Take the live sucker, cut head off. Throw into the river in the area you are fishing for chum. then behind where you cut the head off, cut a single steak off. don't cut more than you use at once, as it will start to dry out. I have a couple large Tupperware tubs in my garage with pumps that I use to keep the suckers alive. Usually three or four 20" to 24" suckers will do ya a good day on the grand.... We have also used cut bait rainbow trout from Lake Ontario...but the suckers work better.

From my experience, even the new HDS models still only gets two to three years on them before the sensitivity starts decreasing. The biggest cause is the towing/trailering....If you don't cover up the bottom of the transducer (ie, with a sock, or similar) the gravel and dirt/dust will start to scratch the base.

TOO MANY cheap boat trailers out there.... If you want a good trailer, one that will last, can be used in the cold (ie, no plastic fenders), good strong box tubing, you will likely need to go custom. I have a 17' boat that I too am looking to replace the trailer.... I can pay as little as $1,400 for the trailer...but as soon as I start talking to the salesman/manufacturer, I'm quickly into a $3K trailer.

Lowrance transducers lose strength faster than Hbirds.

nothing beats a fresh cut sucker for the lower Grand River. Have them swimming in your livewell prior to use. don't freeze your sucker bait....breaks the flesh down and makes the blood go funny.

Suggestions for a 2 bank charger (will not be on-board)
Steve replied to Raycaster's topic in General Discussion
you can't just leave them in the boat, attach two chargers, one on each, and just leave the chargers connected? then just run an extension cord (or two or three) from your power source to the boat? That's what we do on my boat....chargers just stay attached to the batteries....I have 3 extension cords that I can connect from the cottage/house/whatever. Saves ya from lugging the batteries to and from the power source. -
yes. it is.

Suggestions for a 2 bank charger (will not be on-board)
Steve replied to Raycaster's topic in General Discussion
you know, I just leave the batteries connected in series. I posted the question three or four years ago, when I bought my first 24v trolling motor. I had been disconnecting the batteries then charging. I cannot recall who exactly, but a couple folks on here posted that it wouldn't matter if I disconnected them, and I could just charge normally. So that's what I've been doing for almost four years without issue. I keep telling myself I'm going to install an onboard charger, but using this method has worked for so long I keep finding other things to spend my money on -
well go and voice your opinion then..... the mnr needs to hear it.

I don't have an onboard charger, but have 24v trolling motors (both tiller and bow mount). I just use 2 simple 12v chargers from Crappy Tire. Been work for 7 years now. -
Or you just fish the hell out of your boat My last boat carpet lasted from 1998 to 2009. Rebuilt the boat in 2009 with new carpet...should be good at least for another four more years or so. (i hope) You should get 10 years out of quality carpet....any longer than that, the wood underneath will be rotten. Some of the most active anglers I know just fish the hell out of their boats....after all, that is why we bought them. (and yes, don't buy used stuff off me )
-
cleaning carpet? you're supposed to do that?

with the amount of folks who "angle" for zombies, I'd say Kings are for a heckuva lot more than lake trollers.
-
or maybe just ban the use of roe.... errrr.....nevermind.

wow. not sure what to say about that video. would like to hear a biologists opinion on that one....seems too crazy to believe.

Love it. Make a speaker box out of a mug!!

Lowe is a good brand. That boat is very similar to the Legend you were looking at.

Marley is a staple on my boat.... So far the fish just seem to bite more when Ja Rasta is blasting...maybe they get the munchies? :)

music does not effect fishing. well, maybe mentally it does...but not physically. I run the SUPER shallows for trout and while I cut my outboard and troll on my electric, I always play music.....it doesn't matter. When I rebuilt my tiller lund I had a custom mount built for my marine stereo and speakers....

looking forward to the game this Thursday against the Wild. I bet the ACC will be rockin' with Nylander and Kapanen both called up!!!

In order for a company to remain profitable, it seems short cuts are taken. These short cuts have resulted in lips breaking off, baits cracking, and lesser quality hardware...starting back when the original tail dancers came out and the paint flaked off..... Too bad....good Finnish company.....

sounds like an older starcraft would fit your needs nicely.

If you were looking for a new tiller boat
Steve replied to bigcreekdad's topic in General Discussion
I would agree with you. If money wasn't an object, I would also choose the Pro Guide 1775 with the 90hp Yammy. It isn't much different than my Pro Guide 1700 (17'4"), but it is much wider! -
it all works... your fishing a ditch that literally is coated with zombie fish on the bottom.... if I fish the lake and can't catch a fish, I'll simply troll my way up dalhousie from the lake to the ramp. I've NEVER not caught a fish doing that....a simple little crank and away I go.... your fishing a man made trough that is literally full of fish year around..... 3 way, spoons, cranks, floating, etc, etc, etc....it all works. dalhousie is not hard fishing....

Fishing for Tyler auction - guided catfish and muskie trips
Steve replied to Fisherpete's topic in General Discussion
I would just like to point out the catfish trip garnered more coin than the muskie trip..... AWESOME!!!! Big cats on the Grand in March/April/May cannot be beat!!!! Good on you Sir for offering your boat up for both trips. May the force be with you on both those days.
