Christopheraaron Posted April 9, 2015 Report Posted April 9, 2015 Last month I bought a set of knives off a board member and one of them (a folder) has some corrosion down the handle on the rivets, I would consider using something like CLR but it has a wooden handle and I obviously wouldn't want to damage it. Just curious to hear everybody's opinions on what the best way to go about this would be.
ecmilley Posted April 9, 2015 Report Posted April 9, 2015 i use CLR or a sos pad but honestly never gave much consideration to what it would do to wood
bare foot wader Posted April 9, 2015 Report Posted April 9, 2015 don't think they advise clr for contact with wood, but you could rinse it out thoroughly and dry it how bad is the rust? I would start with some oil and scrub it out
aplumma Posted April 9, 2015 Report Posted April 9, 2015 Chris post a picture of the knife I have a few things that work and if it is to bad you can ship it to me and I will restore it. Art
dave524 Posted April 9, 2015 Report Posted April 9, 2015 (edited) It's a mild abrasive but have cleaned similar things with a little automotive chrome polish or automotive rubbing compound. The mildest abrasive out there is toothpaste. Edited April 9, 2015 by dave524
Christopheraaron Posted April 9, 2015 Author Report Posted April 9, 2015 Managed to get it cleaned up with some linseed oil, thanks for the help guys (especially Art for your kind offer). I'll try to get some pictures up later.
Paudash Posted April 10, 2015 Report Posted April 10, 2015 put it a baking dish then cover it with a can of coke and let it sit over night. You would be amazed at what the acid in that stuff does to rusted metal
