  1. Really interesting thread.
  2. I would have been lost if you had changed your avatar
  3. Wow another amazing report. This has been a good week. I seriously want to start saving my coin now for a trip next year or the year after to this place.
  4. I have a wedding this weekend, tis the season. But my wife told me last night we don't need to leave until around 4pm. So I'll take what I can get and see if I can get any local bass to take a fly around town.
  5. Having a 2 1/2 year old girl and now 2 month it is certainly tough to watch toddlers. They are fearless and very inquisitive a brutal combination. I am sure the family of this poor girl feels bad enough without being charged. We don't know all the circumstances but if there are multiple kids especially toddlers its easy to get distracted, I think we would all like to think this would not happen on our watch but never say never. Its hard not to judge as my first thought was where were the parents but taking time to reflect on it I just feel sadness for this family whenever a child dies its a tragedy. As for all you guys that say you give your kids constant supervision I just don't believe it. We all have had instances where it is not possible. And I consider myself a damn good parent.
  6. Thanks again Mike your a master angler and photographer!
  7. I just put RIO Gold trout weight forward on my 5wt this year and really like the way it loads on my rod. That said my previous flyline came with my first fly fishing combo and was pretty cheap so I am not surprised. They say you often get what you pay for with fly lines. Your list appears to be all reputable so it will likely come down to preference.
  8. WOW......
  9. Wow great pics...no idea on the Laker what a beauty.
  10. You will be fine as others have said. You can even add some shot to get it down deeper. Also you can simply swing the fly as sometimes fish do not seem to want it striped in. Make a cast quartering down stream, and mend if necessary to slow the fly down and just the let current take it. This will cause the fly to swing until the line is directly below you downstream. Before recasting it let it sit there for a couple pauses often fish take it at this time. google wet fly swing for a video or a better explanation.
  11. I think from reading the article this was a staff decision and never went to council
  12. Don't know if you don't try. I landed a few nice fish yesterday but it was a tough day in the sun, although water temperatures are still good. I probably wouldn't have picked yesterday but for my brother inlaws birthday we got him a learn to fly fish day and I joined him. Although alot of review for me, I still learned a tonne from our guide and managed some fish. My poor brother inlaw did well in picking up the sport but never landed a fish. But he learned lots and seems motivated to try again.
  13. I haven't taken a course in about 10 years and definitely should again. Thankfully nothing major over the years other than some cuts and what not. I always carry a well stocked first aid kit on trips as well as a pocket first aid book. Sometimes you only have 1 first aid trained person in the group you never know who will go down, at least with a book someone not trained can take a quick peak to at least get things stabilized (well hopefully).
  14. Thats awesome, seems to be a lot of guys trying it out lately. A couple years ago I tried it and just loved it and pretty much thats most of the fishing I do now. Going to try and hook my brother inlaw this weekend, booked a learn to fly fish day with a local guide for his birthday, it will be mostly review for me but nothing wrong with that and hopefully he will catch the bug.
  15. Another year and another great report. Thanks for the great read as usual.
  16. You would get better value booking a charter for half day with 4 friends. I realize this says 3 people for 1 hr and $49 bucks but I have to think you will be disappointed with only an hour on the water.
  17. reelflies.ca they have been great to me so far. I am not sure I will ever get into tying flies myself.
  18. look for the portgage sign close to the dam and launch there. good luck.
  19. My german shepherd has never been bothered by loud noises like fireworks or thunderstorms. It doesn't faze her at all, yet my inlaws dog is very frightened by loud noises. Seems like every dog is different, there must be someway to train them to get used to it. I would imagine someone with a hunting dog would know on here.
  20. Good luck. If only I could join you but I would surely have to find a new job though when I got back
  21. I have not had to use a nail knot all my flylines have a welded loop. So I just use loop to loop connection. I have heard that for large fish ie steelhead, salmon, saltwater etc that some welded loops have failed so a nail knot is better. My guess is Drifter_016 (Dave) would know better on this since he lives way up north and from some of his reports chases some very big fish. Also on the last flyline I purchased it also had a loop at the end to attach to backing so I basically did an albright knot to the backing since I already a welded loop. Again this is only for small trout so I will likely never even get into the backing so i am sure it will hold up fine.
  22. Swinging a fly for trout or tossing spinners for trout. Love doing both probably more than anything else.
  23. Bring some of those waterproof cases for maps etc. I always like to have 2 copies of maps with me and store them in different locations just in case. I am always kind of anal about trip planning so if you have a larger group its not a bad idea to create a trip planning document that outlines the route, checklists, costs, meal plan... On the topic of food, make sure you have some nice jerky and GORP. Change of clothes at the car, lip balm (honestly my lips get just blistered after a couple days in the bush). I have also started to bring baby wipes for cleaning things and myself. they pack easy and can be burned or packed out. Also check the weather diligently before you leave. I have been up there in May and had 20 degree weather and also had 0 degree weather.
  24. Hey Miro, I was out Sunday, I didn't see much rising so I never touched the dries. I am surprised you got nothing on nymphs or emerges. I found most fish hit at the end of the swing. Next time try the classic wet fly swing, its dead simple and it works. If you were fishing nymphs, often times when you are not getting any takes its likely one of two problems. The first is that the fly is not getting down to the bottom, you should be ticking bottom every few casts. You may just need more. The second can be drag so the fly does not appear to be drifting naturally under the water. If you are using an indicator a good measure is to make sure your indicator is drifting at the same rate as the bubbles on the water. Bill I like the idea of thermometer and a very good point for our cold water fish.
  25. Your casting looks pretty good for a new fly fisherman. Hell I don't think mine is any better and I have been doing it for a couple of seasons. What were you using? I had success on the credit this past weekend swinging small BWO wet flies.
