You could be right there Glen. Just after I brought the boat home, fishindevil came over to help me change the lower unit oil and one of the rings had pretty much disintegrated. We changed both of them for a grand total of about 1 dollar.

Hey Wolfville...there are certain areas where they seem to hang out this year that are different from last year. (at least at night). We'd love some company out there...just let us know when you're likely to head out and we'll hook up.

Haha Victor...I dont need to worry about that as much...I still hold the rod in my hands so I can keep my index finger on the taut line. It's amazing how much activity you can feel this way....it gets you ready for the fish. You can feel when a carp bumps into your line, when it sucks up your hair rig, but blows it back out, when they are feeding all around and picking at your feeder and even when their big tails move the water. I prefer it this way....so no bite alarms and bank sticks/pods for me.

You should go and give it a try sometime. You don't need all the fancy carp equipment to catch these guys. I don't use bite alarms, bank sticks or pods. I don't even chum the area that I catch these fish at either. They are pretty powerful fish and a lot of fun to fight on the line!

Great report...even better pics! A nice mix of browns and steelies you got there...some real nice colours on some. Sorry to hear about the company you guys ran into up there, but you still managed to have a great day on the river as far as I'm concerned. Congrats!

Good to hear from you again Mo! I'd be pretty ticked about that Super Lube fiasco! Hopefully you get the boat in ship shape soon so you can get it out on the water. We've only managed one outing this year....timing/weather hasn't been on our side as of yet either. Good luck with it all!

Well, today marked our family opener for zone 17. We were not able to leave to begin our fishing until after 2:00pm, so we decided on trying for some fish from shore, instead of launching the boat up in the Kawarthas. The little pond we fish at is stocked with panfish every year. I was hoping that a bunch of them had survived the extended winter we had. Anyhow, we were armed with fishing rods for everyone, worms and snacks...the recipe for a nice family fishing day. The only thing that could be better was if we got into a few fish. I took the little one around to different spots to see if we could get into some nice little fishies, and it wasn't long before she caught her first fish of the year. She has a new rod this year....graduated from the barbie rod to a little 5 footer. She cast her line out and as soon as it hit the water, a fish took hold of it. I know these are out of season, so a very quick picture and it goes back in. She was very proud of her catch...her first bass! She caught a few more...little sunfish like these guys here... Our oldest finally landed her first fish of the year!! Bly was employing her best new tactics to pulling out monsters from puddles. Here's a pic of her perfecting her presentation.... Finally...not to be outdone, she lands this monster. Ounce for ounce, this fish tested her skill to the maximum level. Here's a pic of our oldest...practising her casting... My youngest and I decided to go for a little walk. There's a little trib nearby and she declared that she was the leader, so off we went. She wanted to touch the water and I took this pic.... Phew!! My commute was going to be awful....I remember the last time this happened, my normal 1 hour drive to the suburbs was easily 1.5 to 2 hours. Thanks for the link Cliff!

Mike...this was a great report! Getting out in the new ride had to feel awesome. Despite the slow fishing, I'm sure you were grinning ear to ear as you piloted your Lund around out there....LOL. You'll get plenty of slime in her Mike....the memories have only just begun in this new chapter....and I have a feeling your son will be in many of those stories....stories he'll be telling his own kids one day.

Way to go MJL!!! Fantastic report and some great pics. Too bad about the camera...I think you are right...time to get a new camera! Congrats on christening the rod...must have felt pretty awesome to land a fish with it. Bly and I decided we'd skip the opener this year...we may head out in the next week or two for some drop backs, but our trout season is pretty much done until the fall. Looks like you and your dad another successful opener. Congrats on the Dean's list....you certainly know where priorities lie....and you'll be justly rewarded in the future! Always enjoy your reports...we'll have to get out for some carp soon...they are starting to finally come in in some limited numbers. Give it another week or two and they'll be think in there.

I started fishing for carp last year. After the Steelhead run was over and nothing else was open yet except panfish, I was itching to target another species. Also, since no one else on my tourny team was going to target them, I figured I'd give them a try. I started out using roe, corn or worms on a single hook, but hookups were very few and far between. Long story short, I was able to meet up with some of this board's premier carpers and I learned a TON from them. Hair rigs, ground bait and boilies became my arsenal to catch these big fish. I saw a fellow OFNer's (Gawel) post in the classifieds for an Okuma Baitrunner reel and decided to buy it from him. It's a very solid reel...and I was hoping to have some luck with it. Last night, Bly and I headed to one of our spots and between the two of us, only one fish was caught....but man....it was a big one. My new personal best! It came in at 36 1/4 inches and weighed 27 pounds 3 ounces. Here's a pic of it.... I was sitting in my chair...not really sensing any action on the line. I hold the line with my index finger...I'm not comfortable with those fancy pods and bite alarms, as I like to feel every little line bump and action. Anyhow, the line slowly starts to peel out....I wait about 5 seconds....and as soon as the line starts to go out a little faster, I disengage the baitrunning feature and set the hook. Suddenly, this carp goes on run after run....for a good 5 minutes I made absolutely NO ground on it. Finally, I'm able to turn this fish around and I slowly get it to move towards me. It takes off on a few healthy runs again, but finally I got it in. I suppose my next goal is to get a 30 pounder...

Fishing in the dark? Who catches fish then?? LOL. We have a light on the side of one of our benches in the tinny that is wired to the battery and is switch operated. It doesn't seem that bright....but when it's truly dark out, it's plenty bright enough to see what you are doing out there.

Get good rain gear to keep yourself dry. I've had luck in the rain....the fish don't care, they are already wet.... As rain/storms approach, it seems to turn the fish on at times. Seriously though...a good rain coat and rain pants will make the time out there more bearable. If you are uncomfortable, you'll tend to not do the finesse things that you'd normally do in good weather. Hope this helped.

LOL Glen....great report! Glad to hear the repairs were done properly. Ahhh...the wall is back in your pics...something just wasn't quite right in your shore reports. We're hoping to take the boat out this weekend with our little one (not looking great at this point), and have her use those sabiki rigs you gave us at Quinte. Saturday is looking bad...rain/thundershowers and winds up to 50km/h....and Sunday morning plans may put a damper on fishing. At the least we'll take her to a local pond. Do they warn you when the dams are going to open? Is there a strict schedule they follow? Thanks for the pics and report....nice to see you out there again....hope the temps cool down there soon...so you can put yer shirt back on.....
