  1. Kool - good on ya for getting the young ones involved. I read a neat caption on an other board - "kids that hunt & fish don't mug little old ladies" How true!
  2. Thanx for the heads up Bernie. I've been watching the weather forecasts for 2 days. Here in Niagara - lottsa rain, mild temps but no freezing rain yet. Fridge is full, lottsa bottled water, 2 propane heaters, BBQ, candles & firewood are ready!! Coleman stove & lantern are close by as well.
  3. For really cold days -25 I like my sorels with the felt liner. They are a little heavy, clunky but toasty warm. Milder days -12 & augering holes with splashing water I like my Nat's. They're all rubber, extremely light weight & grip the snow & ice better than any boot I know of. Like a winter tire!
  4. Thanx for your replies. Sounds like a gas genny is the way to go. I like Honda generators, used them at work - they're bullett proof & quiet! Any comments on which gen to purchase?
  5. I just received the same letter wanting me to provide proof that I paid the tax on my boat purchase which I bought 1 year ago. I in fact did pay the tax - now they want documentation. Obviously Service Ontario & the ministry of finance don't communicate.
  6. Very good topic. I did an inventory of "survival equipment" after reading your posts. I have listed them below - items ready to be put into action if necessary. 1 - airtight wood stove in the basement along with 4 cords of dry wood 2 - coleman cook stove & coleman lantern - fuel for both 3 - natural gas BBQ for cooking 4 - candles, waterproof matches, approximately 7 flashlights 5 - 600 watt motomaster eliminator power inverter 6 - Mr. Heater Buddy & several 1lb propane bottles 7 - Propane heater that attaches to a 20 lb propane bottle - (just filled the bottle yesterday!) 8 - 2 deep cycle batteries, 2 different inverters. Do you guys know what size of inverter I need to power my sump pump? 9 - brand new zippo lighter 10 - 2 brand new zippo hand warmers (the metal type u fill with lighter fluid). I just purchased them for the upcoming hard water season. 11 - 2012 Polaris atv, filled with gas - ready for an emergency run to the beer store!!
  7. Raf I have a sump & deep cycle batteries. What type of inverter do I need to power my sump in an emergency? Thanx
  8. I changed the oil in my ATV, greased all the fittings, & fabricated a bracket to hold the spare tire for my trailer. Woohoo! Today I'm going Christmas shopping! Not nearly as exciting as the crane operator.
  9. Thanx for keeping us informed. It does look promising for Jan.1. Woo Hoo!
  10. Polyester against your skin, absorbs 0 moisture. Then an outer layer of wool, polyester blend to absorb perspiration. I work outside, fish & hunt. This method works. Cotton is rotten. As stated above cotton absorbs perspiration - you don't want that against your skin. NAW Good on ya for buying good ole Stanfields. Made right here in Canada!! EH!
  11. Dem is hawgs! Hey Dave the sliders for my trailer are awesome. Thanx
  12. I wore a Buoy o Buoy for many years. Found it bulky & very uncomfortable. I purchased a 2 piece HJC snowmobile floater suit. Yes it's not a survival suit but very warm & comfortable. Also like the 2 piece when I'm in a warm hut it's a nice feature to remove the jacket.
  13. I hear ya Cliff! These pop ups are a pain! Sorry to hijack your thread but perhaps the person(s) that offer you an explanation could reply to my problem. I'm like you - need some help to get rid of this one called AVG. They want me to buy their protection & I don't have a clue?? DOUBLE HELP!
  14. Yup runner kit for sure, also want the cover & tow bar Thanx for the heads up on Gagnons in Oshawa. It's a 2 hour drive for me - probably go on another "field trip" on Monday.
  15. Thanx for your replies. I went on a "field trip" today to NOT find any Otters at all at 4 different locations including Sail in Burlington. Thanx for mentioning Peter's tackle, I'll call tomorrow. Yes I do have an ATV to haul it. Thanx to OFC, I am now better informed.
  16. I'm looking to purchase an Otter ice hut. I am leaning toward the Otter Lodge. It's 30 square feet of fishing space, has dual layer 1200 denier material with insulation. Looks like a top notch hut. Anybody own one who could share their views on this particular hut? I've searched the net without much luck. Where can I purchase one? I live near St. Catharines. Thanx for your input wormdunker
  17. Ok now it's lesser confoozing? No, I don't want to clean up oil spills.
  18. I was at Kearl for only 10 days. It's huge - 6,000 people at the camp. I spent most of my time at Athabasca though. 2400 at Athabasca. I'll be returning after the new year.
  19. Yah he might be a fisherman but needs help with his grammar! LOL! - would that be grammar or phonics?? Chad I'm coming to Nip this winter for sure.
  20. Thanx for the warm welcome & comments. Yes Mike it is damn cold out there. Recently it was -30 with a windchill of -37. I flew home Wednesday evening it was -22 with a windchill of -30 BRRR! Fortunately I am a crane operator in a heated cab. Only 2 or 3" of snow. Most of the heavy snowfall is south of us in Edmonton & Calgary. Rod Caster I didn't get a chance to fish at all, working too many hours. We work 20 days sraight (10 hours per day) then off for 8 days. I know 1 guy who was catching walleye back in September in the Athabasca River at highway 63. Only a 10 minute walk from our camp. Lac La Biche (spelling?) is quite a fishery which is south of Fort Mac. Misfish Yes to me it was very good (financially), due to the hours worked & overtime available. For a younger person it is definitely a good opportunity. I know labourers who are making 100k a year. Carpenters earn $38.00 per hour & with OT are earning 125K per year. Crane operators it's even better. Some guys don't do as well depending which contractor you're working for. A buddy of mine only lasted 5 days but there was different circumstances. He is a red seal carpenter from Ontario earning 38 bux per hour, but the company wanted him to jack hammer concrete. I wouldn't bust concrete either with his credentials. Fortunately I'm working for a very good company out of Calgary - Pacer Corp. They provide all flights, meals at the camp are awesome, & the accomodations are adequate. Clean comfortable & extra activities such as pool tables, ping pong. Hell the 1 camp even has an ice rink & driving range. If I were out of work in Ontario I would definitely investigate Fort McMurray. The other province that is booming right now is Saskatchewan. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me, I have lottsa spare time to answer your questions. Now, bring on the hardwater!!
  21. Welcome bass_man. Definitely alot of good people here. Lottsa tips & tricks. "Playpen" & "Zoo" describes this forumn very well!!
  22. Hey guys/girls. I've been out of the loop as I've been working in Fort McMurray for the past 1 1/2 years. The last camp I was at didn't have an internet connection so I was unable to keep up with the OFC news. Good to hear every one is healthy & happy. I'm off till after the New Year so I'll have more time to follow the board. Today I plan to get my ice fishing gear checked over for the upcoming season.
  23. Awesome! Thanx for sharing your photos. Dem is hawgs!
