I have NEVER seen as many gizzard shad frozen in the ice as we saw yesterday. Laker John and I fished from 0845 to 1700, walking across Hay Bay from the Shermans Launch all the way to the big weedbed on the southshore by the farm with the silo. Many of you will remember that area. We drilled 15 holes in our meandering walk across the ice, SHAD everywhere frozen in the ice.... No wonder the walleyes aren't biting in Hay Bay, the food supply must be staggering large under the ice. The ice was 9-10 inches all across Hay Bay. Stay Tuned David aka Superdad

Several campers from Bayview Resort gathered Friday night for some ice fishing on Saturday and Superdad tagged along Saturday morning. The plan was to fish over in Long Reach close to the Huff Road access. We met on the ice and began drilling holes in the thin ice - at first I had 6-7 inches and then we headed north, looking for different depths, as we moved towards the deeper water the ice thinned out considerably. I was fishing ove perhaps 3-4 inches and thought of moving towards the middle and some deeper water, as I slide out approx 50 feet from my hole, I noticed a patch of black ice and thought it was unusual???? I shoved my auger over and touched it, IT WAS OPEN WATER..... Best stay away from there. We had fished over a couple hours and Miss Helen yelled from the fish hut that she had a fish on!!!! "I don't think its a walleye, she says"and promptly lands a really nice whitefish (Bigger than they caught on Simcoe on Fish N Canada as seen earlier that day). I ran and grabbed the camera and quickly took a shot of Syracuse Johnny holding the fish prior to its release. We continued fishing and at 1130, my rod dipped and i was able to give the heartening sound of "Fish ON", by the time JOhnny got to my hole, the walleye was on the ice. My first fish of 20101!!!!!! It was a nice fish for the table tipping the scales at 3.25lbs. I packed it in at 1515 and headed for home. COMMENTS on THE ICE: The ice was scary, walking out the black ice had large chunks of ice frozen in it. It made the walk unnerving.... The proximity of open water was another item to beware of. The currrent was present most of the day and I'm sure it's the reason for the poor quality of the ice. The ice report from the Shermans Pt Red marker was better than up Long Reach - Guess we might give Hay Bay a try on Monday. Stay Tuned David aka Superdad

With the anticipated Wind Chill factor, it was decided that we (Laker John & Myself) won't battle the winds and the cold trying to fish on Dec 29th. A fine day, however, to have a look around at some of the places on North Channel, Adolphus Reach, Thompsons Pt, Old Church, Shermans Pt and Huff's Road. I know that there are some anglers who still long for the soft(yet very cold) water and we saw lots of open water with access to it. Finkles Ramp is ok, will take some salt and a bit of shovelling, but the ramp is in great shape. It's about 5 kms to the Generating Station and probably another 2-4 kms to Batcave and Lighthouse. As you get closer to the Ferry, the amount of open ice narrows considerably until to you get to the Ferry, and here's what you see. Looking westward this shot doesn't show the whitecaps and the waves that were blowing this morning from the NW. Travelling back to Hay Bay, we had a look around for the access area near Thompsons and we found it. There was a vehicle with a trailer and out on the ice we could see the ATV. There was another ice shack north of this ATV. Continuing around Hay Bay, we came to the Old Church Launch Ramp and it's access to South Shore Hay Bay is ideal. There wasn't anyone off the shouth shore this morning, guess it was TOO windy...... We drove to Hay Bay North to drop off stuff at my place and headed for the Shermans Launch ramp. No problem accessing the ice here, it's all frozen, unlike yesterday when it was very soft just off the pad. Our final stop was Huff's Road, two vehicles down there, one ice shack directly off the access ramp and a couple of 'Clams' just slightly norht of the access point. It was still blowing a ton and we were glad that we had decided not to brave the winds. As we drove around the Shore Road, past QP's place, we could open water from below the Highway 49 Bridge to past Forresters Island. Wouldn't want to chance any of that area. Saw some pressure openings in the ice. I would be cautious in the Mohawk Bay area for a while yet. That's an opinion that was formed driving on the roadand not near the ice. Hopefully the ice will reform as strong as it was before the rain and even with the temps hovering around the zero C mark, there will be lots of places to play. Remember - Play Safe and be Smart. Cheers David aka Superdad

Lew With lots of sunlight, get an LCD TV not a plasma(Not good in sunlight) At Wal-Mart, they've got a chart to judge the size req'd for the ditance to the screen, or you can googgle that and get a formula to figure out the proper distance. David aka Superdad

Big Swede's Year in Fishing - 2009 (pic heavy!)
superdad replied to Big Swede's topic in General Discussion
Big Swede, What a great series of shots and the story to match, really enjoyed your efforts. Perhaps, we can meet on Quinte next year, try and come down for the opener, lots of fun and NOT nearly as cold -LOL David aka Superdad -
Hi there, Laker and I were able to arrange our hectic schedules to free up a day for possibly the last soft water fishing for 2009. Launching at Shermans went very well, the ramp was clear, cept a small patch of ice where the water had been lapping against the cement. There was snow on the road to the ramp from the parking area, the Explorer handled it - no problem! Away we go - and I forgot the planer boards at the trailer, back to the ramp and ten minutes later we were off and heading to Picton Bay. Passed a boat who said they had boated a big one. Water temp in Picton Bay was at 35 degs F. Saw a solo angler net a fish and continued to troll into the Bay with about seven other boats. We were getting antsy with no action and we had decided that one last run thru and we would head off. Trolling past some boats who called to me, we all discussed that was happening, when our plane board fired and Laker had the rod. A couple of minutes and into the net slide a nice walleye. Nine and half Pounds. Fish caught on Manns Stretch plus 20 - Blueberry Muffin Well, we had to make a couple more passes and when they didn't produce, we headed back to Thompsons as we hoped to be able to get up Long Reach , but were blocked by a Reach full of very thin ice..... The water temp at the mouth of Hay Bay was 33 degs F. We set the boards and began to troll, dodging the thin ice floes, the current was moving the ice mainly the west shore and it opened up some areas to troll. Here's what the trolling was like. It was a great day to fish in December, NO WIND - How the winds change - eh Steve!!!!!! We keep trolling and heading for the launch ramp maintained marking a large number of fish on the Lowrance. (That's what those TV fishers all say!!) Almost ready to call it a day, the board wiggled a little and there was a fish on!! I took the rod and really thought we had a nice fish for the table as the pull wasn't that strong. Laker slipped the net under the fish and it was a lot bigger than I thought. Nine and three quarter pounds. Fish was caught on Rapala Taildancer TDD11- Purple Descent One thing we did was to solve some of the mystery about slow trolling and the depths to which the lures would dive to. The Precision Trolling book is predicated on 1.5 MPH, but what is you're trolling at 1.0 MPH???? That's the great thing about fishing, you are always learning something. We had a super day, with some success - Not Skunked is a good thing. Back to the ramp at 1630 and headed home. Unless there is a MAJOR change in the weather, this will be the last soft water post. I'm not one to eagerly await the hard water, when it comes - it comes, if it were remain soft til Mid January - no problem. Stay Tuned

One Last Cast - Dec 6/09 - BOQ Report - Pictures Fixed
superdad posted a topic in General Discussion
Laker John and I were invited to join QuintePrince for a day of fall fishing, we met and hooked his boat up and headed for Shermans launch. Got the gear into the boat and headed up Long Reach to where we had seen some fish the other day. The west wind made the trolling and boat control difficult as it was constantly pushing us off our trolling line. Three boards and a pair of sea anchors had us at the right speed. We trolled for almost an hour before the outside board went off - Love those words - " Fish On " QP took the rod and fought the fish very carefully. I took a photo of the fight, backlight by the sun. Laker John manned the net and scooped the fish and the ice was broken, we wouldn't be skunked on the day..... IT was a nice fish that tipped the scales at an even 10 lbs. We continued the trolling and eventually worked our way into the lee of the west shore to get a break from the wind. As we made a turn to head back downwind the QP noticed the board dragging. He passed the rod to me and we were into another fish. The netting process almost broke down as I was unable to get the fishs head and body high enough to slip the net under it. QP did a great job and the fish was ours. This one was a smaller fish, 8 lbs but nonetheless truly appreciated. We trolled back and forth and couldn't entice any more takers, so we headed back down the Reach to QP had seen some fish on Saturday. We set the rods and the boards out and ran with the wind as it was blowing from the SW. We followed the deep water into the mouth of Hay Bay and eventually found a trolling line in 27' of water. The sun was setting and we knew we had head for the ramp. Laker John said " One Last Cast " indicating that the end of the day was near. We laughed about the last cast and sure enough one of the boards swept back. Magic words - Fish ON!!!! Laker John took the rod and I got the net ready, then QP yelled Fish ON - A DOUBLE Header..................... QP passed me the rod and he took the net to get Laker John's fish. Swish and the fish was in the net. A quick scramble to get the fish out and unhook the hooks and sweep the one on my rod into the waiting net. Both fished landed and both prime fish for the table. Laker Johns' was a solid 4 lbs and mine was a fat 3 lber. The adrenalin was pumping thru our veins and the cold experienced moments before was gone. We set the rods again as we had five minutes for one more cast!!!! Our thoughts were that we would very happy at our results, when the rod was pulled back and FIsh ON..... QP handled the rod and Laker John applied the net and we had another one in the 'extra time' for fishing. QP's fish was a fat under 25 inch 7 pounder - this fish has been feeding!!!! Back to the ramp, boat out, gear stowed and thanks to Chris from the Dew Drop; Inn a moment for a photo. It was another good day of fall fishing, the count finalized at 5 fish landed, a couple of other strikes that didn't hook up - all in all a great day. The company in the boat all enjoyed themselves and we shared stories and fishing experiences. A big THANK YOU to QuintePrince for his hospitality and for the day fishing. Laker John and I wish him the best in his fishing endeavours. The water was at 39 degs F, so it's dropped four degs in the last few days. We used several lures, but the success came on a Manns Stretch plus 20 -Bueberry Muffin, a Firetiger Power Dive and a Silver/Blue Reef Runner. With the soft water, there is plenty more fishing to be done. Stay Tuned Cheers -
That's an excellant report. What a thrill to fish with the In-Fisherman people. We've been watching them for twenty years and hang on every tip and suggestion. Your report continues to show that Stange's use of the swimbaits does work, even in the fall conditions. We have thinking about trying them for the last two years, perhaps we'll invest at the Sportsman Show in TO in March. Good Job and thanks for sharing

The Weather Network said it was going to a nice day with partly cloudy skies and a temp of 9 degs C, Laker John and I headed west from Kingston on the 401 and the FULL moon was still shining at 0700. That bodes well for a good day of fishing, we said - full moons are the best days. Launching the boat at Shermans and heading toward Thompsons we began to troll toward the west side. We had planned to head east of the ferry, but the south-southwest winds kept us from heading out there. We had reviewed the posted results of the weekend and the best results were posted by Quinte Prince & Desi. We made our way to another area of Long Reach. The wind was blowing straight up the Reach and we decided that to troll slow enough, (this being dictated by the 43 degs F water temp) we would troll up wind. This was good enough to get our speed down to 1 MPH right where we wanted. The main challange was to choose a lure that I thought would work, scanning the boxes and the various colours, I chose a lure that I had never caught a fish on, the Manns Stretch plus 20 in the Blueberry Muffin colourd was the lure of choice. We began the trolling at approx 0950 and hardly ten minutes passed for the first strike. VOILA- a beautiful walleye landed - scales produced and they tipped at 11.75 lbs. The rear hook of the lure had been altered in the spring changing to a Mustad Tripe Grip Treble - what a job it did. There was little point in continuing with an unproductive lure on one line and the second rod was quickly changed to the same Blueberry Muffin. The second rod hadn't been out for 15 minutes and off it went. Laker John found the fish and it slipped into the net. Man O Man, the days a success as the scales tipped at 11.15 lbs The trolling pass continued and at 11 o'clock the board went off again, I reeled in another nice 10.0 lber was weighted and released. We have found the Mother Lode of walleyes - we had three fish in an hour all double digits - lots of smiles and laughing and handshakes. At the end of the trolling pass, we started down-wind and found that the speed was too great, over the side went the trolling bag and as easy as pie the speed dropped back to 1 MPH. We trolled back and forth and after what seemed to be a long time, the planer board showed signs of a fish. Laker John brought this one to the net and the scales showed 10.75. Another Double Digit - HOLY COW!!!!!!!! We hardly had time to eat a sandwich and have a sip of soup. The planer board reacted again at 1310 and I brought a much smaller fish to the net, this one was a mere 8 lbs. We were both pleased at our results after four hours of fishing, but still there was plenty of time left in the day to continue fishing. We had a bit of time until the board went off again and Laker John reeled in another nice walleye at 1445. Another Double Digit - 10.5 lbs. \ We had landed six really nice fish and said we would make one more pass before we headed back to Shermans. At 1510, the trolling reel screamed and I was tied into another fish, not real big, but another nice one. The scales shiowed that this one was 7.0 lbs. We continued the final trolling pass with hopes that another fish would make the total count of eight. Sure enought the board went back and Laker John grabbed the rod and the fish shook its head and the hooks pulled out - Darn!!!!! Oh well that's fishing. We had several hookups like that previously and they too shook free from the lure. The daily count ended at 7 for 12, Three strikes that didn't hook up and a couple that shook free. We headed back to Shermans and pulled the boat and cleared the gear and were on the road back to Kingston by 1630. Lakers John and I had our BEST DAY trolling together ever, we surpassed our record day of Nov 13,2003. I cannot say enough about the ability to slow the boat down and using Precision Trolling got those lures right in front of those fish. At the end of the road home, we both agreed it was a day for our scrapbooks and photo albums. Pplease excuse the lengthy diatribe, but these days only occur once in a full moon. Cheers David aka Superdad

NF How to tape WFN on VCR now that I have satelite
superdad replied to Fishn Technishn's topic in General Discussion
It depends on the box from Bell, if your box from Bell will permit timer recording, then you set the timer box to record on the channel you want and set your VCR(the audio/video signal is passing thru the VCR) to ch 3 and set it to record at the same time as the Bell box. If your Bell box doesn't have timer recording capability, then you're euchered....... You can record a program that you are watching. Hope that helps. David aka Superdad PS JUst wired my PVR to the TV and now have to spend some time and figure out the - how get the signal to my DVD recorder - It's in th procedure book. -
You might be able to find a used toaster oven at the Sally Ann or Value Village too, instead of using the good one in the kitchen.

BayBoy asked me along on Monday for some jigging at Thompsons and we began fishing at 0955 and he had the first fish at 0957....... The wind was pretty strong from the SE and Thompsons Pt created a lee that was easier to fish, once you were out the lee, the winds blew you right along, the two drift socks kept us a decent drift. With the higher speed, we went to heavier jigging lure, today the lure of choice was the 1.0-1.25 oz Rapala jigging lure or a knockoff of it. Later in the afternoon, when the winds died, I was able to drop my size to a smaller version and still managed to land fish. We jigged til 1500 and trolled back to the launch ramp, this part of the days fishing yielded nothing. The day of jigging brought us a total of 26 eyes, one of which was 17", the rest were small........ I think that our next trip will be to the deeper water and do some trolling for larger fish. Thanks to BayBoy for the ride and the days fishing, always a lot of laughs. Stay Tuned David aka Superdad.

According to some the trolling bite has slowed and the jig bite is hot, we are able to get a few for the table. We will be trying the trolling again probably next week. Cheers David aka Superdad

Had a chance to get out with BayBoy and Laker John for another shot at the jig bite. Launched at Shermans and we had the lures in the water at 0945 and the first fish at 0947. It seemed as though they were still biting although not as strenuous as Monday past. BayBoy had some lures that he wanted to try out and was very succesful with his Lil Foxies and Rapala jigging lures. The rain held off until 1300 and when it came the bite just stopped, I was talking to Grant from G2 and they encountered the same thing, the bite shut down. They were also having trouble find some larger fish. After an hour and a half of nothing, cept a pike bite that chomped the lure off my line, we began anew in 50' of water and I hooked a fish on my second jig, looks like the bite was back on after Bayboy and Laker John both reeled in fish. These bites were during a teeming downpour and by the way those really neat survial suits aren't waterproof!!!!!!!!! We called it a day at 1615 and headed to the ramp. The total catch for the day was slightly less than our total on last Monday. All in all a very succesful day on Quinte. We calculated that we have caught more walleyes in the last two day of jigging than we did all spring, summer and early fall. Lots of year classes, fishing should be good for some years. Cheers to all David aka Superdad

Having to take advantage of the limited number of days with good weather, it was a day to hit the water and try our luck with some jigging We have watched over the years the number of anglers who jig for the fish around Thompsons Point and I had only tried it last year with Dan Elliot in late Nov. There are some who relish the jig bite and eagerly await the arrival of the fish to the area. I won't mention names but you know who you are!!!! Laker John and I decided that we would try the jigging for a couple of hours to try it out and then we would troll the rest of the day. we began the fishing at 0740 and fish were attracted right away. In the first 45 minutes we had landed a dozen walleyes, granted they were all very small but eager to take our jigs. We continued fishing and around 1000, I had to relay our news to BayBoy,we had landed a total of 20 fish by then and as I spoke on the phone, I hooked and lost what felt like a nice fish. Needless to say, we stuck with the jigging and followed the first rule of fishing -"Don't leave fish to find fish!" we hardly had time to eat a sandwich as the fish kept taking our jigs. Around 1300 hrs, we decided to take a break from jigging and trolled from Thompsons, past the yellow marker and over to the west shore trying different lures, the trolling gods weren't smiling on us for that hour, so we returned to jigging and landed abothe half dozen in the final hour. We packed it in around 1515 and headed to the launch ramp. We could see Hodgey and his boat jigging the day, West Lake Willow's boat trolling the area. I guess there were others who were out that but we couldn't recognize , everyone has a survial suit and we often don't recognize boats. It was the greatest day we have ever had fishing the Bay of Quinte, the total of walleyes landed was 44 and as mentioned not very many of the were in the range of keepers. The size of the fish bodes well as we figured to have seen at least three year classes of fish in our day on the water. I want to thank BayBoy for taking the picture as we stopped to tyalk about our jigging adventure. The day has confirmed our belief that jigging does produce fish and we'll be back to try it again. Cheers David aka Superdad

This article was in our local paper this week and I thought it might be a good idea to post it, so that there is a method of disposing of old flares. "The OPP and Transport Canada have partnered to allow Ontario boaters to safely dispose of expired recreationjal marine flares. For one week only, August 1 to 8, 2009, expired recreational marine flares can be dropped off at any of the 165 OPP detachments across the province. At the end of the week, the OPP will turn the expired flares in to Transport Canada's Office of Boating Safety for safe transport to a certified disposal site. Marine flares should be set off in an emergency situation and shouold be replaced after their expiry date. Due to environmental concerns and the dangers of explosion, expired recreational marine flares should not be disposed of in the landfill." This for your information David aka Superdad

The walleye bute is quite slow right now and a great many fishers are catching 12-14" eyes using the traditional summer method(Spinner and worm rig) The larger walleye are hiding and I think they're right in the weeds(which are really thick and up to the surface) It makes fishing them difficult and requires a GREAT deal of patience. You can troll the weed lines on either side of The Reach, I would add a wire leader incase Mr Pike shows up. Lotsa Luck

I guess that leaves the FLW - Walleye magazine and The Next Bite as sources for walleye info. That's what happens when a big fish takes over a small fish - after a while it disappears also. Sorry to see Walleye In-Sider go, have a LOT of back issues, inlcuding many in the original newspaper format, May have to hang to them a llittle while longer. Cheers
