  1. Yeah I have put the sutton on my bucket list now..
  2. The 5 fish limit is ridiculous...another change that should be made.
  3. Not sure the size of the salmon but 6lbs leader seems too light to me especially when the water is not crystal clear, my advice attempt to get away with the strongest leader you can. 8 or even 10lbs. The faster you can land the fish the better for the fish if you plan to release.
  4. On a side note. I was vising my mom yesterday and strolled down to her local creek and to my pleasant surprise I saw a wonderful amount of salmon running up stream. And no one else was around So this large group of fish was basically in the clear and should get a good opportunity to spawn since most of the riverbank they were heading into is more difficult to access.
  5. I personally don't use roe anymore, have been finding it more challenging to catch fish on the fly. I would support a roe ban or some other proposed ideas like C&R only periods in the fall. The problem is even if new rules are enacted we need more resources for enforcement.
  6. So true Craig, its a shame really. As for rods definitely go longer, I have used everything from 7-11 feet and anything around 9 feet and longer seems to make a difference. As for reel, I use a stradic 4000 which provides more than enough backing the only downside is the weight. I also use powerpro, I have found it to be better for abrasion resistance and you can pack more of it on your reel.
  7. Awesome report, I will have to trade some notes with you before I head up that way in October. Had no plans to go to Thunder Bay but there was a seat sale so the whole family is heading up there and while my wife visits her sister, my brother inlaw and I plan to fish.
  8. Send Tdunn a PM. He was very helpful to me when I went up to the Soo this summer.
  9. Good see all these UofG grads/students like fishing. Should have mentioned I am former grad myself and still live and work in the city.
  10. Hey, Welcome to Guelph, I am sure you will enjoy your time at the UofG. As for fishing in town. Both the Speed and Eramosa hold fish, you can try around the downtown area off of Gordon st. Don't expect any monsters but you can catch smallmouth and pike. If you have a car then there is lots of fishing to be had with a little bit of driving.
  11. Can't say I shutdown ever. I don't ice fish much but even in January and February I will get some of that in. Of course if the rivers are still open like last winter then its 12 months a year. Also since having kids I have learned to fish when I can, not necessarily when its ideal.
  12. Wow hard to believe that is right here in Ontario. Somebody mentioned Hambone in Algonquin but this Lake X is on a whole other level. No wonder it is on your bucket list!
  13. I got drawn to spend my money on Monday and was allowed to purchase up to 4 tickets. Here's the thing the thing though I bought 2 tickets for a friend and then another friend got back to me later in the day and also wanted 2 tickets, which I thought I could do but I didn't read the fine print. You are only allowed to make one transaction on the day so after I bought the first 2 tickets I was no longer eligible. Also you are required to buy one of the other games as well. So all in all for 2 tickets it was $400 bucks. Thankfully for me I am not spending that money but my friend is, I was fortunate enough to get some corporate seats for the game. Also since there is a good chance it will not happen, no need to worry you will get a full refund if the game is cancelled for any reason including weather.
  14. My guess is you have to troll the deeper waters. I think the fishing has slowed considerably over the years with most of the bass being on smallish side now.
  15. I might just try this recipe tonight!
  16. I am shimano guy and have the stradic in the 2500 and 4000 series. Similar to most I basically use the 2500 series for most fishing and the 4000 is really more of a specialist vs. a generalist reel if I can use the phrase. Right now I have my 2500 series spooled with 6 and 8lbs mono. The 4000 series is spooled with 10lbs mono and 20lbs powerpro which is almost exclusively used for salmon off the piers. I have been spooled on the 2500 series but never on the 4000 series. I also find that once the diameter of the line is over 8lbs test mono that I like the bigger reel, just my personal preference.
  17. Totally agree, its about ownership and less about the breed. I have a beautiful pure bred German Shepherd and would not want to see her succumb to the same legislation as the poor pitbull because some owners are idiots.
  18. Yes I agree, not worth it. It can be a fun lake, granted most fish are the smallish side there are some decent fish to be had. My advice is to try one evening if its not too far a drive and fish topwater, it will keep you busy for a few hrs.
  19. Wow, what a catch!
  20. I assume you mean the one in Acton? It has bass, pike, crappie, carp and panfish in it.
  21. great report. Didn't even realize the petawawa had musky!
  22. hey I am also heading up there for a week in July. Going to be there starting on the 21st for a week. Plan to hit the rapids with my switch rod if I can get all my stuff together. From what I read the rapids are extremely slick and you need a wading staff and studded boots. I was thinking of pming Tdunn and have already looked into some fly guides but not sure of my schedule yet so I haven't booked anybody. I am going with the wife and kids to visit family mainly.
  23. Great report, thanks
  24. Bill I just looked at your flickr page. Some really beautiful looking fish.
