  1. Poured rain up here in "Caygeon" country then it turned to snow early this morning...it is back to rain now so the snow is disappearing fast...Phew ! Just the thought of breaking out the snow blower...(*shudder*) Spoke too soon...now it is flurrying...DANG ! Luckily we still have our snow tires on...

Terrific report Raf... Great to see JP... Haven't seen him since a bunch of us got together outside Hooter's in Barrie... Cheers!!!...Guys
  4. I had to take a run down to P'Boro this afternoon...went down via Bobcaygeon and up via Chemong Road to Bridgenorth and Buckhorn... Pigeon is still frozen over at the north end but open mid lake to the bottom... Chemong, upper and lower Buckhorns and Gannon's Narrows all appeared open from the roads... Stopped down at our park and got out to take a look...our lagoon where we dock our boats is still half filled with ice and Tait's Bay is loosening up along the shoreline so another week should see it all gone...this is real early...I hope the crappies are not all finished and gone by opening up here 25th April (3 weeks) :dunno:

  7. Hey Meely...Do you mean back when Yonge Street was still a forest and J.C. was just a yearling ???... Sheesh...a guy has a birthday and all of a sudden he's ancient !!!
  8. Let's talk dollars Lew... 152 liters @$0.80 per liter = $121.60 $121.60 divided by 33 Cdn gallons = $3.68 per gallon Cripes ...whatever happened to that gas station out on Kingston Road near West Hill that used to sell gas for $0.29 a gallon ??? Back in the early '50s
  9. I believe the locals already get a couple of stickers to put on their windshield for free parking during the summer...
  10. When I worked for a living...(CBC)...The company paid for short-term disability insurance and everyone had long-term insurance deductions from their pay so in effect we paid for those on long-term but the insurance company monitored them... If there was no hope of ever returning to work, the CPP would pay disability until age 65 when the pension plan and Old Age Security would kick in...OAS must be applied for... Not too sure how long Worker's Compensation lasts...Haven't heard of too many good reports of them...
  11. Let's see...I was born in 1936 so I'm guessing this was in 1946 or thereabouts...Every summer I was sent down to the family farm near Port Perry...After a good rain , I picked a whole bunch of dew worms so my grandad had me sew two "bobs" (25 worms sewn together lengthwise with a long needle then tied into a ball)...That evening was the first time I ever caught catfish without a hook...as soon as you felt a bite you lifted your 4 foot line on a six foot bamboo pole and swung the fish into the old wooden boat and into a large washtub sitting on the floor between us...as soon as the fish touched anything it would open it's mouth and drop off...We left the fish in a "live box" near shore and would retrieve as many as we needed for a meal anytime we wanted... I have many memories of fishing or just being with my grandad back in those days...Too bad I didn't own a camera...
  12. If he hasn't a truck to your liking...he can sell you one of his standerbreds... BTW Jer...did you find Costco in P'Boro ?...South of Lansdown on the Parkway...
  13. Thanks for all the swell wishes guys and gals... Yep...I sure do like CAKE !...Mmmmmmm Dang though...If I'd have known I was going to live this long...I would have taken better care of myself !!!...(but it was fun while it lasted)...

  16. Way back in the early fifties, I used to fish the Otanabee in the late evening/nighttime for smallmouths with surface plugs...we threw them in the freezer and gutted them the next day or so while they were still frozen, chopped the heads off, and once thawed we would then fillet them...the guts stayed in one frozen clump so there was no contamination...must of been ok as we ain't died yet...
  17. Methinks you were on the other side of the river...the other side of the bridge...

  23. Here's another idea I saw on a carp board...kinda nifty... I understand the owner keeps his ground bait in this pail so that keeps the alarm stick steady...
