  1. Yes, fresh and trimmed. The pieces are bacon length and about 1.5 to 2.0 inches thick. Quite meaty too. Now that I think about it, maybe it was not 5 lbs. Maybe 4 or so. Didn't pay that much attention, but it was a nice big package of maybe 7 or 8 pieces.
  2. Talking about heart attack on a plate, was in Costco Saturday AM and they had pork belly. About 25 bucks for 5 lbs or so of nice meaty pork belly. So my wife made slow braised pork belly with rice and veg. Sort of Chinese style with star anise, soy marinade and honey. The pieces get roasted for a bit to crisp the outside and take off some of the fat and then braised/basted in liquid for an hour or so. Wow. Not as greasy as you might think, but definitely "rich" with fat. I probably shouldn't eat for a few days this week.
  3. I am not a country music fan, but Roy was a hugely talented guitar and banjo player. In those days they all looked at Chet Atkins as inspiration for country music with good guitar riffs. Roy was one of the greats.
  4. Daiwa BG is a fantastic saltwater reel. Read the online reviews. I have a 2500 and its really nice. Great drag and smooth. I would think one of the big ones would be strong enough for big pike or musky. They use them for casting big plugs and baits in saltwater. But using a spinning reel with braid casting all day is hard on the fingers compared to a bait caster. With gloves it might be easier.
  5. Best way to cook turnip is to cube to one inch cubes, toss with a bit of olive oil, salt and pepper, put on a flat cookie sheet on parchment paper and roast in the oven at 375 till browned and tender.
  6. And the 2007 financial crisis stock market issues also started in late fall 2007 in October. Then it went down over the next year and plunged in October 2008.
  7. I put Hankook Optima’s on the Ford Fiesta we bought for our kids to use. they were much better than the all seasons, but when my son worked for a year in Kitchener we bought a set of true winter tires and they were even that much better than the All Weather. So they are a compromise. I think cost wise having a separate winter tire set will make your summer tires last longer which saves money, so the extra cost is just the winter rims and the cost to swap them out each year if you cant or wont do it yourself.
  8. Pretty simple recipe. Fried the mushrooms with two chopped onions in 50/50 olive oil and butter. Not much. Just till the water was mostly cooked off. They have a lot of water content. Then added a bit of tarragon and some herbs de Provence. Not much. And salt and pepper. THen some heavy cream and milk and slow heated to almost boil. Then thickened a bit with roux. Another way I have done them is equally as good. Same starting point but instead of adding cream to make a soup add rice and cream and water to make a risotto. Then sear some scallops in butter and garlic and put on a bed of the risotto. Plays off the seafood like taste of the lions mane.
  9. Lion's Mane or Bear Tooth mushroom - Made a fantastic soup yesterday. Took a walk up north to look for some honey mushrooms. Didn't find any, but scored on Lion's mane. Got enough to make a massive soup today. Delicious. Didn't take any pics on the logs, and forgot to take some before most was chopped and in the pan. Cream of wild mushroom soup. The best part of the fall season.
  10. That is just for backing down into the ramp. I am sure its just temporary and set up at the ramp. Keeps the back of his head from getting wet when he is launching the boat. Actually Its an interesting idea.
  11. Smoked walleye? There aughta' be a law against that!. The Foodland on 93 in midland smokes its own fish. Over the summer I have tried their trout and salmon and earlier they had smoked sturgeon. It was all pretty good. Made fantastic fish dip with the sturgeon. Simple recipe. flake the fish. Add 50/50 sour cream and mayonnaise to the consistency you want. A bit of salt, a very small amount of chopped chives and the secret ingredient. A bit of grated lemon rind zest. Eat it with pita or baguette slices. Never seem to have any leftovers.
  12. On my boat I have an automatic 40 amp charger (Pronautic 1240). It has an equalizing cycle that auto runs periodically. It cranks up the charge voltage to 15 or 16v for a bit to hit them hard and desulfate the plates. Supposedly they need that periodically to make them last longer. It also has a charge cycle matched to the type of battery where it starts high, then tapers off. Seems to work, but it does mean I need to watch the water/acid levels in the cells over the season. The worst thing you can do for a deep cycle battery is run them way down, and then slowly charge them up with a low capacity charger. They won't last long that way. They need a hard and fast charge for the first stage.
  13. The guys down south think speckled sea trout have nasty teeth. They ain't got nothin' on a crazy canuck wally.
  14. Wonder if sturgeon eat gobies too?
  15. Thats not a good thing for Keji. For those that don't know the park, its like the Algonquin of NS. Its a cooler climate there so the lakes can be shallow, are tea stained and would look like good pike/bass habitat except that they are mostly trout lakes, with nice wild brookies. Chain pickerel will impact those lakes to a degree, although they are full of small perch too so there is alternate forage..
  16. I have found its best when you let the filets dry for a long time before they go in the smoker. Someone said 24 hrs. That works if the fridge is not too moist. It needs a nice glaze on it before you smoke it.
  17. Has anyone tried an Insta pot pressure cooker? My brother in Calgary has been raving about his for a year or so, so we finally broke down and bought one. Its basically a high tech slow cooker/ pressure cooker, but the liner is stainless steel and you can fry/brown at higher heat before you lock down for pressure cooking. True one pot cooking. You can buy the toughest cuts of meat and turn them into slow cooked tender goodness is 30 to 45 minutes. Its really cool. They are pricey but the the go on sale periodically. You will want the larger version.
  18. This works for people and boats may be a way to attach to your dog https://www.amazon.ca/DRAGONFLY-WINGMAN-DEER-HORSE-REPELLENT/dp/B01GVQTT7Q
  19. Talk radio on Friday was all about this, with lots of mention of suicide help lines all through the day. I guess lots of worry that it might tip some people. He was so well respected and seemed to have it all. Very very sad. If you or anyone you care about seems to be depressed, talk about it. What’s the worst that can happen by asking if someone is OK? At worst they will know you care and you are there for them. A life may depend on it.
  20. They really do look like tarpon. I wonder if they are genetically related in any way.
  21. For storing snelled hooks, perch rigs, and walleye spinners, I like to use short pieces of foam pipe insulation. Start with the line end and wrap tightly over itself and finish with sticking the hook back in the foam. Its smaller than pool noodles, cheap, and fits in the larger size tackle box trays. Keeps them from turning into a tangled mess. I use the same for salmon flies, herring holders and hoochies.
  22. If the engine stalls on the water does it float?
  23. Shouldn’t you be at practice, Marchand?
