  1. time to play devils advocate... salmon dying and nutrients going back into the circle is 100% natural. but, there is nothing natural about salmon carcasses being stripped and dumped anywhere from a couple to hundreds of feet from the riverbanks and salmon carcasses tossed into garbage cans serve no purpose other than stinking up the area. i think educating people about the benefits of leaving the carcass near or in the water would help solve the issue of residents complaining about the smell. the carcasses belong in or near the water. take the roe and leave them there if you're not going to eat it. a ban on roe would definitely help with the carcasses being littered everywhere and would definitely lower the number of fish that are taken. it seems like the majority of people i speak with who are fishing for salmon on the rivers are steelheaders looking for free roe and could care less about salmon as they're only interested in killing one species to catch another. if there were a ban on roe many people would have no reason to target salmon as it seems like most are after roe, not meat. a ban would likely stop greedy people from killing multiple fish to load up on roe and would also curb most poaching as nobody would have a use for the roe the poachers take every year. that said, does anyone have a good reason why we're allowed to target these easily caught and snagged spawning fish, yet most other species are off limits when they're spawning in wide open lakes?
  2. legal or not, it's not right to allow any pet to wander the neighborhood causing problems for others, especially when it comes to cats who get into garbage, crap in gardens, kill small animals for fun, and cause problems for other people. i'll never understand how anyone can let their cat roam free knowing full well that it's likely causing problems for something or someone else. luckily, it's 100% legal to live trap cats and hand them over to the SPCA where the owner has the pleasure of paying $50+ to get their animal back
  3. predator management through hunting and trapping are some of the most effective methods of controlling populations. you can thank those hunters and trappers who "shoot stuff for fun" for keeping coyote (and many other animals) populations in check which in turn helps the local deer, turkey, waterfowl, and small game. that said, why bother opening a thread titled "coyote gun restoration" if you're against the shooting of yotes? NAW, it must have been very satisfying using that firearm to take this coyote. Very nicely done!
  4. jones soda. coincidentally, they're the same size as beer bottles.
  5. IMO more hunters would be consistently successful if they knew how to stalk properly. it seems like too many people rush into the bush and are more concerned about camo, calls, scents, and equipment performance rather than their surroundings and the impact their presence has on wildlife. seeing as you've already went over where to find the deer, maybe your next video will cover how to get close to them? i know a lot of hunters would benefit from it...
  6. that same idea works very well for carrying bottles of pop on the ATV
  7. sloooooow down. patience and practice are key! you have to go into the bush knowing that you can spend hours stalking a deer just to be busted by one mistake. it's often frustrating, but once you get the hang of it you'll be hooked for life and will wonder why you ever bothered hunting or taking pictures from a stand. stalking is not only far more exciting than stand hunting, you'll see far more deer and learn more about them in the process deer are far easier to get close to if they're near populated area's with little to no hunting pressure and this would be the best place to start practicing your stalking skills. try the same thing on pressured deer in public hunting area's and you'll quickly learn how aware they are of their surroundings. the last few seasons i've stalked and tagged deer at 10, 11, and 12 yards with the crossbow. planning for 9 yards or less next season
  8. ...and better MPG than the same truck in regular cab, 2 wd, 4.3l gets. meh, we're all fishermen here. exaggeration is to be expected :D on that note, what V8 currently has the best real world MPG?
  9. x2 last season out of burwell i was using dipseys with mono (i know better now and use braid) off my homemade boards and hooked a big walleye, but the dipsy didn't release. it was my first trip out experimenting with clothes pin and rubber band releases. that didn't release either as it was clearly too tight so i was dragging a dipsey with that big fish and the board wasn't back far enough for me to even notice something was up. i landed a couple measured 28" fish that day and actually managed to get this big one close enough to the boat for a peak before it got off. build your own if you have to. when looking for ideas for mine i saw a bunch of salt water guys building planer boards that had 3-4 boards joined together for the heavy stuff. just make sure your mast and anchor point is heavy duty with some cable reinforcements....
  10. a couple of my best perching sessions (one after another constant action) have been on lake simcoe shortly after the sun dips down and everyone else is off the ice. but, the bite doesn't last long and i'm thinking it's more of a "right place at the right time" kinda thing. my buddy has a perch in his aquarium and the only time it eats is at night when there is minimal light in the basement. the tank always has minnows in it so the fish definitely has the option of eating any time it wants.
  11. This "license" is nothing more than a waste of time and is a huge money grab. IMO, the only ones who think its a good idea likely wear wool and make the odd "baaah" sound
  12. liquid smoke and a dehydrator may be easier, but nothing beats the flavor of real smoke. we've taken meat from the same batches and finished some in the smoker, some in the dehydrator, and the rest in the oven. All 3 had a different flavor in the end each time (did this 3-4 different times), so it really comes down to personal preference. some foil lined 1" insulation solves the issue of using the smoker in the winter. small hot plates can be picked up pretty cheap to add some extra heat too. anyone have a line on a free old metal interior fridge? i'll give you a well seasoned true north smoker (smaller with 3 racks) and/or some smoked meat for hookin it up
  13. x2 i'll never forget when i was in my teens and dropped one in a bag then tossed it outside the hut. a few minutes later i heard dad walk over to the hut from his and all i heard was "oh god, what the hell !!!". apparently he thought it was the grocery bag with our snacks and he opened it near his face to look in it to see what was left :D:D:D
  14. very attractive pricing and good layout. congrats and good luck, i think you'll do great!
  15. No, its because reputable roofers would rather do the job properly the first time so they will have piece of mind knowing they won't have to come back to repair the expensive roof they just installed. Some contractors do care about their reputation and not everything is about $$$. Out of curiosity, how might one guarantee a metal shingle roof if they're not exactly sure what's under the shingles and a waterproof membrane can't be installed? The membrane isn't highly recommended and even a requirement for some contractors "just because". A couple home inspectors I know have seen their fair share of $15k+ metal roofs that had to be ripped off because they were nothing more than bandaids...
  16. Awesome, thanks! I guess it was the "charlie" that rang a bell. I used to love that show...
  17. I haven't a clue why this reminded me, but what's the name of that old show where they'd always have the underwater camera while trolling. Now THAT was a cool show about trolling.
  18. Oddly enough, nearly every professional roofer around here removes shingles before installing the metal shingles. Have you much experience with installing metal roofs? Considering the costs involved, maybe it would be beneficial to seek advice from a reputable metal roof installer?
  19. seeing as i had to hit youtube to learn about this, could you help me out a bit? what's the difference between spey and traditional fly fishing? it appears that it's much less work than traditional fly casting as one fluid movement sends the fly out a good distance. why choose one over the other?
  20. lol! you could actually be onto something though. i'm thinking some sort of device that could be attached to your ATV or snowmobile to prevent it from sinking would be an excellent idea. move up to the truck size when you have the bugs worked out of the smaller one. inflatable PFD's easily float 250 lbs so it shouldn't be too difficult developing one to float an ATV or sled. i'd gladly spend a couple hundred $$$ to make sure i don't lose my machine to a watery grave...
  21. fair enough. i just like to learn and understand the different views other firearms owners have, as well as those who are against firearms all together. and yes, i did ask "why" a lot when i was a kid and still do... PS...there are many rifles and shotguns classified as restricted. there's a big misconception out there that restricted = only handguns.
  22. good thing too, i'd hate to be sharing the bush with someone like that! some people just don't understand how easily accidents can happen and you need to be on your "A game" when handling firearms.
  23. lol...kinda like you were doing to me last year for a short time? besides, that was supposed to say "why?" rather than "and?". you can thank the new phone and T9 for that one. just an FYI...a restricted license is not only for handguns, but other restricted long guns as well. i agree that you can never be too safe with firearms. PM me if you'd like to go hunting or shooting sometime. i'm taking another newly licensed guy next week (IF we have snow) to show him the ropes if you'd like to tag along for some rabbits and some skeet shooting
  24. how about we compare apples to apples? safety warnings and regulations are usually put in place after people have learnt the hard way. the canadian coast guard wants us to wear a PFD whenever we're around water, yet they say not to if you're in an enclosed vehicle. you're suggesting the canadian and US coast guards don't have any field experience (ie. training and recovering bodies)? sorry, but i'd prefer to side with them rather than what some guy on the internet says. it's common sense really...
