.00 for the year and you are allowed 1/2 a bushel of clams per day and about the same in oysters. I'll try to do a more detailed report on that when it happens. Tight lines and stay safe!

  6. Oh man, done that been there. The shower after 3 to 11 often took seconds depending how much crud we had on us. Back then the hotels, later called bars and now are clubs, had last call at 1AM. When they extended closing to 2 AM showers took a tad longer, 5 minutes! Often my wife was getting up and I hadn't been to bed yet and the kitchen was a disaster area.

  7. Wow, do you ever reread what you wrote, your posts are getting worse all the time with your hate filled ridiculous comments. Even your fellow leaf fans must be embarrassed with your lack of class in this thread and personal attacks. Now you're even resorting to slander and you don't even care if what you write is even true anymore. Lol like Chris and Pierre need a paycheck, like how lame is that if it's all you can come up with. I guess you don't watch TSN then right, Pierre is a well respected member there. But I guess you know more than anyone else about the Athletic because I've never heard that from anyone ever. Pretty sure I have it figured out though. Someone from the Athletic once said something negative about the leafs so in your hate filled fog you paint the company and all the respected reporters that the Athletic has hired with the same brush. How pathetic that you've sunk this low instead of actually talking hockey like most folks here.

  8. Started assembling the tracks, now that all the treads are cut, drilled and the wheel guides are welded up. The treads are 1”x1/2”x14” long channel. The guides are 1”x1/8” flat bar, bent to form a rounded triangle. All bolted together with 5/16” bolts, nuts and washers. Once everything is together and has proven to work the way I hope; I’ll cut the excess bolt length off and tack weld the nuts to cut the bolts. The rubber strips that the treads are bolted to, are from an industrial conveyor belt that use to haul rock out of a quarry. It’s about a 1/4” thick with multiple layers of canvas and rubber. All I can say is that I picked a good winter to build this contraption; because there’s no ice on Simcoe that I’m willing to get out on. Which gives me more time to finish up. LOL This rig may take its maiden voyage out on Nipissing? Dan.

  9. Just about all online businesses once they create a shipping label call it shipped. Even if the shipping company only picks up from them on Fridays. I have seen some places have them more then a week before the shipping company picks it up.

  10. Man you are an angry person Chris. So willing to get physical over a bunch of hockey banter. 😂 I'm guessing you don't consider the fact that assault is illegal. Or maybe you don't care, or can't think outside that Neanderthal mentality. Sheese…….go for a beer or something.....relax!

Meets all my needs I am sure. 160 bucks plus tax CDN. I will be submitting the bill to my insurance provider as well as OAS (Old Age Security). My Doc said he would write a scrip for them. I don't know if I will get reimbursed for anything but if you don't ask you will never get an answer. Thanks again guys. Johnny D

  12. Fact is if you are using crappie bait , light line and have some crappie in your live well. If people or a CO sees you catching bass and not moving to get away from out of season fish they can still charge you

  14. A slight NW wind today. Wind Turbines were not making and juice today. Small pleasure boats could have gone out today fishing. I have no idea where to even think about looking for them now that The Nanticoke electrical generators are gone. Fishermen would break through the ice built up on the ramp at Hoover Marina to launch. Bob Izumi taped an episode of his fishing show years ago doing the exact same thing. Mid 90's maybe. They caught a carp in the warm water discharge that had 2 tails.

  15. The warmers now, well most are air activated. No shaking required. Good thing. Nothing like shaking a pack or 2 in the truck and get the look, whats that guy doing in there ? LOL You want mitts JD. My right pinky gets cold real easy. I put a nail through it in the early 80,s. Ever since then, it gets cold and very painful.

  17. Took my neighbour to try and get him his first Lake Trout through the ice. He got A nice one, job done! We lost a few more fish and I got some whitefish. The pike were everywhere on my spot that day, got some nice ones in the mid 30”s. We have been planning to go fishing for 3 years, lol, finally made it. Jared had a nice trout supper with his family, and my crew got whitefish soup.

  18. Akrisoner, I don't often open ice fishing posts but came across this and read your OP. Man, glad to have you back, safe and sound. It read like a Tom Clancy novel. Complete with the Hero living to tell about it thank God. Close one eh kid? Just the other night I was watching one of those reality Cop shows and a dog went through the ice when on a walk with his buddy and was nearly dead from scratching on the ice around a 4' hole. You could see the blood from the Pups paws clawing on the edge of the ice., he had been in there for only about 10 minutes when the water rescue crew got to him. Only 5' of water yet both rescuers donned their dry dive suits before they went in. Anyone could have jumped in a pond only 5' deep. If someone did that within a minute someone else would need to now rescue both a Dog and a Man. Just the look on that pups face wanted me to well up, OK I did. A job without a plan is a plan for disaster. I hope all the folks here that venture out onto our ice in our beautiful lakes and rivers take something away from your experience. There is no such thing as too much preparation. If only one of the guys here do something better to help prepare themselves for a bad day because of your post and it saves someone else's or their own life you have done what you were put here on Earth for. Simple as that. I don't know if you do the social media thing out there but if you do or someone else here does please pass on this post, please. I have a saying. " Experience is a lifetime of mistakes. Wisdom is knowing how not to make them again." You now have some wisdom Akrisoner and now you can pass it on. Johnny D edit: The Golden Retriever was warmed up in the Cop car given 02 and spent the night in the vets, he was out walking with his buddy the next afternoon.
