1. I have tried these....THE WHITEFISH LOVED 'EM! I might be going to a lake that holds perch tomorrow...will try 'em out and report back if i do.
2. Thats an epic adventure! i cant wait to get my snowmachine back and get out into the wilds! I've had a few trips like yours too....not as far into the boonies....but being dissappointed with the fish count, when everything seemed set for a slaughter. Guess you'll just have to hammer 'em next time.....look forward to your next report....lakers are my fav!
3. I think it varies from lake to lake, for example i heard that on one lake i have fished the whitefish will follow the smelt when they spawn and feed off the eggs, and sure enough.....when the smelt started to spawn in late april the whitefish in one spot we fished successfully all march and April dissappeared. the only thing that stopped us chasing the whitefish chasing the smelt was that they smelt apparently head for the mouths of the creeks in that lake....no way we were going anywhere near creek ice in late April.
4. LOL...i never tried Ghost Lake...heard its ok.
5. I know, some days it really gets depressing, having to spend all that time deciding which lake, when all i want to do is get out there and fish!!!!!
6. Excellent video! Love the little caption boxes....specially the last one....lol. Great stuff....that pike eally did nearly spool ya! thanks for sharing.
7. Excellent stuff Biggli, talk about determined to get out, i'm the same......if nobody wants to join me...i dont care....I'M STILL GOING! Not bad for 3 hrs, i've done worse I really hope you guys get some ice soon down there, the weather for you guys has been terrible from what i'm reading, hearing and watching on the news. PS....Happy New Year! Simon
8. Oh i was happy Spiel, just cant wait to get into some lakes with th big guys.......but like you said, i was more than happy with those results, for lakers it was pretty 'non-stop' action, in fact i can say with the exception of an afternoon on Snake Bay last January with my buddy Dave it was one of my better days out in terms of fish per minute....lol.....FPM.
9. Backroad mapbooks are great. I uhave used them often and they are pretty accurate. The only issue i have with that series is they hardly ever mention whitefish!!!!! I am going to the MNR to ask about which lakes hold what fish.
10. Thats really cool, thats exactly the little beasties that the walleye here have been coughing up. I think thats why they have been attacking the split shot on my line and not the minnow. Might have to get me some of those maggots as a backup/go to bait. Thanks for sharing.
11. They are all natural as far as i know. Its only a small lake but really, really deep. Ive marked 150FOW on open water in the summer, apparently it gets deeper. Never got one over 25" though.
12. Hi Y'all, Have been eagerly awaiting Laker opening day for what seems like forever! Got out to a small local lake with a young lad i kinda mentor. Usually not my first choice for lakers, but with the lad along could not really take off to more adventurous venues. Anyway, we caught fish, the young lad caught his first laker and had an absolute blast., that really made my day. We got our limit, and burped and returned a very small one, best one was 23", but thats a giant for Thunder Lake in my experience. We fished a drop off in 50ft of water, most fish hitting at around 20-25', just above a cloud of baitfish that was there all day suspende between 40 and 20ft. You can see the smelt on the fisrt video clip at 40ft, this was pretty thin shaol, as when we got there they were suspended from 30 - 20 ft, a thick school ten feet deep, at first i thought it was the thermocline. I'm not even sure its smelt...but i included a pic of some of the baitfish i removed when cleaning the trout this evening...would appreciate someone telling me what they are. Anyway, had a blast today, only managed 2 hours out, but that made it feel action packed...great for the kid....lol....and me. Here's the vids and pics from today. THIS LAKER JUST COULDN"T MAKE UP ITS MIND! SMELT? 18. Flippin' heck! Nce haul considering the fish were being insolent...lol...you take such a refreshing view of life Glen... Nice to see the bassasassaasses(plural) cme out to play. And that is a neat trick with the dual cones. Top stuff man...why oh why has it been so long since ya went out? Thanks for sharing. Simon. (volcanic ash.....lol)
19. Hi Y'all, Seems at least 2 of us in the family like ice fishing. I THINK BERT COULD USE THUMBS!
20. THATS WHAT ITS ABOUT RIGHT THERE!!!!! Awesome stuff Sinker....i'm only gonna be jealous of you for 2 more days hopefully! Cant wait for Laker opener...then i'll hit an awesome laker and whitefish lake i know. Thanks for posting. Simon
21. So sorry to hear that news Tom, my sympathies to you and yours.
22. HOLY CRAPPOLLA!...i feel like such a dinosaur....how do you guys know all this stuff???!!!!
23. Nice one guys (the 3 amigos....lol) By the looks of it a busy day! Like Whitespinner bait said in a reply tomy post earlier, lots of perch to keep ya active and warm....but the walleye Great pics guys thanks for sharing. Simon
24. Hey leechman, those shacks are just the locals. There is a new town that appears every year out there, last year there were 24 shacks along the 1km ice road. I love the ice road, saves me 25kms on a round trip to town, not to mention the time and gas savings...all for $40 per season! I might get round to hunting one day, but the fishing is too good and i never find time off from fishing to do my gun courses....lol. I've got deer in the freezer from a buddy, saving it for my parents when they come over in March, they really appreciate it! Hey Johnny, you read my mind...again...lol. Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking to find a pattern that resembled a nymph/shrimp type thing too. The walleye i got the other day at Burr Lake coughed up a couple of brown nymph/larvae things too, those Burr Lake fish were also checking out the split shot too. Finding a good imitation lure, apart from using brown/copper jigs would be useful for June as well when the Mayfly/fishfly hatch reaches plague proportions and literally shuts down the fishing with the glut of food. Clamp-it Glad i could almost take ya there
25. Hi Y'all, Went out on Wabigoon today. Its the lake that we live next to and so far this year the fishing has been terrible. I decided to stay local despite the slow fishing because somebody has kindly ploughed a path off the main ice road right the way to Larson Bay near our house....and beyond....don’t know how far the ploughed road goes.....but I went a couple of miles. SOME KIND SOUL HAS PLOWED OFF THE MAIN ICE ROAD THIUS YEAR!!!!!EXCELLENT! <param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"> I got set up, luckily I decided to bring my flip up shack, cuz I forgot my jacket, but I was outside until 3:30 cuz it was such a beautiful day. I set up 2 lines......and waited.....and waited....and waited. Wow.....this was slow even for Wabigoon! I set about clearing a patch of ice for the flip up.....and waited some more. Still no bites....and nothing showing on the fish finder either. So I decided to do a little video of the Lowrance X67C in flasher mode to demonstrate that it does not lag as some people have been saying it does.....killed some time anyway....lol X67C IN FLASHER MODE.....NO LAG THIS CLIP IS MINUS THE FISH BUT SHOWS THE SCREEN CLEARER I could not believe the luck of capturing a fish on the flasher as I was trying to demonstrate it working....pretty cool I thought, considering I’d not had a bite or even seen a fish in almost 2 hours!!!! was my luck about to change?...lol....NOPE! Well it did get a bit better as the sun dropped which is normal and I got one average size one and 2 little guys. I was seeing a lot of fish on the graph now, but they would inspect the bait and not bite. I did a lot of lure/jig/bait/presentation swapping to get 'em to bite without much success, everything I sent down got the once over and that’s it. Interestingly, when I switched to a plain hook with a split shot 1' above the hook (minnow as bait) it was incredible the amount of fish would rocket towards the split shot, totally bypassing the minnow....really weird. I tried jigs that were plain lead, shiny silver etc...etc...trying to mimic the split shot...without success....really weird....lol. THE BIGGEST ONE OF THE SESSION Well not many fish today but fun as usual to be out. Really nice sunset to end the day, and even better another fish supper, I was overjoyed to find 2 sirloins in the freezer when looking to supplement the poor quantity of fish I’d brought home....BONUS....SURF AND TURF!!!!! GREAT SUNSET TONIGHT SURF AND TURF (ok...not much surf on Wabigoon...but ya know what I mean....lol)
