  2. thats how I tried to hold my first one for a picture. I think i bled for about 10 mins :S
  3. Me and Chris (ChristopherK) went ice fishing to a few smaller local lakes on Sunday. To start off, we went to a lake that Chris had fished in last summer for carp and sunfish but didn't end up catching anything there. We went to another lake that we thought might be good and ended up catching a few perch while setting up, but they were mostly small. After me and Chris had everything set up, I put down my heavier ice rod with 6 pound line, a metal leader, and a big dead minnow for pike, and chris did the same thing with a tip-up that he brought. About 5 minutes later I looked out the window of the ice hut and saw my rod pulled out of the snow and being dragged towards the hole. I set the hook and the pike started fighting back. I think I must have had it on for about 5 seconds, then the line went slack and I could feel nothing. Lost it. For the next hour or so, the action was pretty slow. I think Chris and I probably caught around 5 perch, and I caught a fairly decent one that we took a picture of. After that, I went back into the ice hut and Chris jigging a teardrop jig and a small minnow (I think). He suddenly got a bite, his rod got pulled down, and the drag went off. He fought his fish for about a minute, thinking it was a bass or a really big perch. He got it landed okay, and it was a pike that was probably around 14 inches or so. We took a few quick pictures than put it back too. The total for the day was 1 pike and about 10 perch landed, and then the one bigger pike that I lost. It was a good day for us. The pike through the ice was a first for me (and Chris I think), and the fish had really nice colors on them too. Hope you enjoyed, Matt.
  4. good review. I bought the same one from the link that was posted here, and I think a bunch of other people did as well. I've only got to try mine out once so far, now I need to made the makeshift ice ducer like you did. Really, I'm just planning on using mine to know the temprature, depth, and bottom structure and it looks like it delivers that all for just over $100.
  5. A friend and I want to try fishing for brown trout and pike tomorrow afternoon at a spot where i confirmed theres open water as of today. Yes it is in lake ontario w/ all year open season. Has anybody had any luck with anything particular for both those species in open water during winter? I was thinking something like hj14 husky jerks for pike and then smaller rapalas or worms under a float for brown trout. Do these work good ? Any other suggestions on presentation, lure choice, etc? Thanks.
  6. I got a bunch of money and stuff for christmas so I decided I'm going to spend a bit on a baitcasting setup for pike and bass next year. The rod I want to get will be a st croix mojo bass 7' MH 1pc. I want a shimano curado for the setup but that doesnt matter. My parents two cars that I will be driving are an 08 bmw 335i and a 2011 mazda 3. the mazdas rear seats fold down but I don't think the bmws do. Will I be able to fit my proposed rod into my cars safely and comforably (for me and the rod), and if I can fit the rod in, will I still have enough room to take friends along too? I don't want to do it if I will be running the risk of losing an eyeball or something if I ever get in a crash. Both cars are pretty small, so can anybody who also tries to put 1 pc rods in smaller cars tell me how they do it? and should I get a rod sock to protect my investment? Thanks, Matt PS, if a 1 piece rod can't fit or wouldnt be a good choice, any other reccomendations of good 2 pc rods?
  7. Best intro ever, lol. Welcome!
  8. Generally, the grand isnt that great for pike fishing, more well known for smb (which im sure you know are closed right now). If i had my heart set on catching a pike in the grand, i would most likely be at one of the reservoirs right now (shades mills, guelph, belwood, etc.) theres healthy populations of generally smallish pike in each one.
  9. Well at least you caught one! I haven't been fishing in a few weeks
  10. a. mountsberg has been closed since the 30th of November. b. bass season has also been closed since the 30th of November. These regs are in place for a reason, especially for smaller waterbodies like that. Please respect them, so we will have something in the future..
  11. Don't want to stir anything up on here.... but I've been told to watch it by a few friends from school, cause I find the types of people on that show quite 'entertaining'. While I may laugh at some stereotypes while watching some youtube clips I've seen, I could certainly never live anywhere down there. just my $0.02.
  12. I bought one from that site as well now. thanks for posting it.

  15. So... I went to SAIL today for the black friday sale, and bought a 10'6 medium power, moderate action, fenwick HMX. Thoughts on this rod? Good choice for drifting roe and casting lighter hardware? I think I'll buy a MH fast action rod this spring for casting heavier spoons for brown trout, such as a fenwick eagle or something, unless this rod I got already has the capabilities for casting heavier spoons for chinooks?
  16. why would anyone be going that fast over waves anyways? It would seem that something is bound to go wrong, sooner or later. Matt.
