  1. not homemade rink related but still head scratcher. well not really a head scratcher tbh. but there's hope for locals http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/toronto/a-national-pastime-toogood-to-give-up/article22726104/
  2. This is my pet peeve and why there are long waits. If people would go to a walk in or their GP (if they have one) when they get the sniffles or cough, things would run better. Also why they triage people in ER, worse case scenario, you keep getting bumped as the more serious start rolling in. And don't feel guilty about your ER visit Cliff as concussion/head trauma is something you don't want to dismiss. You got cleared and that peace of mind is worth a tonne of gold.
  3. Last word on this (maybe). I get the sense that some people think if there were no front yard rinks, kids would become lazy slobs sitting in front of computers or tvs all day. If a rink is that make or break for their health, then kids are doomed. It takes more than a small rink to get kids healthy and fit. Skating helps (ANY physical activity helps) but I'll bet nine times out of ten the kids chow down on chips and candy or guzzle litres of soft drinks when they come inside. This is a one step forward two steps back approach to fitness and health. If the woman really checked the bylaws, she would have noticed the boards would be a problem but imo she rolled the dice and lost. Get all soft drinks (and sugars) out of kid's diets and we'll talk.
  4. thanks. story was tl;dr. If she's an engineer, she could frame some 2x10's over the pool and built a rink there maybe have a fire pit going as well for warming up. and I know this is heresy around here but if she really wanted her kids to have exercise as a lifelong component to well being, then I'd suggest she put her kids on skinny skis and get them into classic or skate. upside is you're outside in the trees vs front yard. ymmv but yeah, her mistake was the boards. next year she'll know better and let the neighbour stew in misery while her kids enjoy the rink lol
  5. and not everyone has problems with rinks. a photo gallery of home made rinks in the Globe and Mail http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/your-wonderful-images-of-backyard-ice-rinks/article22550422/
  6. this is funny. I grew up in downtown Toronto (not big lots) and flooded by own rink as a kid. never a problem with neighbours. A neighbour a few doors is building a rink in his backyard and no one has problems. What I get from these rink stories is that if they built the rinks in the backyards, it probably wouldn't be a problem. I have no idea why they put them in front yards other than to say 'hey look at how cool I am, building a rink for my kids'
  7. please go to the hospital ASAP and get checked out. You had a concussion and NEED to have it looked at. Problems can develop later. Please. and while it may not be necessary, ask about getting a baseline reading. Might have to go to a specialist but this could be very important down the road.
  8. If you already have cracks and it's causing pain, aside from Okeefe's, use New Skin to seal it up a bit so it does open up any further. While it doesn't heal splits/cracks per se, it does keep it from getting worse. Or you could try crazy glue... Bag Balm is not bad but super greasy and didn't make that much diff for finger tip cracks.
  9. I like my fingers and other body parts so prefer to use 5 or 10 lb tanks. A propane fitter I know had some scary stories of people who tried to refill their 1 lbers but things went wrong.
  10. Saw one over Wolseley Bay a few years back. Cost was a mangled prop but worth it
  11. hmmm, priorities. blonde or boat ?
  12. groan lolol
  13. yup. classic Leaf tactic...build solid lead then thru sheer willpower, let the other guys get back in the game
  14. Depending on which knife it is (chef, carving, utility etc.) the balance will be off if you've lost a bit off the end. I would buy her another knife to replace this one. Probably not worth investing in a Japanese blade Take her to Nikolauo or Tap Phong and let her go crazy
  15. I'm looking forward d to roast leg of lamb tonight but DAMN this is making me hungry already lol. pics or it didn't happen and Happy New Year to everyone. and stay inside today, the wind is absolutely brutal this morning !
  16. and Merry Christmas to you and your family Lew ! I have no tree this year so no pics but am trying hard not to tap my feet to Christmas music on the radio Merry Christmas to all on OFC !
  17. lack of yard (or outdoor) rinks won't be why our hockey would suck (it won't imo) but it'll be the cost of league play that will kill it. that and the way organized hockey emphasizes results vs fun. not to mention the politics of minor hockey. look at a guy like Crosby, he keeps a stick in his car in case he comes across a pick up game, that's LOVE of hockey.
  18. Niice ! smile says it all. Don't see much sign of grouse on my property but rabbits are ok and plenty of deer. and bear
  19. Growing up in the city with a small backyard rink and as someone who broke enough windows of the home beside a park rink, this is a minor problem really. Make the rink smaller and problem solved, don't encroach on city property. I don't see this as a big bad city hall bureaucracy vs kid rink. My guess is, the puck on boards noise is a big issue that wasn't mentioned. Solve that with foam padding or insulation between the board and poly. They know what the problem was and next year there won't be a problem with the rink. and make sure the neighbours are on board
  20. The video doesn't seem to be on youtube but I have video of Nolan Whitesell descending the same water in an open canoe. If you think kayaking is gnar, an open boat takes it up a notch or two. If I ever figure out how to digitize video tape, will post a clip of it. Fortunately, the Gorge doesn't appear to have any death holes or keepers but whirlpools would be a problem as would flush drowning.
  21. Have a video of Nolan Whitesell running the Gorge in an open canoe. THAT makes your jaw drop when you understand the power of whirlpools and death eddies with massive fences (differential between moving water and an eddy and can often be measured in feet). Would like to have seen a higher angle to see what their lines were as most of the video looked like they were not in the meat in the middle.
  22. Caplans on Weston Rd. near Eglinton is where I go to drool over stoves and washers. the back room full of previous display models is a wallet vacuum. be forewarned
  23. I believe there was a thread here about solar systems and the companies that rent roof tops. for some reason, I think I recall some caution mentioned re: rental/lease agreements. will dig it up if I have time here the thread...http://ontariofishingcommunity.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=72942&hl=%2Bsolar+%2Bsystems
  24. Some items can't be shipped. For instance, was looking at the Base Camp Aqua Cube which was on sale (I think) and had free shipping but ONLY in the states. It wasn't a stocked item in Canada but they still wouldn't ship which is why I shop less and less at BPS and more at Cabelas and Sail. Sail's floor display of tents and bug shelters blows away all other stores imo. other stuff, not so much
  25. Their Canadian online presence needs a lot of work. Maybe start with Cdn pricing on items otherwise Cabelas wins this showdown.
