Very nice surprised at how many off the beaten path Haliburton lakes have been stocked with bows, got a surprise more than once when my folks had a place up there and I packed into what I had hoped would be a spec lake, not complaining though.

As far as the MNR is concerned you can small game hunt in southern Ontario with anything up to a .275 calibre rifle, unless the township has further restrictions , this would be the case. For discussion's sake here is the bylaw for a Niagara township, complete with legal goobledeegook, they limit rifles to .22 centrefires as a concession to coyote hunters, lot of areas here are shotgun only for hunting. http://www.town.forterie.ca/WebSite/tofeweb.nsf/0/39D277EC48E2C7398525725F006A460C/$File/hunting_bylaw.pdf Like Sinker and I said, better research it yourself.

It's not very easy, you have to go to Township/Town Halls and read the actual laws as printed, each town/township can or will be different. Don't go by what a town clerk or the local police say, they often are misinformed, would you ask a police officer about fishing regs?

I'd look at Fifty Point as an alternate to Bronte, beleive the season's pass is $95, cheaper if senior rates apply. If you are fishing any distance offshore it is only a couple of miles further to the same water and weigh in at Grimsby Tackle, might work for an East Hamilton resident. Living in Grimsby that's what I did rather than trailer around the end of the lake if Shell Pier action was hot.

Don't do the wire cable after a season or 2 you'll be carrying a leather palm glove to guide it on to winch level, not user friendly.

very nice those smaller spring cohos are the best on the table out of all the Lake Ontario salmonoides

parents had a place in Haliburton, fished most of the well known laker lakes and some not so well known, the most consistent producer was always a fairly large gang troll with a large minnow/chub off the back on a 2 foot or so leader , rig it with a baiting needle with a treble near it's tail and up thru the body and sew lips shut, a slight bend to the body so it does a slow roll, outfished any other technique. I would take my salmon boat up in June for lakers, doing a temp check of the lakes they set up with a very sharp thermocline, over a degree per foot, fish the fish just below the thermocline rather than the bottom they are most active.

Anyone Own A Bush Lot With A Lot Of Cedars? (NF)
dave524 replied to solopaddler's topic in General Discussion
Solo, there is a lot of concern recently about transporting plant material, the bulk of the concern centres around the Emerald Ash Borer. the main culprit in the transport of this invasive and deadly http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerald_ash_borer species is firewood and hardwood pallettes from diseased stock. There are some bans on bringing your own firewood in Prov. Parks I believe. I would think you can bring some cedars south with a clear conscience, goin north with stock could conceiveably cause some concern. Forestry Grad Class of 74, UofT. -
Doesn't quite work that way, the youth smarten up and get informed and turn into conservatives, seems to be a natural evolution

Eager to get on the water but reluctant to drill a hole in a new boat, I once removed one of the rings on the back that you hook your tie downs to, took a piece of wood, maybe 3/4 " thick and 1 1/2" or so wide, drilled two holes at the top to match the spacing on the ring and then cut it just shy of the bottom of the hull , replaced the ring and mounted the transducer on it . Was a while too before I got up the nerve to put the drill to her

thanks for the Rory, shame he wasn't more popular this side of the Atlantic, he was huge in Europe. Jimi Hendrix, while being interviewed by" Rolling Stone Magazine " was asked " how does it feel to be the world's greatest guitarist ? " to which Hendrix replied " I don't know, you'll have to ask Rory Gallagher " Here's some more Rory , enjoy. <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/33Jaodra7AY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> -
Depends, if I'm going very small like 0 or 1 size I do better with Panther Martins , if going with size 2 or 3 then the Mepp's. Really like the Panthers in the smallest sizes with the orange/black fly for small stream specs.

I'm getting up there too, had to wait till 21 to legally drink in Ontario, I too don't remember the bottle top cans, but do remember metal cans that you had to open with a can opener and especially how pop machines had that door where you set the can and when you closed the door it punctured the can it was probably the most unsanitary idea ever invented.

It will be crazy parking on Monday, that building, the old pumphouse , is the local polling station

Nice fatty Brown, and in my backyard too if an Atlantic it would be OK off the pier if over the size min., but in the creek behind you in the pic there is no open season.
-
Early cans here were actually all light gauge steel including the ends, you had to use a pronged can opener on them and broke down relatively quickly, especially if you burned them in a fire pit. When pull tabs came in, we retained the steel cylinder but the ends were aluminum, lastly we have the extruded aluminum cans of today, probably the least environmentally friendly can if left behind. 40 or so years ago it was acceptable to burn steel cans and bury them along with the remains of your fire pit if you packed them in to a remote camp site, yes times have changed.

This is a good resource for sunfish ID, there has been a few besides Bluegill and Pumkinseed found in the Lake Erie drainage srea. http://www.tnfish.org/FishIdentificationID_TWRA/TWRA_Sunfish_Identification_Key.htm

Towers, yes bought my first Rapala there in the early 60's, as a kid saving up allowance money. My fav store of the 70's was the " Outdoor Stores " think it was bought out about 1980 by Collegiate and they got rid of the hunting stuff and the fishing went downhill. There was one at the QEW and Dixie south side and then one in Hamilton in an old Loblaws on the corner of Parkdale and Queenston. Another source of tackle in the 60's was Cole's Book Stores, at least the one at the Pen Centre in St. Kitts had a very good fishing tackle dept. At the same time Herzog's Mens Wear in St Kitts had a well stocked hunting and fishing dept in the basement.

Same Luxor reel my dad had in the 50's, had it on a tubular steel rod of the same manufacturer. He used that reel probably 20 years. He's 83 now, it's probably in his shop too

Exactly, there is always one round here that thinks my bird feeder is its own private smorgasboard

I always picked them up with hook and line, very small hook and a tiny bit of worm. Look at any small creek in the area that crosses a road, something that looks like marginal trout water is usually the best. Once you find one that has a healthy population of larger chubs and dace type minnows you can put 8 to 10 in a minnow bucket in short order anytime you want, no more as they won't last too long, overcrowding, lack of oxygen.

Big fan of Jackson Browne and Lindley, Lindley's falsetto cracks me up The 2 of them still play together almost 30 years later <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/TTwRq92L4S4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> -
Back in the late 80's when the MNR raised both Cohos and Chinook, what they did was to grab the Chinook eggs first and the Cohos after. What happened was they unintentionally bred for a later running strain of Cohos, the peak of the run would occur in the Credit in early Dec right up until it iced over. It was not uncommon to see a few around at spring thaw albeit in pretty advanced state. This is really late though even for those late spawners.

Even if you could get it, being from the states it might be US Coast Guard approved but not have the approval label for a Canadian pfd, if you had intended on it being classed a a legal life presever you could be out of luck.
-
Pretty obvious, it's a male and only half spent, so only half still in spawning colours put him back so he can complete his job and he will turn all chrome and drop back to the lake
