Good info Art. If Dan got any significant hardening results from what he did, it was not mild steel...eg 1018. Mild steel in it's native state is about 70 on the Rockwell B scale...not the C scale. 70 HRB is below 0 on the HRC scale as above mentioned (58-60), Any hardening you get is really only case hardening which would not be of significant help to a heavy spud as the material below will quickly give way. Also, a salt brine is a better choice than oil for that application(there's many old quench recipes including dish soap!). O-1 is an example oil quenched steel. Regardless, it appears that Dan is not using mild steel.

That's a great looking spud Dan. Just an FYI: Mild steel only has about .5% Carbon and for that reason, cannot be hardened. Tempering is actually the second step in treating carbon steel whereas you reheat the steel to a much lower temp in order to soften the steel slightly which will make it less brittle. There was a time ( a bloody long time) I would criticize the player decisions on this team. But not with this exec team...they've made great decisions and I have complete faith in the direction they're going. Gardiner is NOT my favorite, but if Babcock is ok with him, I'm ok with him. LOL And again, I love the fact this team is in every game and losing. I'm not in a hurry to see these guys place 8th and bugger up a draft pick. Beating the Pens was very impressive and showed what's ahead for this team. But until we can beat them 4 out of 7 games it doesn't matter. Go Leafs Go!!

I've been looking for the "theme" icon at the bottom left every time I've been on since it was posted...no luck! Thought I was either blind or had a wacky computer glitch going on. Well, I found it...accidentally. On my computer, the words "change theme" and the background are the same colour! I scrolled over it with the mouse and it changed to white. Sneaky!! LOL

I agree...hot goalies for sure. I watched the Matthews replay on slomo...it looked like the puck was bouncing and he didn't get all of it. I think a clean snap would have seen the back of the net. Amazing hand eye talent on this guy regardless of the outcome. The 3 on 3 is great fun to watch. Not so sure it would be as goon in the all star game though. Remember in these OT's the guys are playing for and extra point in the standings...that's a big deal. The all star game is beer league with a ton of talent. LOL I'd like to see a couple periods of 4 on 4.

I love these games when the Leafs out shoot the opponent, make some highlight reel plays and come out with a loss or a single point. That's the best of both worlds! We didn't get Matthews by just about making the playoffs. Babcock is a smarter hockey guy than me but yeah, Gardiner drives me nuts too. How about the OT a couple days ago? Leafs win the opening drop and Gardiner tries a 150 pass to...nobody. Three on three, gobs of open ice and he gets picked off. That stuff makes me wonder. LOL Anyway, great game last night. I'm not sure the location would be the limiting factor. 25 years ago I had a "wolf" tracing my steps along a path towards me in an area not all that far from Barrie. Not a agricultural area. I owned a purebred male male sheppard at the time and this thing dwafted it. Frankly, it froze me in my tracks. I was 5 miles from the nearest road in the middle of a wetland and carrying a recurve. When it walked, it's head hung low and swung back and forth. At about 12 yards I came up with the bow and it saw the movement...it made two leaps and was GONE! Two things I still remember... how massive the head looked as it approached and it's length as it leap to my right. Who knows but I still remember every detail of that animal.

Glad you mentioned that Rick...I agree. The Leafs are playing some great hockey at times which we never saw before...ever. When they go out and swamp a team and lose to a good goalie, I love it! No points and some great play!
