Christopheraaron Posted March 12, 2012 Report Posted March 12, 2012 Hi, I'm new to this forum, I know that this fish is not the most popular but I have an itching to do some fly fishing now that the rivers are free of ice, does anyone have some suggestions for how to catch these (preferably in the gta), are they even running yet? Thanks.
Snidley Posted March 12, 2012 Report Posted March 12, 2012 If you turn up on any GTA tribs with a flyrod at this time of year (with the exception of part of the open water on the Credit) then most people that see you will assume you are fishing out of season rainbows using the excuse that you are targeting suckers (which usually show up later in the spring). Be ready for some abuse.
Christopheraaron Posted March 12, 2012 Author Report Posted March 12, 2012 Thanks, I didn't think of that, well i'll be ready for it other than that got any advice for the run?

Be ready for some abuse. Rainbows are in season, so long as you're on a stretch of river that's in season... Check the regs and see what stretches of your local tributaries are open. Use steelhead flies...if you're targetting steelhead, you're targetting suckers...
mikeseb Posted March 12, 2012 Report Posted March 12, 2012 Wont see the suckers for atleast another month. All you need for bait is worms or even bread! I have caught quite a few 5-6 pounders on leftover pizza crust! Just use an egg sinker and leave your bait right on the bottom they will come for it

Suckers will take pretty much any dark coloured fly from stones to nymphs to small beadhead buggers. :good: Rainbows will too. You will find them showing up in the next few weeks as the water warms. Christopheraaron Posted March 12, 2012 Author Report Posted March 12, 2012 Great thanks for the help, I think that I'll check out the open section of bronte this week for some steelies!
Sharkbait22 Posted March 12, 2012 Report Posted March 12, 2012 Single eggs are good for suckers. Water temp for spawning is > 10oC. The way the weather is going that could be in a couple weeks! Many steelhead will be stuffed with sucker eggs.
Photoz Posted March 13, 2012 Report Posted March 13, 2012 (edited) If you are from Richmond Hill, go up to Beaverton, right down by the Lake where the river flows in, not crowded & H-U-G-E Lake Simcoe suckers . . . . my best one so far was 5.6 pounds . . . . 'Beans' got one 5.9 pounds once when I was there. A light 6' to 7' rod & 4 pound line will make a real contest outta this typa fishin.' With the warm weather upon us, my bet would be they'll be in there VERY shortly. The rainbows are almost finished their run in some of the eastern tribs! I've never seen anyone fly-fishin' 'em, but they hit ANYTHING . . . why not flies? Once they're in, (by the end of the month) I'll let you know. P. S. The day that Beansie nailed his 5.9 pounder, Big Cliff & Crappieperchhunter were there too. I'm just assuming these are whit suckers in Lake Simcoe? Edited March 13, 2012 by Photoz
Christopheraaron Posted March 13, 2012 Author Report Posted March 13, 2012 I checked out beaverton on goog. maps looks good, and a lot closer than some of the lake ontario tribs. I'll look forward to that message.
Garfisher Posted March 13, 2012 Report Posted March 13, 2012 (edited) Record white sucker is between 5.3 and 5.4lbs. Nice record suckers photoz Edited March 13, 2012 by Garfisher
Christopheraaron Posted March 13, 2012 Author Report Posted March 13, 2012 (edited) I checked up on the species present and there are suckers in there, the crappie and them are the only ones who migrate and it would be pretty hard to mix up a sucker and a crappie. Photoz Posted March 18, 2012 Report Posted March 18, 2012 I hit Beaverton this morning . . . . taught several worms how to swim . . . after a couple hours running my float up & down the river nary a nibble. But . . . . there is only a little shore ice in the lake, I'd say there will be some of those B I I I G suckers will be in there by next weekend. I also washed about a dozen good pike lures down at Bluffers Park . . . . had a real nice one follow my red & white 3/5 ounce Daredevyl right in to shore, where he just sat and gave me the ol' evil eye, before slowly swimming off.
Christopheraaron Posted March 19, 2012 Author Report Posted March 19, 2012 Thanks for the update photoz I decided to try the holland and got a few nice perch and one small crappie, but they're in there (good luck finding a spot though lots of guys).
Christopheraaron Posted March 20, 2012 Author Report Posted March 20, 2012 I never asked, at what temperature of water do they usually some in at?
Garfisher Posted March 21, 2012 Report Posted March 21, 2012 10*C is when they supposedly start running according to the Freshwater Fishes of Ontario
Christopheraaron Posted March 21, 2012 Author Report Posted March 21, 2012 Nice! were about there almost!
Live2fish85 Posted March 21, 2012 Report Posted March 21, 2012 (edited) The suckers are in full where I was the yesterday. Edited March 21, 2012 by Live2fish85
The Urban Fisherman Posted March 21, 2012 Report Posted March 21, 2012 I checked out the big creek dam in Delhi, ON - a little farther south but the suckers are in full force! I used to bottom bounce a worm, or fish them with my steelhead set-up, under a float with a chunk of shrimp... Good luck!
Christopheraaron Posted March 21, 2012 Author Report Posted March 21, 2012 Since the crappie haven't been biting maybe I'll check it out tonight!
davey buoy Posted March 21, 2012 Report Posted March 21, 2012 Since the crappie haven't been biting maybe I'll check it out tonight! Ice out is really early this year,do you think there biological clock is off? maybe.
mikeseb Posted March 22, 2012 Report Posted March 22, 2012 Caught a few suckers today and saw TONS. I had noticed a few fish had a dark stripe going horizontal down the body from the head to the anal fin, any idea what these were? Sorry i wasnt able to catch one of the different looking suckers or id throw up a pic
Garfisher Posted March 22, 2012 Report Posted March 22, 2012 Probably a Longnose Sucker, although apparently male White Suckers can get the stripe too when in spawn mode.
Dabluz Posted March 22, 2012 Report Posted March 22, 2012 Probably a Longnose Sucker, although apparently male White Suckers can get the stripe too when in spawn mode. Yes....suckers do change colours during spawning. Dark stripe and often lots of red on each side of the dark stripe. They also do a lot of jumping during the spawning run. I guess it's to loosen the eggs inside their bodies.
Christopheraaron Posted March 22, 2012 Author Report Posted March 22, 2012 Just got back from beaverton! lots of bass jumping around me a couple of panfish nibbles but no sucker in sight maybe they're further upstream?
