My understanding is that the towing capacity is for combined weight towed and in the vehicle, which included passengers. Thus, if you have 700 pounds of people and 300 pounds of gear then your 3,500 capacity is down to 2,500 pounds. I am not sure where curb wheight comes into play. My wife owns a Rav4 and it has been a great vehicle. However, I wouldn't consider towing 1,300kg with it. I consider it to be pretty good on gas but my other vehicle is a GMC Jimmy so that is relative.

I met him the same year as you did. I spent a couple of weeks at the Scarborough outdoor education camp in Kearny. He cam out to speak to us a couple of times. I didn't appreciate the experience as much as I should have. I also canoed Butt Lake in Algonquin Park that year... I believe the lake has since been renamed to Ralph Bice Lake.

My turn to rant, taxable benefit issue
John Bacon replied to lookinforwalleye's topic in General Discussion
Yes, I would expect them to be okay with that as long as the reimbursement has been included in your income. Think of it as a supplement to your allowance. In all honesty I didn't research the law; but that is what makes sense to me. If I was in your situation I would deduct the gas as part of the auto expenses. -
I am not sure what the current is but I would suggest that you head upstream from your access point. That way you know you can get back.

My turn to rant, taxable benefit issue
John Bacon replied to lookinforwalleye's topic in General Discussion
Yes but lets be reasonable. The gas is all going into one tank whether it is you or the company that pays for it. You are using the gas from that one tank regardless of whether it is personal or business mileage. There is no way to make sure that the gas that the company buys is used for business mileage and that only the gas that you pay for is used for personal mileage. But you are not paying tax on the entire amount. The re-imbursement is added to your income but the expense is deductable (I would include the gas that the company pay for in your auto expenses) for tax purposes. If 85-90% of your driving is for business that you can deduct 85-90% of you fuel cost for business. So would effectively be taxed on the 10-15% of the gas that is used for personal use. I think that is pretty reasonable. -

If I understand you correctly this is a personal car that you use for a mix of personal and company driving. If this is the case, how would they re-imburse you for gas that you used for company driving? All of the gas is going to one tank; how can you distinguish between gas used for business mileage versus gas used for personal mileage? As stated in previous responses you can deduct a portion of your auto expenses on the tax return. While the you have to claim the re-imbursement for gas as income; you can also deduct the cost of the gas as an auto expense. If 80% of your driving is for business then you get to deduct 80% of the cost of gas. You would effectively only be taxed on the 20% of the gas that you used for personal mileage. I think that is pretty reasonable. By they, don't just pick a percentage out of the air for your business portion. Keep track of your business trips and calculate the correct percentage. That way you do not have to worry about being audited. -
I would second checking and probably replacing the foam. Chunks of foam in my 15 year old Alumacraft would actually sink if I dropped them in water.

Does any one if there is an available launch ramp on the west side of Frenchman's Bay? I know I can launch on the east side of the bay. I wasn't too impressed with the ramp on the east side. I was ice fishing the bay this winter and it looked like Swans Marina on the west side of the bay had a good ramp. But I cannot find any information about launching boats from the west side. Is Whitby harbour the next available launch east of Frenchman's Bay? I would appreciate any information that you can provide.

Well if you are I am missing it too. I am not going to wait in line to save few cents per litre on a fifty litre fillup. If someone was handing out free toonies but you had wait in line for half an hour to get one how many people would do it? But when it comes to saving two dollars on gas.... I plan to fish more this year than last year, mind you I only got out a couple of times last year so that shouldn't be hard.

photo of the missing $350 life vests
John Bacon replied to kickingfrog's topic in General Discussion
We don't have absolute proof that the fisherman are the ones who have the vests. I am sure there were other people at the scene who could have picked up a vest; or the vests may at another fire department. It may be worth giving them a call though. Having to tell someone they don't have the vest may be enough to trigger their concience if it is sitting in their basement. -
I was told to lie as straight as possible and float feet first down stream. That way if you hit a rock you will hit it with you feet instead of your head. Keeping your body straight reduces the chances of catching your tail bone on a rock.

If I am ever reincarnated as a fish I want to be....
John Bacon replied to coreyhkh's topic in General Discussion
I haven't tried it myself but I understand that alcohol applied to the gills will quickly kill a fish. I suggest rubbing alcohol rather than wasting some good stuff. -
Correct, but from wat I understand float tubes are not allowed in the harbour. I am not sure about the personal pontoon boats.

That is true if they get wet. If they are kept cool and dry then you have more time. When MEA collects eggs they are fertilized several hours later at the hatchery. We only harvest loose eggs from "ripe" females. I doubt that immature eggs would work. I don't have actual data to back that up; but my expectation is that are simply not ready to be fertilized.

Especially when it is a fibreglass boat.

I think the fuel filter is the most likely culprit. But I have heard of a similar problem caused by a leaky float in the carburator.

Yes, the Bombardier family is not the Bombardier corporation. The Bombardier corporation does not hold any ownership interest in BRP. Historically the Bombardier family owned a large portion of Bombardier corporation; however, that is no longer true. They gave up there shares in Bombardier corporation in exchange for their share of BRP. Thus, Bombardier corporation and BRP are now two unrelated entities.
-
You're mixing two companies up. BRP and Bombardier are completely separate companies. Bombardier sold off the outdoor product line about 10 years ago and they do not have any ownership interest in BRP.

the same as the price of admission to the Sportsman after 5:00pm

Tentsile... Has anyone seen or used these?
John Bacon replied to Gerritt's topic in General Discussion
Probably more unpleaseant for the guy in the first sentance than the one in the second sentance... just saying. -
I have seen a lot of similar markings in my neighbourhood that so far have not led to anything being torn up.
-
Do you have any data to back that up? They claim to paid for their new building near Peterborough with lottery proceeds. I used to buy a lot of tickets. I usually buy one each year now when I am the Sportsman Show. I have never won anything but I keep hoping.

The MNR does stock some walleye; but they have not been very successful at raising them. There were a couple of private stockers, one for profit and one not for profit that were more successful than the MNR. I am not sure if they are both still in operation.
