Yep, i think weve all looked to the sky asking for those at one point or another. Its easy to suck the ice off an ice rod......not such an easy task at the end of a 14 footer LOL.

I think we could probably find the technology as close to our noses as the battery operated socks :)

Shouldn't be very hard, especially for ice rods... I'd love it on my pin! I wouldn't know where to begin however.

I would say just use some of the paint used to fix the rear window defroster in a car. The just hook some leads to it down in the butt with a 9 volt and your off to the races for an ice rod. but it might melt your non bradied lines

I was thinking some wire around each guide, held in place with some nail polish then run back down to the handle.. A low voltage watch battery or something. You don't want it hot, just warm to keep the ice from forming...

I would say that the amperage would be so low not to do any damage. That it wont be feasible with the eyelets being open to all elements.

Heres one i did a few years back "1993" , turned a dump truck into a full size pickup

DID YA EVER WATCH TIM THE TOOL MANwhistling.gifrofl2.gif I LIKE THE IDEA THOUGH..I WOULDN'T HAVE TO USE THE HORN

Before I resorted to a heated rod guide, I'd look strongly for a compound you could apply that would cause a sort of reaction to keep ice from the guides.

and remember ceramic resist heat

You don't need much heat at all to turn ice into water.... A few degrees above zero is all that's needed.

Yep, but that's why something like capsicum in a carrier like PEG might just do the trick easily?

I just don't think physically heating the guides would be of any convenience, but that's just me.

Either way, either approach would have advantages and drawbacks

has anyone ever cut out sodium acetate from those heating pads?

I think it would be in a gel, that could possibly be spread on the rod guides? Not sure how it would react though?

just a thought

OK fine I'll make one tonight with heated rod guides.Run a thin insulated wire up the back of the rod and use some of the defroster paint around the rod guides, hooke up to a little battery with a momentary switch.

Jedi, how about a small light mounted on the rod aimed at the guides?

Like Bill said, it wouldn't take much to keep it from freezing. Even dunking the rod in the lake works well for about two minutes, lol

A light to cast heat it would have to be incadencent and they take up some serious bettery life. how long would a flash light last with a single battery in -20... even if it worked the batterry wouldn't last long enough to be very useful.

Oh man, I just figured it out for the ice fishing rod...think it would be worth a patent? Of course now I can't say what the idea is.

Probably, if it works. There is obviously a hyyyyuge market for it

Nah, well...maybe to have bragging rights to having invented it lol, but the amount of the population that fishes is pretty slim........or at least the amount of lunatics, i mean people, that fish in the middle of winter is slim. Dont think theres much money there
