I have had bugs plug up the very end before and went through what you did only to find this out after. :wallbash: A piece of mig welding wire works really good for this.
Dondorfish Posted April 24, 2012 Report Posted April 24, 2012 Check for a thermostat - read somewhere that some of the old Mercs had them in and won't spit water out till the motor reaches a set temperature. Tracker (Don)
NAW Posted April 24, 2012 Report Posted April 24, 2012 Did you put the impeller in your self. This may seem stupid, but are you sure all the tubes are connected properly? On my evenrude, you have to be very carefull to get the tubes to line up just right, or they will not connect properly, or kink a little.
grt1 Posted April 24, 2012 Report Posted April 24, 2012 i just came in from starting my 20 merc for the first time this year and i noticed that i didn't get any water out of the pee hole on top just a dribble, after the motor ran for a couple minutes the stream started. I agree with the previous poster, there must be a thermostat that has to heat up before the stream comes.

A piece of weed trimmer line works great as well.
richyb Posted April 24, 2012 Author Report Posted April 24, 2012 I can pull off the rubber output line on the top and blow into it and I can get bubbles in my barrel of water so I don't think its clogged up. The "fins" on the impeller come straight out and I had to bend them to put it in. When I move the prop back and forth the " fins" flop one way and the other so it cant be in backwards. With the engine running I can feel air blowing out of the rubber output hose.. Thanks guys
Sherriff Posted April 24, 2012 Report Posted April 24, 2012 Irishfield helped me when I asked the same. It was a thermostate issue for me. After it heated up, stream was fine. Sherriff
davey buoy Posted April 24, 2012 Report Posted April 24, 2012 Is the impeller on backwards? A buddy of mine Roy changed his impeller, still no water.Dropped the lower end and it was in backwards.Changed it and away she went.
NANUK Posted April 24, 2012 Report Posted April 24, 2012 Sounds like the impeller vanes backwards or the water tube not connected to water pump housing.
4x4bassin Posted April 24, 2012 Report Posted April 24, 2012 I have a 94 Merc. 8 hp and it will not spit water right away, it needs to heat up first . I was a bit concerned with this as well (no constant stream) but I have never had a problem with it !
Tybo Posted April 24, 2012 Report Posted April 24, 2012 Do you have the lower unit submerge deep enough in the barrel.Submerge the housing to the level of the impeller housing.
